Knitting Lessons in Valley Stream. Amazing Teachers.

Billie began knitting at age 4. Over the decades she has knit everything from slippers, afghans, jackets, sweaters, baby clothes to dishtowels. She is a retired educational consultant who worked with parents and teachers to bring learning toys to children in their most formative years. She understands how life in our fast-paced world can lead one to feel the need to multi-task. Knitting allows you to do just that! You can have conversations or watch a film on Netflix while turning a piece of yarn into something useful, one stitch at a time. But it's also very relaxing, once you're up to speed. Billie is a patient teacher who will ensure that you'll be knitting in no time.

In your first class you'll learn how to cast on, and do the knit and purl stitches.
If time permits, you'll also learn how to bind off. Billie can help you select patterns to make things that will be at the right skill level for you.

I love knitting, enjoying making a huge variety of items using many different techniques. I knit using the English style, having grown up in Cheshire, England, but also knit using the Continental style of knitting too. I have been teaching knitting in groups and on a one to one basis for a few years. My students have ranged in age from 8 years old to 80 years old.

I offer patient guidance and encouragement. I see knitting as a process of growth and development- moving forward at a pace that the student is comfortable as we cultivate confidence and technique.

With the knitting lessons, we'll start out learning how to prepare your piece, read basic patterns, learn how to cast on and off. We'll go through the basic stitches (knit and purl), and how to use them to make a scarf.

I believe knitting is a wonderful skill and a great, relaxing way to pass the time. Whether you are a beginner or a past knitter looking to review the basics, I would love to help! I do my best to adapt my teaching style to the student so that there is as little frustration as possible. Above all, I want my students to enjoy learning and give them a solid base to advance their skills.
I teach a few basic stitches and techniques such as:
- regular knit stitch
- purl stitch
- casting on
- casting off
- stockinette
- rib stitch

Almost any size needles and yarn should be fine.
I also recommend bamboo or wooden knitting needles (rather than metal) for first-time beginners but not a requirement. We will work with what you have. Most importantly, I hope you enjoy learning and develop an appreciation for the art of knitting. :)

From learning to cast on and work a knit stitch to understanding techniques like brioche, cables or mosaic, I believe knitting should be fun and enjoyable - not stressful - and is attainable by all!
