About Steve G.

Music has been a part of my life for over 4 decades. I stepped onstage when I was 15, and have been active in the music business ever since. I was raised in the New York / New England area, and played in many bands in the 70's and 80's, most notably the band AVALON. I moved to Florida in the late 80's and began to develop a one man show, using the emerging technology available. I called the show YIN YANG, the infinite possibility of Music. I chose the name, as it is the Oriental symbol for balance, and used it to represent the balance between the electric and acoustic, and the technology of today with the classic music from yesterday. Midi guitar and guitar synthesis became my trademarks as I pushed the boundaries of how I could express myself on the guitar. Being able to play sax, flute, strings, pianos, even percussion on the guitar took my imagination to new places and enabled me to express myself in ways I didn't know were possible. I grew up influenced by the classic rock guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Alvin Lee, Duane Allman, and used their techniques to springboard me into developing my style. I am also influenced by some of the great guitarists of today, such as Satriani, Vai, Bonamassa, etc. I am fluent in electric and acoustic guitar, slide guitar, open tunings, modal playing, and guitar synthesis. I also can play and teach mandolin, ukulele, banjo, bass, and also harmonica and folk harp. I am working on the bagpipes now. I also give lessons on music technology, audio recording, and music software such as Sonar, Reason, and Finale, to name a few. Music is the passion that feeds my soul, and a decade ago I started teaching, to have a chance to give back to the next generation and share what I have learned along the way. I love bringing out the soul of each new student I meet.

*** Lesson Details ***
When I take on a new student, the first thing I do is to sit down and talk to them and find out a bit about them... their personality, what their influences in music are, what artists they like, and what they are looking to be able to accomplish on the instrument. Each student is an individual, so depending on what they like, I will frame my lessons around the styles and artists that they like, and will incorporate the fundamentals and the exercises around the music that they enjoy. I will use the artists and the songs that excite my students to frame the lessons that we work on. I use music software to create custom grooves for each of my students to practice to, and also sometimes use a video cam to film my student working on a particular lesson that they are having trouble with, so that when they go home, they have an example of themselves playing the lesson, so they can study it at home to get it right. I am a firm believer in learning all the rules. I am also a firm believer, when you know the rules, to break them all. You have to know the rules to be able to break them. I will provide you with everything you need to shine on your instrument. My teaching technique is something that I developed myself, is quite unique, and, if you follow my program, you will progress REALLY fast. But keep in mind, anything good is worth working for, and if you REALLY want this, you will grow in leaps and bounds. Most of my students have been with me on an average of 4 to 5 years, some 9 or 10 years. I look forward to meeting you and helping you make magic with music! Ciao!

*** Specialties ***
I have developed a curriculum that combines my knowledge of music software with my teaching technique. This enables me to create musical templates tailored for each student according to their musical interests, what they would like to focus on, and what their ultimate goals are. For example ...lead guitar, rhythm guitar, acoustic guitar accompaniment to their voice, etc. which ends up making for an exciting experience as my student learns their instrument framed around the styles of music that they enjoy.

I could not have found a better instructor- worth every penny. I was worried about committing to 5 lessons on this site without meeting the teacher, but after meeting Steve I knew I found the right teacher. He takes the time to explain everything in detail and is patient while you learn. Never at any point did I feel like I made a "mistake" or I was doing something wrong- he gently just tells you where you need to get eventually. Will go as far into detail as you want to go. Very talented player- he just gets "it".

Awesome! Exactly what I was looking for! Steve G. really knows his stuff, and his studio and home are really cool! 30 minutes per lesson is not long enough, so I plan to change my future lessons to 45 mins.

This was my first lesson after playing guitar on and off for 30 years! Steve assessed my playing and immediately homed in on some well established bad habits as well as outlining a plan to fill all the gaps in knowledge I have from never having learned the theory. I can immediately see this is going to be very good for my playing. Very excited, should have done this years ago.

