Contrary to the popular belief that singing is an innate talent whether you are born with or you are not, singing is a skill that could be learned just like driving. The mechanism of voice production could be separated into chunks and trained accordingly. I am classically trained vocally, with an intensive vocal pedagogy training certificate that requires more than twenty hours of vocal teaching analysis/observation and more than thirty hours of voice teaching in-depth training at New York Vocal Coaching with its founder Justin Stoney. Yes, I am a voice technician that knows how the voice works and ready to help you hone your own voice! I know how voice works and I know every voice exercise should have purposes, and what one person needs, the other person probably does not need at all. So I will keep you safe on the way by tuning in to YOUR voice and YOUR needs. What singing is - Singing is healing. Singing is a prayer. Singing is the soul’s language. When we turn off our judgmental storm inside our head and be one with our gut feeling and our hearts, the notes flow out effortlessly. In a sense, singing is meditating. And a singing lesson is a zen session. Struggling, suffering, shouting, straining, would only cause pain in the vocal folds and produce sounds not so friendly to the ears. We learn how to trust out instinct and intuition, relax ourselves in different shades of emotions, hold onto our true selves no matter what note or words we are singing. So in a way, singing is a journey to finding your personal truth, with hours and hours of zen time to find your center and express the life inside you. What singing is not- Singing is NOT a competition. Singing is NOT merely hitting the right notes at the right time like playing a computer game or handling some machinery. We cannot directly control the muscles involved in singing like we control the hands playing the piano. We have to surrender to a certain extent. To God, to the world, whatever your world view integrates it. It has a gesture of surrendering and being in the flow. The best things is, eventually your singing spills over to every area of your life. When the pain of the life crushes you down and you feel trapped in a misty maze, singing is the light that shows you the way and tells you that you are okay. The more you find the truth inside you with singing, the more you shine; the more passion you feel inside yourself; the more you could feel the life force, carrying you through the ups and downs of this world.
