Find ease and confidence in your voice with experienced singer/songwriter and teacher

The voice is a fascinating instrument with underrated healing potential. I’d love to help you explore yours in a judgment-free space. I’m particularly sensitive to students struggling to gain confidence in themselves. My primary goal is to create a safe and playful learning environment where you'll feel free to test the limits of your sound without fear or self-consciousness. Whether you're eager to improve an existing vocal practice, or a complete beginner just longing to sing for fun, I'm the sort of teacher that will spend extra time between our lessons thinking of ways to understand and improve your unique voice. Our lessons will be crafted around your personal goals and may cover a range of topics, including: breathwork and vocal technique, understanding vocal registers, rhythm training, ear training, and more. I also propose creative prompts and feedback for songwriters, and BONUS: if you're interested, you can track your improvement with me by recording a demo at my home studio with the help of my husband, a talented guitarist and producer-in-training.

    About Julia M.

I'm a singer/songwriter from Chicago with strong ties in France. I began my career in 2014 with the French pop band Kid Francescoli, with whom I collaborated on two albums, contributing lyrics and music as well as vocals. Until 2019, I toured with the project internationally, appearing at European festivals such as Dour and For Noise, as well as established French venues like Le Trianon and Moulin Rouge. Songs from both albums have been used in major ad campaigns (ALDI, Lancome, Hyundai) and in TV and film (Emily In Paris, Get Shorty) with one song (link “Moon”) becoming viral on TicToc and reaching more than 62 million streams on YouTube. I feel comfortable in a variety of musical genres, and sing in both English and French. While living in Marseille between 2014 and 2021, I became involved with the local jazz scene. During the same period, I was invited to contribute lyrics and vocals to a number of projects, ranging from experimental music to electro (Thylacine, French79, Wuman, Paravision Music). Most recently in 2021, my lyrics and vocals, as well as an original song, were featured on an album from jazz trumpetist Christophe Leloil, based in Marseille. Songwriting provides me with an outlet for my love of language. I have a BA from NYU in Comparative Literature and a minor in Creative Writing, a practice that carries through into my lyrics. If you're curious to learn my about my music, please contact me. A persistent student of voice with various private instructors since childhood, I began offering classes of my own in 2019, after completing an accredited professional voice training course with French Canadian voice coach Tania Zolty. Tania invited me to join her company Body N Voice in Marseille, France, where I went on to teach for two years. I am also a student of Somatic Voicework, The Lovetri Method, a way of working on all aspects of the voice so that the singer may increase awareness of sound-making as a physical process. Now based in Chicago, I offer private lessons at my home in Humboldt Park to students of all levels, ages 8 and above, individually or in small groups.

Julia is a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher. As an adult beginner singer, I've really appreciated her approach, her patience, and her ability to explain concepts in different ways until I understand them.

Julia is very easy to work with and focuses on preparing you for the music you want to sing rather than a textbook approach.
