The ability to communicate and connect with each individual student is, for me, the only way to teach effectively. My approach to teaching applied voice is to lay a stable foundation, specific to each student and voice, while methodically eliminating obstacles and acquired habits which prevent the student from fully realizing their potential. I assess the needs of each student individually and seek to meet them where they are at any given point in their development. Inquiry is a vital aspect of my teaching practice as I seek to ensure that the student understands the concepts being introduced and that they are developing the critical thinking skills necessary to become autonomous in their singing.
I see my role of voice teacher as that of a facilitator, guide, and trouble-shooter. As such my primary teaching objective is to empower the student to internalize, apply, and find relevance in the information I am sharing.
From a technical perspective, my teaching remains firmly rooted in the traditions of Bel Canto shared with me by my father and mother through their teaching. I believe that beautiful and sustainable singing is the result of a process of engagement and discovery of the function of one’s own instrument. The development of legato unencumbered by tension and a vibrato which is flexible and freely spinning are a primary focus in my teaching.

Julian has truly been a God-send for me. A brilliant, musician, technician and teacher. He is intelligent, patient, sensitive…so highly in tune with the voice. To say he knows the instrument well is an understatement.  And, just as important, he knows how to work with you as an individual. He has such a skillful way, as any great teacher should, of explaining what he is trying to convey in a variety of ways to help YOU as the student understand. Not all teachers are able to do that, but Julian can. And he makes sure that you understand so you can be your own technician and master of your instrument. I trust Julian. He has helped me and continues to help me understand and find MY voice.

I highly recommend Julian as a teacher. Before studying with him, my voice had a growth spurt, and none of the “well known” teachers I had studied with knew what to do with it. My voice was in pieces, and Julian was the only teacher that was able to help me. He rebuilt my voice, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Julian was able to find my true voice, and I love that I sound like ME! Everyone in the studio has very distinct and different voices from one another. He’s able to find your true and individual vocal potential; he doesn’t just “bandage” the problem. He truly is the best!

Julian Kwok is a technician's technician. He can take large, unruly instruments and whisper them into efficiently wielded, marketable product. He can develop voices of any type to their full potential, but his specialty is, arguably, large voices. He expects a high level of commitment, so my advice: do the work. Doing the work will maximize your experience. He's keenly sensitive and understanding. If you're serious about a career and developing your voice in a healthy way, this is the guy.

Julian is truly one of the most intuitive and knowledgeable teachers I’ve had the privilege of working with. Not only does he understand building a voice and training it for the rigors of the stage, but his musicianship and artistry is unequivocally powerful, commanding and riveting.

I have studied with several teachers over the years, none have been able to help me fully realize my potential in the way that Julian has. He was able to accurately assess my issues and come up with solutions that are specifically catered to my voice and my personality. I would enthusiastically recommend him as a teacher for anyone interested in classical singing.
