Oscar is a total rockstar of a piano teacher, and I truly cannot recommend him enough to anyone looking to make their life more musical. I’ve been playing piano for years (let’s just say well over a decade); I’ve always loved it, but this is honestly the most fun I’ve ever had with it, and his lessons are the highlight of my week. Before starting with Oscar, my formal training had only been in classical music: there’s a joke I once heard (that I’ve never forgotten because, in my case…definitely was not a joke) which goes, “How do you get a pianist to stop playing?” “You take away their sheet music.” Before any literalists go and try to jam their memory banks with a million scores (pause, please), let me just point out that what the joke is getting at is the raw fear so many of us have when it comes to experimenting with our own musical ideas, just taking some risks and messing around on the keys. So much fear—as if everything you do will cause Beethoven to roll so hard in his grave that he rolls over to Chopin’s, which happens to be empty because Chopin has already rolled away, having heard you too. There are two things that Oscar said at my very first lesson that I now realize I’d been waiting to hear from a piano teacher for my entire musical life. After his ears survived my hackneyed interpretation of a jazz scale exercise I’d found online, he very calmly and gently informed me, “We’re going to stay away from sheet music, and we’re going to work on rhythm.” …Luckily, he hadn’t brought up the fact that I was going to need to sing—something I definitely have not been waiting to hear from anyone ever. But by the time this came up, I already so fully trusted Oscar’s pedagogical wisdom and goodwill that I felt comfortable enough to embrace the challenge. Oscar’s teaching is based in a genuine excitement for sharing both his passion for music and impressive know-how. He has helped me structure and focus my haphazard attempts enormously, making a lot of what seems mystifying, accessible and manageable. I can’t imagine tackling these still-quite-scary challenges without his encouragement and guidance. There are pep talks. There are music recommendations and listening sessions. There are dazzling demos that he whips up on the spot. It’s just an all-around great time. Thank you, Oscar!

Oscar was such a good instructor that I don’t think I’d ever want to be taught piano by anyone else. He gave me personal piano lessons for ~5 years. He was always patient and understanding whenever I struggled with sheet music that was trivial to him, making sure he put himself in my shoes and tried to visualizr how to best provide guidance on the process of mastering the technique. Oscar is an expert at a variety of musical genres ranging from classical music to modern jazz. His range is so wide that once, I even asked him to help me learn a hard rock/metal tune, and despite not being familiar with the genre, he was capable of extrapolating his knowledge into understanding the sheet music and how it was meant to be played to the point where he was better than me at playing this song (even when I’d practice it daily and he was just reading it on the fly!). Oscar was always flexible and understanding of time conflicts, even inviting me to play at his house at some points where my piano was broken and/or unavailable. I liked Oscar as a teacher so much, that I even convinced him of giving me and my family some cooking lessons!
