If you have an ear for music & the ability to match pitches you hear, you can develop this skill!

I have enjoyed singing since I was a young child. I have participated in theatrical performances, select choirs, choruses, and octets since elementary school up through high school. My high school select choir required utmost dedication offering formal vocal training to develop technique that will not damage your vocal cords or lead to development of nodules. In my training as a professional cellist, I was required to participate in music theory and formal ear training at Indiana University’s school of music. The beauty of this art form is that you do not need to pack it up in a case! It brings happiness as a unique form of expression to you as the participant and to all those who can hear you sing. First, we will establish your vocal range and where your voice switches from your chest into your head. From there, we will learn about proper breathing and vocal technique that will help you enjoy learning. While working on your musical piece, we will learn musicianship by adding dynamics and other musical elements to create your own individual style.

    About Sheryl R.

I have enjoyed performing as a soloist, chamber musician, and principal cellist for the Livingston Symphony Orchestra and People's Symphony of Essex County, NJ. I have also played in numerous pit orchestras for performances of Ragtime, Les Miserables, Cats, A Little Night Music, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Oklahoma, and many more. Whether you are a child, tween, teen or an adult, it is never too late to embark on learning to play the cello. If you decide to take lessons with me, you will go far if you are dedicated, focused and willing to practice. Each week, I have you learn a new scale, etude and piece which we choose together that fits your technical level. As we progress in a piece, I assign you new movements of the piece until you have completed it. My teaching method combines a balance of positive reinforcement and constructive criticism to help you improve your technique and practicing skills each week. I will help you prepare for auditions for summer music camps and youth/community orchestras when necessary. If you have any questions regarding purchasing/renting an instrument, we can also discuss that. This is my lifelong passion and I want to nurture people at any age to learn to share the gift of music.

Sheryl is a patient and knowledgeable cello teacher. I started cello as an older adult, and Sheryl has been very accommodating to my specific needs and wishes. She lets me proceed at my own pace, while still encouraging me to advance my skills with a no pressure attitude.

I have been taking cello lessons with Sheryl for 2 months now and I have been enjoying every minute!! I am a complete beginner at age 25 to the instrument and she has been so informative and excellent in meeting me where I am every week. She creates a nonjudgemental atmosphere in her home and really wants you to feel as comfortable as possible while learning. I feel so excited and passionate about playing the cello- Sheryl's extensive experience and supportive teaching style guides me to progress more and more each week.

Sheryl Reed was my teacher for about ten years. Not only is she a marvelously accomplished musician and an understanding and supportive teacher; she is also great at helping students learn to perform without feeling the jitters we might otherwise feel.
