Hello fellow and future musicians, and thanks for checking out my profile!
To tell you a little about myself, I was exposed to music at a very young age since my dad was a musician. I first picked up the drums at the age of 5, and took piano lessons for a year when I was 6. I later played the saxophone in 4th grade, and finally discovered the guitar when I was 9. (Ironic since my dad is a guitarist and the guitar was around the house forever!) He showed me my first chords and really got me started on the instrument, and I played in several local bands in high school playing a range of musical styles from rock, blues, funk, and reggae. I really didn't take music seriously until I was in college, and began studying under Jerry Coelho, a member of the very first graduating class of the Guitar Institute of Technology in Hollywood, CA, and Dominic Castillo, a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, who was a student of Jerry's as well. After studying under these talented musicians, I went on to pursue my education in music and received my BA in Music from San Jose State University in 2004. I started teaching music privately during my time with Jerry and Dominic and continued to teach during college up until the present, and have taught hundreds of students since. I now live in San Diego where I teach, work as a freelance musician, and play in local funk/jazz/rock group Science Fiction Jazz and gypsy/kickstomp outfit Quel Bordel!
*** Lesson Details ***
I am a very easy going, friendly individual who believes that learning music is built upon a strong relationship between teacher and student. This relationship involves good communication, honesty, open mindedness, and most importantly the desire to LEARN and have FUN. I approach teaching music by knowing and understanding the student's musical goals, and teaching fundamentals, theory, and technique through the style(s) of music that the student wants to learn. For beginners, I tend to teach basic techniques and chords through simple songs to get the student playing music as quickly as possible.

So far so good! My first lesson, and even though I broke a string RIGHT before the lesson, Aaron still was able to work with me.
I was a little nervous about an online lesson but Aaron made it easy. The video quality from Take Lessons is really clear and there were no hiccups or drags. Looking forward to the next one!
It was awesome! I learned how to read chords, how to ensure my chords are clean, how to tune my ukulele, and play a few chords all in one session.
Aaron is a great instructor who is patient and does not talk over your head. His suggestions make an immediate impact. I look forward to developing my Banjo playing skills under his instruction.
Aaron has been very patient with my my 8-year daughter, who has been dying to learn how to play the banjo. He is a great teacher and I'd recommend him to anyone!
For the past couple months, I've been holding down the drum chair for a local San Diego band Aaron and I play with regularly called Quel Bordel! Aaron is super passionate about creating music and provides a fun atmosphere when playing live. He's encouraging, quick witted, enthusiastic and REALLY GOOD! Watching a crowd go crazy during his solos is definitely a testament to his skill as a guitar player and performer. Playing with someone with such a high skill set pushes me to play better myself and hopefully so will you!+ Read More
Aaron is really patient. I'm grateful for the lessons.
He was very good in explaining the steps to Jessica and took time with her to make sure she understood.
Fantastic experience!! I feel like my excitement was only increased by Aaron's attitude and ease in instruction! He made the lesson approachable and relaxed while learning the overall basics! Great time, I can't wait for my next lesson!
Great instructor! My son is high functioning autistic and I don't think we could have gotten anyone better. My dad was the one who found thus website and chose this instructor. I am so grateful!
I have no experience at all with music, let alone a banjo and am so very glad I found Aaron for a teacher. He took the time in the beginning to discuss my expectations and goals and has been very patient with me. He is a very knowledgeable musician and I look forward to my lessons. It is my pleasure to be his student.+ Read More
Aaron is a fantastic music teacher. He takes the time to personally taylor the lessons to your preference and style, he patiently squashes bad habits and makes the most of the lesson time. I whole heartedly recommend him.
Excellent instructor. Easy to follow, even for a complete novice such as myself.
My two teenage boys really enjoy Aaron's lessons and are having great success. He has a great methodical approach to learning that both makes sense, is easy to follow and practice, and is effective. The boys have fun and enjoy his patience and how he reviews what was learned and practiced from previous lessons.+ Read More
My son looks forward to lessons every week with Aaron. Thanks for sharing your talent.
