I provide a clear, concise, proven path to success at playing the harmonica. I focus on the most important aspects at mastering the instrument. We also have fun as well!

About Tim G.

Unlike other teachers that teach multiple instruments and add harmonica to their list, Tim's sole focus and expertise is the harmonica!

Tim began playing harmonica at the age of thirteen. In addition to the guidance and nurturing he received from his musical family, Tim studied with harmonica greats Cary Bell and Jerry Portnoy. He also completed courses in music while earning his bachelor’s degree with honors from Kent State University in Ohio. In addition to harmonica, Tim is a fine singer, songwriter and guitarist. An expert blues player, he is also accomplished in the folk, rock and country genres. Before moving to Nashville in 2015, Tim was regarded as one of the finest harmonica players in New England.

I'm the type of student who tries to fit my practice time in between other aspects of my busy schedule. Tim is the type of teacher that understands that, and caters each session to the advances I've made, and the places where I've fallen behind. With me he always found a way to compliment me on any progress, and tips on where to head next.

Tim's approach is laid back, and yet deep in the knowledge that hes willing to share from decades of honing his craft. Never intimidating; always helpful and completely straight.

A top notch instructor in my book, well worth every minute spent in his studio. And generous to a fault, with knowledge and tools by which to learn!

Tim has been an awesome teacher and my skills are improving dramatically. He also answers the questions about what key, why and where did it come from. A very skilled musician.

Tim's warm and inspirational approach to teaching has led to many insights about my playing. Tim's experienced background as a blues harp player, performance career, and music theory along with his most helpful guide "The Talking Harmonica," recorded audio tracks and YouTube videos combined for an easy and fun learning experience. I wholeheartedly recommend lessons from Tim to any aspiring harp player that has a love for the blues and playing the harp.

Tim did a great job for my first lesson. We reviewed the fundamentals and started working on the major and minor scales.

I've been playing for a while without any instruction and Tim helped me clean up some bad habits in the very first lesson.

Tim's method for teaching harmonica is enjoyable and logical. I can honestly say that my tone, technique and overall facility on the harp have improved so much in just a few weeks of working with him (after a year or so of trying to figure things out on my own via the internet). He knows just how to convey in words -- in a way that you can understand and implement -- exactly what you need to be doing with your mouth, lungs, etc. to help you improve your sound. As such his instruction can provide a great foundation for playing in any genre (blues, pop, country etc.). Also he's super laid back so that's another plus.

I always look forward to my lessons with Tim. He's a great guy and a tremendous instructor. His sense of humor keeps the hour fun and engaging.
That is not to say that he is not constantly challenging you. But he does it in a way all great teachers do; he communicates efficiently and effectively. Hence, it's pretty easy, if you put in the time, to make incredible strides with your harp playing. Highly recommend signing up!

My 5 star rating is not given lightly. I am now retired after almost 40 years teaching in a school for special needs children. Tim does it all right. A great guy with a laid-back, easy way. Tim is very supportive and will ease any anxiety you may have. He understands the process of learning and knows how to teach! Tim makes things fun, he will challenge you at your level. He’ll give you riffs and drills that quickly link to songs, so in no time you’re playing. Tim has all the skills and tricks and will make them accessible to you. He will help you key in on what’s important to keep you moving in your process.

Keep your harp handy, listen to Tim, give it 10 minutes 3x a day, and you’ll be “killing it” in no time. But, it’s all about the process, and Tim makes it fun! Look no further.
My only regret is that I am unable to give Tim 6 stars!

I have been playing harmonica for five years. Tim Gartland is the 3rd teacher I have had. I can say without hesitation that he is innovative and tailors his teaching style to his students learning style. He is “hands on” and you feel he is totally invested in your progress. Tim is a great accomplished artist & a fantastic teacher. My instruction time with Tim is the “highlight “ of my week.

Tim's the real deal. Not only a great player but a great teacher. Also, harmonica is all he teaches, he doesn't do as a secondary pursuit. Through, patient, intelligent, well thought up and focused the core fundamentals to get playing the right way as fast as possible. He wrote a great instructional book too!

If you have ever wanted to play harmonica around the campfire with your family and friends, Tim can help you be successful. If you sing or play an instrument, Tim can help you accent your skills by adding the harp to your music. Take some lessons from Tim and you will be amazed. There are many harmonica instructors on this website, so please consider trying Tim as your instructor. I've taken lessons from Tim for 6 years now. I met him at his harmonica book signing and asked if he would teach me since I do not read music...I know rhythms from playing drums when I was younger. I now have my own blues band and do many side projects with the harp. Some tips for those getting started or those that want to become proficient at the harp: come to each lesson with questions about music, equipment and anything you are curious about; his book and website really can help you understand how to play and what to play in most situations; practice in the cellar 2-3 times a week and you will improve quickly. Good luck with your musical journey!

Tim's an amazing harmonica player and instructor. This is not a very common combination as many of the best practitioners of a given art often don't have a clue how to communicate to others what they do. Tim is one of the exceptions. He has a codified approach of teaching the instrument (including a successful textbook), and helps the students systematically learn all the techniques and theory necessary to enjoy this deceptively simple instrument. Once armed with the fundamental building blocks, Tim's students are invited to explore and expand their musical experience through developing their blues and rock-and-roll solo abilities as well as band/backing skills.

Tim's knowledge of the harp is unsurpassed. His teaching style is organized and he is extremely patient! He is also adept at many genres of music and can tailor instructions to what I wanted to learn. Brilliant musician and super nice guy!
