I believe you can sing! Whether you’re a beginner wanting to find your voice, or a more experienced singer looking to further refine your natural talent, I’ll be there with you every step along the way. I began singing in choirs in the third grade. In middle school, I had a very enthusiastic and supportive sixth grade choir teacher who encouraged me to see where music would take me. By 2000, I had also taken up the violin with a private teacher. I took my first private voice lesson in 2004, and began to benefit immensely from the personal attention and support that lessons provide. I later studied at Texas Tech University, where I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. In my time at Tech, I was a member of the Symphony Orchestra, Women’s Chorus, University Choir, Madrigal Singers, Jazz Ensembles I/II, Lubbock Moonlight Musicals, and studied privately under several incredible faculty members. My favorite musical experience in college was singing with the University Choir at Carnegie Hall in May of 2010. I continue to play violin and currently use my classical training to teach choir, voice, and mariachi violin at a public high school in the Dallas area. When I’m not teaching or performing, I enjoy practicing yoga, riding bikes, spending time with my fiancé, making jewelry, and learning Spanish. *** Lesson Details *** Unlike other instruments, the voice is not something you take out of a case and then put away when you’re finished playing it. It is unique to you, and has unlimited potential. Simply put, you don’t know if you can do it until you try. If you’re here, I know you’re ready to discover where your voice wants to take you! In our lessons, we will begin by building a strong foundation of posture, breath support, tone production, and placement. Once those basic elements are set, there is no limit to what you can achieve! I want to build versatile and well-rounded singers, but I also want you to have the freedom to sing the music you love. You are encouraged to bring any solo or audition pieces you want to prepare, but we can also work on your favorites. We will work to find a balance that works best for your vocal development. If you choose to study violin with me, it is essential that you have your own instrument to practice with at home. Most beginning violin students rent their instruments at first. In our lessons will work on appropriate playing/bowing technique, music reading skills, and intonation. Repertoire selected will vary based on your experience level and personal goals. Understand that learning to sing or play an instrument doesn’t happen over night. It may look easy on TV, but the reality is that life is not like an episode of Glee or American Idol. Those performers had to start somewhere, work extremely hard to get to where they are, and continually work to improve and excel in a competitive atmosphere. As your teacher, I will use what I know to help you grow. Whatever your goal(s) are, with positivity and determination, we will strive to reach them together. At the very least, we will build confidence in ourselves as musicians, and trust in the gifts you have to share! *** Studio Equipment *** Upstairs loft music area w/ seating for parents *** Travel Equipment *** I would provide the keyboard for use in voice lesson that occurs in my home, an audio/video recording of the lesson if requested, and some initial repertoire to start with. The student would be encouraged to bring any repertoire they are interested in learning. For high school singers I will have access to the All-State pieces after I return from TCDA in late July. Violin students would be expected to bring their own instruments. All students would need to keep a binder with a practice log and lesson notes each week. *** Specialties *** I am classically trained in voice with additional experience singing vocal jazz, pop, and musical theatre styles. I have played the violin for 10 years in orchestral, religious, wedding, mariachi, improvisational settings.