My daughter really enjoyed the lesson and looks forward to future lessons.
Aaron is very personable and flexible. Highly recommend.
Aaron does a great job working with my 7-year old son. He is very encouraging and packs a lot into a 30 minute lesson.
My son said he wanted to take banjo lessons. I asked him to look on-line to find someone in our area. He came back to me to say that he had found exactly who he wanted to teach him, and it was Aaron. I was quite skeptical that an on-line lesson could actually be productive, but I said we could try it and see. And so happy we did. Aaron is such a great teacher! He is actually able to teach on-line and teach really well. My son has made a lot of progress in playing claw hammer banjo. Aaron is completely positive and always encouraging, and my son thinks he's the greatest! I do too!+ Read More

Great first leson
I am a beginning Banjo player and I have been taking lessons with Aaron for about 7 months since retiring. He takes the frustration out of learning by being patient and guiding you through the learning process. Great teacher and I highly recommend him.
Aaron has been GREAT with my son. He is only 4 and begged for lessons. Aaron is very accepting and patient! Thank you for working with us.
He has great patience and makes the instructions clear. He is very nice and friendly.
I took my two boys one is 8 yrs. old and the other one is 14 yrs. old and both they never had any experience on playing the guitar and when they started going with Aaron, my kids where so happy to have a nice and knowledgeable instructor, they do know now how to read notes and they starting to play the guitar. Aaron has a lot of patience when it comes to kids and teenagers that starting to want to play the guitar, Aaron will explain and teach in a manner that kids want to go back the very next day and also teaches on a way it's fun for them and not boring. I will give Aaron 5 stars because he is a great instructor.+ Read More
We love Aaron! My 9-year-old daughter is taking beginner guitar lessons. He's very patient and teaches at a pace that she's comfortable with. He's helpful in correcting her mistakes and is very encouraging. This has allowed her to grow an abundance of new skills. She also teaches them to me! Through this experience, she has taken a new interest in ukulele as well.
Aaron's very knowledgeable, talented and is accommodating to our busy schedule. Plus he's very funny! I've also learned a lot in this process as an observer. I'd definitely recommend him as a teacher to anyone who is a beginner or would like advance their skills.
I started working with Aaron a few months ago. Previously, I had never even picked up a banjo. Aaron has shown a great deal of patience and expertise with me in my practice. Since I began, I have learned some basics and have gained a pretty good understanding of this instrument and how it works. With Aaron's tutelage, I have learned to play 4 - 5 songs within a 2 1/2 month period of time! I would highly recommend Aaron as a teacher/coach to anyone interested in learning to play the banjo or guitar. Not only is he an extremely gifted musician, but he can teach as well!+ Read More
I had basically no experience when I started taking lessons with Aaron and he was incredibly helpful and patient as he started me off from the basics of tuning, chords, etc. into more complex chord switching and actually playing songs.
The experience taking lessons with Aaron has been amazing and I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for an extremely knowledgable and patient instructor!
Aaron, is a true professional, he laid down a great foundation for me, tips and ideas that i never would have thought about, with that i have improved 10 fold on my Banjo. I also caught one of his live shows Downtown, San Diego.... This guy rocks!
Learned so much about music theory
Aaron is a really fantastic teacher who is incredibly reliable, professional and invested in teaching. He's a fantastic guitar player and I learned a lot about music theory.
Talented musician that can really teach!
Aaron did an amazing job teaching the core fundamentals I needed to grow as a beginner. He is a talented musician that is also well educated and knowledgeable in music theory. When it comes to teaching, he is second to none! He worked with me to understand what my goals were and developed a plan to accomplish them. During this time Aaron went out of his way to quickly respond to any questions I had and provide me with videos he made "on the fly" so I could refer to them later while practicing at home. I will definitely be taking more lessons from Aaron in the future.
Aaron is an awesome teacher!
