Cello Lessons from Experienced Performer and Educator

My goal is to equip young musicians with the skills they need to excel on their own terms. For this reason, I emphasize mental practice techniques which enable better understanding of the music and the ability to make informed expressive choices. Using the latest psychological studies in practice methods, I give students a toolbox for efficient and effective practice for any piece. I also teach methods of releasing tension to play more effortlessly and avoid the risk of overuse injuries. From my own experience, I know that students are not always passionate about standard repertoire, so I also strongly encourage exploration of new and non-traditional music. In my career I’ve premiered several chamber works, commissioned multiple solo works, and performed in various genres including popular music, Middle Eastern music, and electronic music. Anything my students want to learn I am excited to teach, and I have a list of resources to enable students to find music they are passionate about.

    About River M.

I'm a cellist, vocalist, and scholar from Austin, Texas, now living in Brooklyn, NY. I hold a B.A. in Music with a Concentration in Musicology-Ethnomusicology and Recognition in Music Performance from the University of Texas at Austin. I've been a member of various ensembles including the University of Texas Symphony Orchestra, the Butler Opera Center, and the Bereket Middle Eastern Ensemble. In addition to my orchestral performances, I also enjoy collaborating in chamber music contexts. My recent concerts include a performance of Bottesini's "Fantasia I Puritani" for violoncello and double bass; SoundProof, a group of premieres of new works for mixed chamber ensembles by young composers; and a solo recital featuring a newly-commissioned work for singing cellist. I've also been teaching for 3 years, and love working with students of all ages and backgrounds! I'm a passionate believer in music education, and am excited for the potential to help you on your learning journey.
