I am currently the violin teacher for PS69. I have over 50 students in that elementary school who receive nearly 3 hours of violin instruction weekly. I also maintain a private studio, teaching mainly from my apartment, and perform regularly as a freelance musician. I am a part of the Brooklyn Youth Music Project summer camp where I teach orchestra and chamber music. I studied performance at the New England Conservatory of Music, and have since been teaching and performing extensively.
Lessons cover set up, technique, repertoire, expression, and generally include music from the classical and fiddle genres, although I am happy to add other songs that get the students really excited.
Practicing is a central part of lessons. It is often difficult to encourage a student to practice, but this level of independent work and problem solving is one of the key lessons involved in studying an instrument.
Teaching group lessons to students grades 1-5. Students learn to read music, to understand rhythm, and gain performing experience through their school concerts.
Teacher for Brooklyn Youth Music Project's summer camp. I help run rehearsals for orchestra and teach chamber music. I will be returning this year for my fourth summer.
Fantastic teacher. Tons of positive energy and encouragement. Very willing to help me work on songs of my own choosing and able to figure them out in just a few minutes. With her we worked on country style fiddling.
Joanna is a very good violin instructor. She's very clear when she is teaching my daughter. Would very much recommend her to teach other students.
