    About Jonathan G.

Jonathan received his training at Houston Baptist University in 2016 where he received a degree in Music Education. Jonathan has taught lessons through public school districts, Guitar Center Lessons (where he served as instructor and later as Department Manager) and as an independent private teacher. Jonathan is also a professional musician, performing shows around the city every week. Thanks to his expert training, Jonathan is able to customize and adjust every lesson to suit each student's individual needs and learning traits in order to optimize enjoyment and success. In lessons, all facets of music can be addressed, including music theory, tempo and rhythm, improvisation and soloing, grooves, ear training and any other techniques needing to be developed. Study into specific genres is also an option, including jazz, funk, soul, R&B, reggae, latin, rock, pop, metal, etc. Another major focus in lessons is helping each student develop their own "voice" in their playing. This is the most rewarding part of being a musician, as learning how to develop your playing to channel your own mental, physical and emotional feelings and ideas leads to great self discovery, self confidence and awareness. It is also a great stress reliever and can be very therapeutic! Lessons with Jonathan are highly engaging and educational, but they are also fun! Jonathan creates a lesson plan unique to each student's needs and skills to ensure maximum results and progression inside of a comfortable and fun atmosphere! All the educational material means nothing if you aren't finding the enjoyment and fun in the lesson to actually practice and learn the material outside of it! Jonathan approaches lessons with a professional and laid-back demeanor looking to keep a smile and interest on the student's face from the beginning of the lesson to the end! Experience

    Bassist

    Jan, 2017 - Present

    If You Have To Ask

If You Have To Ask is a 7 piece band that plays mostly funk, latin, pop, hip hop and jazz originals, with some covers mixed in. With every member being highly talented on their instrument, we are able to add improvisational inspiration on every performance. This gives our shows a very organic, engaging and energetic feel! We have performed all across Houston as well as shows in Austin. Some venues we have performed for are: House of Blues, Antone's, Karbach Brewery, Axelrad, Rockefeller's, Warehouse Live, and many more! We currently have 3 songs on all major music streaming platforms featuring Jonathan Galvan on bass.

    Lessons Manager

As manager over Guitar Center Lessons, I helped instructors develop the best lessons possible for their students. I also helped each student find the best instructor for their needs. Under my tenure, I also coordinated a very successful and large student recital, which featured over 20 different student performances! Bassist for Hire

    Aug, 2007 - Present

    Freelance

As a musician, I have studied music in all genres and styles. This has allowed me to contract myself as a bass player for bands needing someone to substitute for a show. I have performed with numerous different bands, covering many different styles of music such as: blues, latin, rock, funk, soul, jazz, classical, rap, hip hop, and pop. I have played all types of shows as well, including weddings/private events, bar/restaurants, festivals and concert venues. Several gigs have required me to learn a large amount of songs (some as much as 40-50!) in only a matter of a few days and perform with musicians I have never met before. I also have served as a bass player for Church services for the past 8 years.
