Jonathan received his training at Houston Baptist University in 2016 where he received a degree in Music Education. Jonathan has taught lessons through public school districts, Guitar Center Lessons (where he served as instructor and later as Department Manager) and as an independent private teacher.
Jonathan is also a professional musician, performing shows around the city every week.
Thanks to his expert training, Jonathan is able to customize and adjust every lesson to suit each student's individual needs and learning traits in order to optimize enjoyment and success.
In lessons, all facets of music can be addressed, including music theory, tempo and rhythm, improvisation and soloing, grooves, ear training and any other techniques needing to be developed.
Another major focus in lessons is helping each student develop their own "voice" in their playing. This is the most rewarding part of being a musician, as learning how to develop your playing to channel your own mental, physical and emotional feelings leads to great self discovery, self confidence and awareness. It is also a great stress reliever and can be very therapeutic!
If You Have To Ask is an 8 piece band that plays mostly funk, hip hop and jazz originals, with some covers mixed in. With every member being highly talented on their instrument, we are able to add improvisational inspiration on every performance. This gives our shows a very organic, engaging and energy filled feel! We are currently preparing for our first 5 track EP.
Teaching lessons in bass, all woodwind and brass instruments, music theory, composition, recital performance and practice, and general music.
As a musician, I have studied music in all genres and styles. This has allowed me to contract myself as a bass player for bands needing someone to substitute for a show.
I have performed with numerous different bands, covering many different styles of music such as: blues, latin, rock, funk, soul, jazz, classical, rap, hip hop, and pop. I have played all types of shows as well, including weddings/private events, bar/restaurants, festivals and concert venues.
Several gigs have required me to learn a large amount of songs (some as much as 40-50!) in only a matter of a few days and perform with musicians I have never met before.
I also have served as a bass player for Church services for the past 8 years.
As manager over Guitar Center Lessons, I helped instructors develop the best lessons possible for their students. I also helped each student find the best instructor for their needs. Under my tenure, I also coordinated a very successful and large student recital, which featured over 20 different student performances! I also was responsible for interviewing, hiring, and training new associates and instructors!
Taught private and group lessons in Electric Bass, Upright Bass, and Low Brass instruments! Also assisted with Open House and Jam Night presentations and performances.
Dowling Music was a former sheet music store, offering all levels of printed sheet music for purchase. I worked with customers on identifying which publication is appropriate for their studies. This benefited me greatly as I have become very familiar with the most effective teaching/method books and what each has to offer.
Operating as Interim Pep Band Director, I was responsible for:
Auditioning members for Band to perform at Collegiate Basketball games.
Coordinating and leading rehearsals.
Selecting and rehearsing all music performed,
Coordinating and creating schedules for pep band performances.
Assisted with the High School's summer marching band camp. I worked extensively with the low brass sections on both musical performance and marching techniques.
Begun in 1920 as the Texas Band Teachers Association, the Texas Music Educators Association is an organization of over 10,000 school music educators dedicated to promoting excellence in music education. TMEA is comprised of five divisions: Band, Orchestra, Vocal, Elementary and College. On behalf of its members and Texas schoolchildren, TMEA carefully monitors the actions of all state decision-making bodies on issues affecting fine arts instruction in Texas. In addition to many member benefits, TMEA offers professional development opportunities for its members with Region workshops and especially with its annual Clinic/Convention. TMEA supports the future of music education by offering scholarships to music education majors and by sponsoring the Texas Future Music Educators, an organization through which high school students interested in careers in music education learn more about what to expect in their college education and future careers.
