About Azuri
Learning is one of my main pursuits. My name is Azuri and I have studied music for over a decade and have my degree in guitar performance from musicians institute. I've had the gift of studying many artistic crafts and spend my time today trying to further my own study, while sharing what I've learned with my students.

Art is one of the most important tools we have as a culture and contains in it a shared history, tradition and the keys to future ones. Whether it be through the primal qualities of music or the impulses of dance, the records of drawing or descriptions of writing, these are the tools for our expression. I have had the great fortune to study, in many different settings, a small piece of these traditions and sharing them is paramount in respect to receiving them. I love sharing knowledge and I hope to elevate yours as a st
udent.

Teaching Philosophy -

My teaching philosophy is built on well rounded communication, explanation and examples. So, that a student can truly understand and learn a topic, surrounded in a very humorous, light and supportive environment.
Along with being provided good information, a student learns better and feels more motivated to learn when there is a balance of positive support and confidence building accompanied by constructive criticism and examples/information that can help a student assess what ever walls they may be meeting in their musical growth.

I understand that all students/artists have different goals they wish to achieve. So it is very important to me to accommodate each individuals needs and wants to help them grow in the fields they wish too; However, In that I have played music for a long time, I understand there are certain things that a student may not have been exposed to yet; It is important that while focusing on a students artistic goals they respect and are open to the suggestion and guidance of their teacher.

I truly believe music has an amazing influence on the world and has the ability to change peoples way of thinking. Therefore, I try and keep an open awareness to all music, so that I can understand all different musical languages utilized to communicate to people, and I don't believe I will ever know them all. I hold it to attention to influence my students somewhat similarly so that they can shape the landscape of how we communicate musically in the future.

I also try and be very patient with my students. Knowing that when I feel rushed, it makes information more difficult to comprehend, remember and allocate. I love watching the gears run in my students head, so I try and provide information that pushes a student but is within their abilities.

HUMOR is very important. I like to break people out of their shell by telling a joke and hopefully getting one back, so they feel more comfortable and free. One of a Artists worst enemies are nerves. Keeping things light-hearted and maybe even a little small talk can be very helpful to a students development and growth on a topic. After all, Art is meant to be fun and we should enjoy every moment of it, in fact we should enjoy every moment in life period.

I understand music requires focus and discipline and I have certain expectation of a student to understand that and practice. You can't buy chops, you can't buy music theory etc. you can get help but eventually your the one who must understand it and play it.

I am here to help you. Based on what I know and what I have extensively studied, I will do all that I can to help you achieve your musical goals. I am here to answer your questions and help you grow. I love teaching because I love sharing knowledge; As long as your seek it, it is here for you. Otherwise, I'd still love to hear some jokes.

I'm very disciplined but am also very light hearted. It's important for me to assess things seriously, so that one can understand a topic or piece of information.

I generate my lessons based on the individuals needs and therefore draw from various curriculums, sources and examples, such as : MI curriculum for ear training, Theory, Single string Technique, Reading, Rhythm guitar, Ted Greenes Chord Chemistry, Berklee Guitar Method, as well as The Real Book, other artist books(Eric Clapton, etc.) The Guitar Players Hand Book, Bach pieces and self developed curriculums, relative to the topic at hand and students personal goals, amongst many others.

-Beginning students within three months of consistent lessons should have the ability to solo and playing chords to songs that they are interested in and songs provided in the lesson along with a basic understanding of the major scale and its relationship to all of the diatonic music.

-intermediate students should have an elevated understanding of scale and chord patters along with the theory that explains modal relationships and use of these concepts.

-Advanced students should learn all of diatonic scale shapes and modes assuming they don't already know them in which case their specifically situation will be assessed

-Professional students I expect to have specific questions therefore where they grow should be largely subjective.

Overall, in a short amount of time on a scale of 1 - 10 I expect to in three months at-least elevate a students musical abilities one full point if not more.

About Kelvin
I am a highly organized, outcome-driven and motivated professional musician and educator with solid experience in the classroom. For the past 25 years, I have been employed with Amati music academy and seven years on the faculty of University of St Francis.
I am very comfortable with all aspects of the current music syllabus, including teaching musical concepts (such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture and structure) as well as performance, composition. I am fully qualified, with a Bachelor of Education in Music, Double Masters in music performance and education from University of Nottingham.
I am proficient in classical, jazz and Celtic fiddle violin and possess solid skills in piano (grade 8-13) Royal conservatory system.
Throughout my teaching career, I have been driven to help students achieve their very best. I str
ongly believe that music has the power to change lives – to enhance the social, cultural and spiritual lives of people, and serve as a profound medium of personal expression. Professional perform experience: The Chicago, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Three tours with Moody Blues, YoYo Ma etc....
The most important thing I look for in a student is communication skills, as well as talent. I like to nurture students and help identify their individual strengths, which is a key factor in shaping a musical persona that will make its mark both on and offstage. I do not advocate a uniform technique for all students. Physical differences and learning styles are always taken into consideration. Potential is as important to me as early achievements and experience. My goal is to help students become self-sufficient, discriminating artists. I discuss practice techniques often and develop individualized scale routines. I encourage initiative and expressive musicality as well as precision. Above all, music needs to bring obvious joy to the student, regardless of the difficulties.”

