Trombone with Jonathan H.

Jonathan is a freelance trombonist and educator located in Chicago. He has performed with the Chicago Symphony, Lyric Opera of Chicago, North Carolina Symphony, Omaha Symphony, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the award-winning contemporary ensemble Dal Niente, as well as many others. He currently holds the position of Principal Trombone with the Northbrook Symphony. Jonathan has won the International Trombone Association Alto Trombone Solo competition, as well as the Larry Wiehe Tenor Trombone Solo Competition. He was also a finalist in the Eastern Trombone Workshop Solo Competition. Jonathan completed a Bachelor of Music degree in Trombone Performance at Indiana University, where he studied with Peter Ellefson and M Dee Stewart. He then went on to complete a Master of Music degree in Trombone Performance at DePaul University, where he studied with Mark Fisher and Charles Vernon. An enthusiastic teacher, Jonathan has taught both beginning and advanced students. He served as the trombone instructor at Luzerne Music Camp, where he taught private lessons and coached various chamber groups. Teaching concepts include but are not limited to the following: a beautiful sound, channeling personal expression and emotion through one’s instrument, efficient production, being a storyteller of sound, efficient and relaxed breathing, learning how to become your own teacher, and most importantly to have fun making music!