I've taken lessons from about ten different teachers since I was 15 years old some taught me more music and some taught me to play songs on the guitar. but no one ever put it all together like Steve Gagnon. Every lesson Steve teaches me something new and covers music and technique. and teaches me to play my own style. rather then just copying others weather you are young or older Steve will teach you as an individual with patience.

I have always wanted to learn how to play guitar but just never really knew where to begin. My wife surprised me with lessons for fathers day. I am currently approaching one year playing thanks to meeting Steve and taking weekly lessons with him. Steve is a wonderful person and the absolute best person to learn from. He is extremely patient and and passionately inspiring. He really cares about your growth in learning a new instrument and goes beyond the normal preparation to assure you get the most success out of your time and works closely with you on what you personally would like to achieve with your learnings. I would highly recommend Steve for anyone, at any age, that is either looking to extend their craft or those like me who is ready to learn something new and enjoyable in their life.

Steve G: A Superb Instructor

I'm a student of Steve G.'s and am in my 40's. I had previously taken classical piano lessons from the age of 7 until 18, but I wanted to try my hand at guitar. Having come from a long line of teachers in my own family, I am well acquainted with the great (but often under-appreciated) skill it requires to be a quality instructor of any kind. A superb instructor (like Steve G.) should possess the following qualities:

1. Patient: Prodigies or masters of their art often lack the ability to convey their ability on a small scale to their pupils. Steve is an amazing performer and artist, and yet he is humble enough to walk alongside you, particularly when you are establishing the fundamentals of guitar technique. He will find the areas that need work and allow you to see how a small amount of persistence can result in large gains.

2. Encouraging: Steve is always optimistic. You can feel his passion for music in every word he speaks. He has the rare gift of making you see the flashes of your own talent, and he will help you build on those. He will not only help you figure out ways to overcome your obstacles in playing, but he will also deepen your appreciation of the instrument itself. He even went with me to the store to pick out an awesome acoustic guitar!

3. Individualizing: Steve doesn't have a once-size-fits-all method of teaching. He is a very keen and observant instructor who will challenge you based on your progress as well as your natural abilities. He will get to know you as a human being and as a budding artist. He will find ways to allow you to take your own inspirations and use them to drive you forward in your musical exploration.

4. Exemplary: Steve has tremendous integrity, not only as an artist but also as a professional instructor. He is also a tremendous guitarist with a broad repertoire, and watching him play will motivate you to become even better.

I hope this review is helpful to anyone who is considering taking lessons. Sign up with Steve and you won't regret it! Good luck on your journey!

You make lessons fun....

From age 6 until high school I took piano lessons. But guitar was always an unexplored desire. I started taking lessons with Steve a few weeks ago. From the very beginning he has been just so easy and comfortable to work with. He willingly adapts his style of coaching to my specific needs as a student, learner and musician. He's so strong in his fundamentals that I can pick the music and he builds lessons around my choices. Really makes me look forward to my own practicing and even more to my next lesson. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Steve, for bringing music back into my life.

I have been wanting to learn how to play the ukulele for the past two years, but I have been too shy to take lessons because I was scared I would be judged. I finally got the courage to put all my fears aside. I am extremely glad I did, and I was so happy to find Steve as my music teacher. He is very down to earth and never judges. He is very understanding and teaches me at my level. When he sees me getting nervous, he always tells me ," Relax, this is fun.' He makes me feel very comfortable. I'm not scared to ask him questions, or to learn from him. He is always giving me compliments on how I am improving. I believe he is the best music teacher ever, and I wouldn't ask for anyone else!!

Dynamite Teacher

Steve is a very good and extremely patient teacher. As much as I may dislike learning theory, Steve knows how to bring it all together so that it makes a light bulb suddenly switched on in my head. As a blind retired executive, with a passion for good music, I decided to try to emulate Warren Buffet and his passion for the ukulele. Steve has been extremely patient with my difficulty finding the right strings with the right fingers, but nevertheless with a short training period under my belt, we feel I am making great progress. Not only is Steve patient, but he is music smart, interesting, and so accomplished with the equipment. I highly recommend him as a great instructor for another candidate with the desire to play!
