I have had many good teachers in my career as a musician. But I have been lucky to have had a few GREAT teachers. It is easy to settle with "just ok", particularly when taking lessons as a novice. However, the difference between a "good" teacher and a "great" teacher at any point in your journey as a student can hugely impact your success and relationship with the instrument.

As a teacher, I aim to be great for my students. For beginners, we focus on developing a solid base - getting comfortable with the instrument, understanding it, building fundamental skills such as how to hold the bow and basic fret board patterns. From there, we begin learning to read music, which I still find to be the most valuable skill a musician can have. Learning to read music notation is easiest at a young age, so I like to begin as soon as the student is ready. However, as a student of improvisational music, I like to introduce ear-training and improvisation as well. It is a fun way to teach students how

I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. I graduated from Yale school of Music with master degree of cello performance in 2021. I have performed in renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Vienna Konzerthaus, Suntory Hall in Japan, and the National Concert Hall in Taiwan, I also worked with prestigious conductors including Carolyn Kuan from Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Valery Gergiev, Jean-Marie Zeitouni, Takacs Nagy from Verbier music festival, Peter Oundjian from Toronto Symphony, David Robertson, Ignat Solzhenitsyn, Marin Alsop.

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 6 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students since then. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion ...

I am coming to the cello as a brand new beginner. I have play around with some fretted instruments, ukulele, banjo, etc. But Irina was super at getting me relaxed, focused on basics and encouraging me with small, but important mechanics and technical details. I have taken other music lessons like sax, so could compare. I totally enjoyed the start of my cello training.
Oh, btw, I'm retired and over 65!!!

Dwight has been absolutely wonderful to work with, and extremely accommodating. I'm an adult learner with hearing loss and had a couple of other cello instructors politely decline initiating ongoing lessons, but Dwight wasn't even phased! He's been very helpful and encouraging every step of the way, and explains nuances in a tangible way, even over video. I have especially appreciated his patience, as I cannot always hear what is wrong until it's been done right, a correction that seems twice as difficult in the age of social distancing! I have taught myself to play a number of instruments (adeptness aside), but never had as much fun or progressed as quickly, and look forward to continuing on with the cello.

Mr. Anderson has been a great influence on my life. As a cello teacher, Mr. Anderson has a wealth of knowledge ranging from the making of the cello to the history of composers to just random facts. Mr. Anderson has been my teacher from the 6th grade to my senior year. During those 6 years, he helped me grow into a great cello player that as a senior, I was able to play a solo with my school orchestra as a senior capstone. He, also, understood, that during this time, not only is his job to teach me cello but also to help and guide me into a better person. I have had many great and amazing teachers in high school and college and Mr. Anderson is among the best. I will never forget those 6 years and will fondly look back at these formative years.

Dwight Anderson was a fabulous cello teacher for my son from preschool through high school. He was, in fact, the best music teacher we ever had for either of my children - through all of their piano, violin and cello instruction. He was consistent and nurturing, able to push the boundaries of expectation, and able to inspire. Although he only taught my son, he influenced my daughter as well by encouraging them to both participate in the GDYO. He was masterful in choosing certain pieces of work that inspired my son to practice and to perform. Even though he certainly assigned scales and etudes, he always allowed him at least one piece of his choosing that gave him such a sense of accomplishment. For example, my son learned to play the prelude of the Bach suite in G even before he started the 1st grade. That is still his favorite piece! And, starting around 7th or 8th grade, he let his pick which "big work" they would tackle for the following year. We went through the Lalo cello concerto, Faure's Elegie, the Saint-Saens concerto, Popper's Hungarian Rhapsody, Dvorak's Rondo, and finally, "The Dvorak", for his senior project in high school. Even though my son didn't always learn all the movements of the concerto or learn it to perfection, Dwight's partnership with my son in picking these pieces gave him such a love of playing the cello! What a wonder and a gift!
In the years since high school, Dwight has kept up with my son, even though he chose a non-music career path and a life in the north east. We will be forever grateful for Dwight and the influence he has had on my son in particular, and, for his influence on the whole family for deepening our appreciation of beautiful music. Thank you, Dwight!

In a short time Megan took me from a complete beginner to understanding complex concepts covering all aspects of playing the cello. Her basic instruction, as well as insights to guide my understanding of how to hold the bow properly, correct finger position, swinging movements, appropriate weight, etc, took me further than I imagined. Throughout our lessons Megan stay tuned in to my instructional level, while accelerating my understanding of how to move towards excellence. Megan truly exemplifies "beginning with the end in mind." "Excellent, excellent teacher

I've been taking cello lessons from Bijan for about 2 years now, and his instruction has caused me take a greater appreciation for music on the whole. Cello is my first instrument and I was worried that, as an adult player just starting out, I'd have to hunt around for an effective teacher. I was very, very lucky in getting Bijan as my teacher. His credentials are unmatched and his talent across multiple musical styles is amazing. Any question you have, from instrument choice to deep music theory, he has an answer for. He has also been incredibly patient with me, even when I seemed frustrated and ready to give up. I probably would have if it had not been for his encouragement and help. Bijan would absolutely be my first choice for anyone in the San Diego area wanting to learn music."

What is a Yamaha Cello? A Detailed Look for Cello Students

Who made your cello? Who carved the body, stained, varnished, and assembled the instrument, including the label visible through the f-hole which bears their signature? Many musicians consider the maker of their instrument, or luthier, a point of pride. There are famous luthiers, like Stradivari and Guarneri, whose names are synonymous with masterpieces of craftsmanship. These masters innovated many of the standards for modern stringed instruments, and so many luthiers might include on the la …

Is There Such Thing as a Left-Handed Cello? How to Play as a Leftie

Handedness is the sense that one hand is more dexterous or coordinated compared to the other. Researchers usually determine an individual’s handedness by observing which hand is used to write or eat. Although the causes of handedness are not fully understood, about 10% of the population is left handed or ambidextrous according to Dr. M.K. Holder, a researcher and specialist on handedness. Many left handed students wonder if they will need a specialized instrument in order to learn to play …

What is the Suzuki Cello Method?

The Suzuki method, founded in 1945 by violinist Shinichi Suzuki as the Talent Education Movement, is one of the most enduring teaching methods, or pedagogies for young string players. Suzuki’s main goal for his music education system was to give students a “noble spirit,” which would instill respect and cooperation through his method. The method was brought to America in the 1960s by John D. Kendall, and today the Suzuki Association of the Americas instructs new teachers and studen …
