The gift of learning to play music is a skill you can develop and use for the rest of your life as I started when I was 9 years old. The cello has a range and voice that sings like no other instrument. I was classically trained at Indiana University's School of Music. I have a traditional approach by teaching scales, etudes and a standard cello repertoire. Though children may start out on an instrument when they are younger, I expect my students to commit to their instruments as lessons are an expensive investment for their parents. When the child or adult is ready, I encourage him/her to play/audition for an ensemble of her choice to build musicianship. I have been teaching private lessons to children and adults for 17 years and I incorporate music theory as part of the total lesson. I have performed as a solo cellist, as a chamber musician on treble and bass viola da gamba with the Cisraritarian Consort of Viols and as principal cellist in Livingston Symphony Orchestra and People's Symphony of Essex County, NJ. Two genres of music which I have played which are not listed below are early music and tango music.

About Sheryl R.

I have enjoyed performing as a soloist, chamber musician, and principal cellist for the Livingston Symphony Orchestra and People's Symphony of Essex County, NJ. I have also played in numerous pit orchestras for performances of Ragtime, Les Miserables, Cats, A Little Night Music, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Oklahoma, and many more.

Whether you are a child, tween, teen or an adult, it is never too late to embark on learning to play the cello. If you decide to take lessons with me, you will go far if you are dedicated, focused and willing to practice. Each week, I have you learn a new scale, etude and piece which we choose together that fits your technical level. As we progress in a piece, I assign you new movements of the piece until you have completed it. My teaching method combines a balance of positive reinforcement and constructive criticism to help you improve your technique and practicing skills each week. I will help you prepare for auditions for summer music camps and youth/community orchestras when necessary. If you have any questions regarding purchasing/renting an instrument, we can also discuss that.

This is my lifelong passion and I want to nurture people at any age to learn to share the gift of music.

Sheryl was my teacher from early elementary school until high school graduation, and thus witnessed my growth as a cellist from total beginner to advanced intermediate. A phenomenal instructor, she led with a relaxed and patient demeanor that always put me at ease, no matter how prepared I was for my weekly lesson. Yes, she held high expectations for my development, but she was also always willing to help me when I struggled and to demonstrate certain passages or techniques when need be (she's a super talented cellist herself!). Throughout our lessons, she placed a firm emphasis on both technique and artistry, helping me become a well-rounded soloist and orchestra member. I give Sheryl a ton of credit for instilling in me a love of music that has lasted to this day, and would highly recommend her to any aspiring cellist!
