Karen is a wonderful teacher. Very experienced and patient with a beginner.

Karen is so friendly, sweet, and methodical in teaching style. It is wonderful to be introduced to dulcimer with her and - literally - learn how to fine tune my instrument with her tips and encouragement. She makes me even more excited to tune and play my instrument. I can easily get happily lost simply in the tuning process with my dulcimer as it brings me a lot of joy just to hear the notes come into tune and playing very small, minor amounts of things on my dulcimer as is... it is so nice to have a guide like Karen to help me better to understand and dance with my dulcimer, learn about music and how the dulcimer strings are arranged, and how to hold the hammers! I thought I was excited to learn before... I'm even more happy and excited now and have some clear, down to earth steps to begin to actually really play with my instrument!

My initial instruction follows the John Sprague school method, which focuses on precise articulation of ornamentation, leading into pipe band music.

Once a grounding in pipe band technique has been achieved, I can continue to work with students along the pipe band path through the intermediate level, or branch off into folk/kitchen piping, informed my extensive experience as a fiddler.

I am also willing to teach small pipe and border pipe students.

About Peter

I am a traditional Scottish musician specializing in 18th century music. I have studied Highland bag piping since 2001 and Scottish Fiddling since 2002 (with a background in classical violin). I teach both Scottish Fiddle and Highland Bagpipes, as well as Scottish Small pipes and Border pipes. I

I started taking lessons with Peter in person before the pandemic in his studio. He is very helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. When I initially told him that I was looking to learn to play the medieval bagpipes, he was very upfront in saying that he did not have any experience with medieval bagpipes, but he was willing to try if I was.

After the pandemic began we started with remote lessons and I find them just as useful- if more convenient. I highly recommend Peter as an instructor.

Very thoughtful lesson!

Peter is an outstanding instructor! He has a nice space for teaching and works to understand where the student is starting from - making sure to emphasize a base of fundamentals that will see you through for the rest of your piping career. I highly recommend him!

Andrew is a fantastic teacher - patient, very knowledgeable and professional. I was shocked by how quickly I was able to progress from a complete beginner to being able to play full pieces.