Aaron has continued to help me perfect me skills as a ukulele player. My family has been very impressed with the improvements I have made with Aaron. My wife especially has noticed how much quicker my fingers have gotten! Aaron has proven to be reliable, up beat, positive and he listens to what I want to learn and hears what I need to perfect. He has helped me in so many ways and I recommend him as a teacher to anyone who wants to improve their playing.
Amazing banjo teacher for adult student
Aaron is a great teacher - and I'm sure it doesn't matter what instrument he is teaching. For me, it's the banjo. He makes in fun, tailors his teaching to what you want to learn and what type of music you like, is very patient (I'm an absolute beginner), and reliable.
He's helped me get some important basics down that I never could have just scrolling through YouTube for instructional videos. I would recommend Aaron to any parents or students any age out there. You'll be happy you went with him.
I recommend Aaron to anyone and everyone for his services in teaching music!
I started guitar lessons with Aaron when I was 11 years old and stayed his student till I was 17!!! He has taught me so much about guitar and how to play! We would work on cover songs and a little bit about music theory. He kept the learning fun and not boring with the music theory, since I was young. He showed me the fun, musical side to playing and learning songs. But see, thats what was cool about it. Now that I'm 19 and in college studying music, I think back, if it wasn't for Aaron and the way he taught me; I might not be that into learning more about music. As I got older I started to see the puzzle pieces of music come together. There is a whole structure to writing songs and music and Aaron knew, that for me, the best way to learn was to start with songs and let my own curiosity about music be my drive and determination to learn more about it and how to write it!!! Aaron and I have stayed close friends over the years. He is still really helpful to this day because not to long ago i called him up and asked for some advice on music colleges as well as some good music books to learn from. Thats what is so cool about Aaron, he will always help his students out in the best way he can! :)
I had taught myself guitar in college, and haven't really played much since. I decided to get back into it, and Aaron has been an outstanding teacher. I can pretty much read tab and learn songs on my own, but with Aaron, we break down the theory behind the songs. This is a great way to learn because I'm learning theory in the context of learning all these different songs that I love. He is also teaching me things like scales and improvisation, all within the context of the songs I choose. This type of learning makes classes REALLY fun.
Aaron is patient, flexible, easy-going and highly knowledgable. All of which adds up to an excellent teacher. I can't recommend him highly enough!
When I first started as a musician and a guitarist, I didn't really have much of an interest in it until I met my first guitar instructor Aaron. He made learning fun, challenging but most of all effective and practical. I learned from the very beginning all the way to intermediate-advanced musical concepts that still help me today. His skill as a jazz musician is profound and very professional, making him a very sought after guitar instructor where I received lessons from him. Aaron has set the foundation for my future career in music, which is something I can never forget or repay him for be it monetary or not, his inspiration to teach and help me get to the level of playing I wished to be at was his best attribute, and I say that's what really matters. Give him a chance and I'm absolutely sure you will not regret it!

I took guitar lessons from Aaron for about 5 years and it was brutal the first year and a half, since it was the first genuine music training/instruction I'd really received in my life.
He was understanding of my beginner status and ALWAYS made sure I had memorized all the basic chords, notes, melodies, etc. before moving onto the intermediate and eventually advanced techniques.
He answered any question I had promptly and with a full explanation, -ex: he'd play the part of a song I had a hard time with, then asked me to play it on my axe, and at my own pace- which was good considering I liked experimenting out harder stuff when I still considered myself just a real good amatuer.
On top of all that he keeps up with the times, so that newest film or game thats come out, he'll know what your talking about. A nice change from the old geezers who I've received music tips from who didn't know what an Xbox is.
The top choice for a guitar instructor if you live in the San Diego area.
Enjoyed the lessons so far. I'm steadily gaining more confidence and feel increasingly more motivated to practice switching between chords. Aaron leaves me with a positive impression of his teaching style.
Aaron really takes the time to find out what styles of music are important to you, and keeps the lessons fun and engaging! I have had an awesome time learning the ukulele so far and am excited to continue my learning!
