I welcome students in middle and high school that are eager to learn the art of playing the oboe and making reeds. I make reeds for all of my students by hand, as well as teaching them the basics of the craft! Lessons with me will address scales, fundamental technique, solos, orchestra excerpts, and etudes. I have been playing oboe for 12 years and earned my Bachelor's of Arts degree in Music from the Florida State University College of Music, where I studied with Dr. Eric Ohlsson.

Maria has been playing oboe for 12 years. She received her Bachelor's of Arts degree in Music from the Florida State University, where she studied with Dr. Eric Ohlsson. She currently performs with the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra and Meridian Symphony Orchestra. She taught students privately in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, while working on her Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology. She recently moved to Birmingham, where she teaches students from her home. She loves playing the oboe, and hopes to inspire the same love of music and the oboe in her students!

We are in our second year of private oboe lessons with Maria, and she is an outstanding teacher.  My daughter has improved greatly in her playing, especially in tone and technique.  Maria does a great job in preparing her student for auditions and performances.  She has also helped instruct my daughter in reed repair and even reed making.  Most importantly, Maria makes learning music a true pleasure.

Maria is not only a talented musician, but a friendly, intuitive, and invested teacher. I would highly recommend Maria to any middle or high school oboist in the Birmingham area who is looking for help with auditions, reeds, oboe technique, and musicianship!
