About Kathryn S.
I am a passionate teacher originally from Eastern North Carolina, living in the Raleigh-Durham area. I graduated from East Carolina University in 2016 with a bachelors in Music Education specializing in instrumental music. I taught high school band for 4 years before relocating to the Triangle Area and now teach middle school!
I began on clarinet many moons ago but eventually found myself playing tuba, which was my main instrument in college. I took private lessons throughout high school and then studied with Tom McCaslin while at East Carolina University. I played in the Marching Pirates, Symphonic band, and Wind Ensemble while at ECU. I continued playing in the Low Country Winds while I lived in Beaufort SC, and will continue to play in the Raleigh area once COVID-19 no longer prevents it.
Music is my passion, but even more so is helping students succeed through music education. Although I get to teach music everyday in my professional career I miss being able to have the structure of one on one lessons, which is why I have embarked on the private lessons journey. I am excited to watch my students grow through music and become the best version of themselves!
Together we will find what learning styles and techniques best work for you, and we will grow your abilities as a tuba player and musician. I love teaching students from all walks and will meet you where you are musically, and take you to where you want to be! Music is meant to challenge, engage, and lift us as people, and I will ensure our lessons do just that.