Rich was happy after the first class and he started to wonder, would Kelvin be available to teach him a guitar lessons as well (we thought it is a great beginning) :)

Also, Kelvin immediately pointed out that the violin we have picked is too small for Rich, where other teacher didn't say anything about it. We changed the size and it helped a lot with holding violin and feeling more comfortable. Thank you !

Kelvin is a great teacher. He understands and teaches in a way that makes sense to me. If you’ve played the Banjo you know the teacher needs a lot of patience and he does. He provides the right direction and more importantly listens to my questions. There is no doubt in my mind if you have to learn or improve your banjo skills Kelvin can help.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Since I schedule classes through other outlets my availability varies. I've marked availability only to make my profile visible to potential students so, the availability you see is not my actual availability. Since my availability is never fixed and I'd like to avoid disappointing booking experiences, please contact me at 202-559-7981 to check my availability. If we can confirm a meeting time, I'll mark that availability on the Take Lessons site and you can book and confirm our meeting through there.

Thank you for considering me in your search for photography instruction.

It doesn't matter whether you use a film or digital camera. The camera is a tool that you use to create photographs.

During your photography class with me you’ll learn to use your camera and you’ll learn the skills that you need to
use your camera effectively and with confidence.

If you’re just getting started or a more advanced photographer, I offer a variety of photography courses that are geared toward a wide range of skill levels and interests.

My approach to teaching has been shaped by my photography teachers and by my experience working as a professional photographer. While I learned a lot about the craft of photography from good teachers, I learned to be a photographer by using my camera and mindfully applying what I learned from my teachers during the process of creating a photograph.

I think the best way to learn something is to learn by doing it and I make sure that we have plenty of time to practice what we cover during our time together in class. If you’re in a multi-week class, you’ll get homework too. Homework aimed at getting you to utilize the lessons we cover in class so you can create photographs that are uniquely your own.

As a participant in my photography classes you’ll get a good understanding of the material being presented in addition to hands on practical experience. What you won’t get are my judgments about your work, instead you’ll be encouraged to formulate your own opinions about your work and then I’ll offer you guidance based on your personal goals in photography.

Whether you are using a film SLR, a digital SLR (DSLR ), or another type of camera, I’ll help you to be the best photographer that you can be.

Courses are offered in Washington, DC or online. Private instruction and custom group workshops are also available.

I have a bachelors degree in printmaking and oil painting and spent some time in Florence, Italy studying painting and drawing through the high renaissance masters. Currently I draw and paint in my spare time. I love teaching art as a way to connect with other artist and creative people who like talking about and creating art.

Through introducing or reviewing the fundamental principles in art and applying those to the lessons and exercises I assign for after class hours, you’ll see yourself improve week after week and gain more confidence in your artistic ability. I create a custom syllabus for you to review and work in things you’d like to try, certain mediums or subject matter to make it more appealing to you.

Making art should be fun and restorative! There’s a reason all of Bob Ross’s trees and clouds were so happy! Often times my
students and I will have class in a park on a nice day or at museum.

Hello! I'm Jen and I've been a professional, photojournalistic-style wedding photographer for the past 11 years. I bring a lot of passion to my work, and I love teaching and mentoring photographers one-one-one at all different experience levels. Before I was a photographer, I taught undergraduate Sociology and have always loved teaching. I'm excited at the opportunity to teach something I'm so passionate about again!

Jen is simply fantastic. A few months ago, I hired her for private lessons to help break through some technical and artistic barriers in my photography. Essentially, I was getting inconsistent results and wasn't able to translate the observations about the good shots into techniques for learning from them and leveraging them in the future.

From the beginning, Jen was focused on my objectives and concerns, and was able to tailor a curriculum to focus on those aspects. She reviewed my existing work with a great mix of enthusiasm and constructive analysis, and the small amount of apprehension I had about having a professional critique my shots evaporated pretty quickly. Jen is very personable and clearly on your side, which makes the feedback cycle easy and light. With her help, we were able to break down some of the things I liked about my own photography, but wasn't making full or considered use of. We also identified a number of ways in which I could improve bringing my own style into more of the process, both behind the camera and in editing choices.

In the field, there's a lot of good dialogue about how to approach a given scene, how to efficiently explore it for non-obvious opportunities, and how to convey a sense of story (one of my particular weaknesses). As one would expect, she has solid technical skills and is able to quickly troubleshoot tricky lighting situations and make suggestions about how to approach exposure/DoF/focal length to align with the intended mood. The feedback is always friendly and typically very pragmatic. I've already found the number of shots making it past the initial cull increasing, at a time when I'm also becoming more critical about what makes for a good shot.

Overall, Jen's guidance has had a sizable impact to my photography in a relatively short time. One of the best parts about making it past some of those persistent stumbling blocks is how much more enjoyable my time behind the camera has become. Would definitely recommend her to anyone seeking to improve their own photography, or move into the world of professional photography.

I’ve had multiple opportunities to learn about wedding photography from Jen and every experience has been so positive and helpful. Not only does she help me with technical aspects of shooting but also provides me with any random tip or trick that might make shooting easier. Jen has so much knowledge when it comes to photography and she’s really an amazing teacher. It’s clear that she loves what she does and that she really enjoys teaching! I also want to add that she’s just a great person to be around as well. She’s awesome to just chat and hangout with. It’s always felt so relaxed and comfortable. I highly recommend learning from Jen at any opportunity. She truly is awesome!
