Hi! My name is Phil. Thank you for stopping by! I spent a large chunk of my childhood in São Paulo, Brazil but am originally from Richmond, VA. I've lived in the city since finishing up my undergrad studies in 2004 and have since performed in all kinds of settings (jazz duets through big bands, bluegrass bands, folk-rock, chamber orchestras and full symphony orchestras). I love the rich and vibrant music scene that NYC has to offer and I see every day a chance to learn something new. I have experience teaching beginner guitar and beginner piano lessons in one-on-one music school settings at the Rye Arts Center in Rye, NY, which I left so that I could pursue my masters degree in classical double bass performance. Part of what helped me work so well with my young students is my background as an early childhood music specialist with the Music Together program. As I taught my students at Rye Arts Center how to read music, learn songs, instrumental technique, good ear training and all that goes into achieving solid musicianship, I always made sure lessons contained the right mix of fun, excitement, care and rigor. I’m a supportive, attentive and fun teacher and I look forward to helping you explore music as you learn your instrument!

Phil taught Music Together classes at my center for a few years and was terrific with kids and their parents. He really understands how to make music learning fun and playful for children. Families absolutely loved him! He has the playful qualities and understanding of developmentally appropriate practice needed to teach children well and the seriousness of a professional musician to be a great teacher for adults. I highly recommend him!

Phil is an excellent teacher of upright bass. I had other teachers who were OK but Phil is better by far. He emphasizes fundamentals but keeps the lessons interesting and enjoyable. He is open to hear about what you are doing musically and using some of the lesson time to work on those interests. I have improved a lot since starting with him. He is also pleasant, reliable and easy to deal with.

Phil helped me transition from electric bass to double bass. He has knowledge, resources and a great attitude. A sensitive instructor, the lessons were clear, and inspiring.
