Piano technique, practice strategies, and performance practice.

About Steven
The piano has always been my greatest passion; I have never been able to imagine life without it. I was very fortunate to have had the benefit of a great education in music starting at an early age. My goal as pianist and teacher is to pass on the wisdom of my own teachers, as well as my enthusiasm for this great instrument and the rich repertoire of music written for it.

I received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California, where I was a student of Daniel Pollack for 12 years. In order to become the best teacher possible, I minored in Music Education, gaining experience in the major theories of music pedagogy and teaching techniques. In teaching, I strive to create an optimal blend of old and new by combining the great and time-honored traditions of piano playing, as instilled in me through my pi
ano studies, with recent discoveries and advents in the field of music pedagogy.

My performing experiences have taken me across great distances in time and space, with performances in major halls across the globe, featuring music of over five centuries. I have commissioned new works and performed numerous premieres, and have also played music of the Renaissance and early Baroque on the Harpsichord. I have also accompanied singers and played chamber music extensively.

*** Lesson Details ***
Playing the piano is a journey of discovery and joy that lasts a lifetime. The rewards of playing extend far beyond the piano, bearing dividends in all areas of music, as well as outside of music. Such important basic skills as concentration, tenacity, and delaying of gratification, are promoted from the outset of piano lessons, and are readily adaptable to other fields and challenges. At the same time, students of all levels, from 6 months of lessons to several years of experience, can develop and maintain a repertoire of pieces to present to family and friends, and to play for their own gratification and self-esteem.

My guiding philosophy in teaching is that everyone can learn to play the piano with hard work and good training. Talent is neither necessary, nor sufficient in itself to produce great pianists. What will promote excellence in piano playing is a thorough and well-rounded grounding in the various aspects of music, including music theory, piano technique, music history, and repertoire-building. I teach these and many other components of music in all my lessons. I use method books with earlier level students and gradually incorporate works from the classical repertoire. I assign enjoyable, beneficial music theory projects, rhythmic exercises, and teach pieces of differing genres, styles, and demands to keep lessons varied and interesting. Several times a year, our hard work is shared with others at student recitals, where family and strangers alike join students in the joy of music and the piano.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The teacher's home studio includes a large studio space with 2 grand pianos side by side so the student learn by example where applicable. Seating is also available for family and guests. There is also a warm up studio room for students that arrive early and are waiting to start their lesson.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students will need access to a piano or keyboard for regular practicing.

*** Specialties ***
Piano technique, classical piano repertoire, music theory and aural skills, musicology, accompanying and chamber music.

Brilliant teacher, knows more about music than I'll ever know about anything, and shares exactly the right amount with me each session. He is incredibly patient, upbeat, encouraging, and helpful. When I make mistakes he's constantly patiently encouraging and helping me with various approaches to piano technique. I am a completely new student who could not read notes. Steven is sensitive to how to pace me and shows me new ways of learning that fit my personality and level. I could not imagine a better piano instructor/mentor than Steven. If you're within range of his studio and you're planning to take piano lessons at ANY level, I would strongly urge you to work with Steven. You will learn and thoroughly enjoy the experience!

Learn to play piano and read music. We'll develop the basics.

About Carol
I have taught voice for over twenty years. I studied music at University of California, Santa Barbara, where I received my B.A. I currently work as a professional singer for various local opera companies, music theater groups, churches and temples. I am principal soprano for Opera A La Carte and have also soloed with Repertory Opera Company, Redlands Bowl Festival, Laguna Beach Chorale and Celestial Opera Company. I have worked extensively in Los Angeles schools performing musical assemblies for students in elementary and middle grades through Southland Opera, LA Opera and Guild Opera of Southern California. My teaching experience includes private voice lessons and master classes at Idyllwild School for the Arts.

*** Lesson Details ***
I emphasize breathing techniques to free up the voice to expand your range and ease of singing. In
the lesson, we start with simple warm ups and vocalizes and then apply techniques to the songs you want to sing. I realize each student is different and I customize the lesson to the student's particular needs. I specialize in classical and music theater, however the basics of singing apply to all styles of music. In addition to working on breathing and technique for singing, we'll also focus on interpretation of the songs you are working on as well as how to overcome performance nervousness. Most students find that they are able to sing with more freedom, less tension and will have more confidence as they progress.

I also teach beginning piano, using the John W. Schaum series.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the main room, upright piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
They need to provide a piano or keyboard if I am going to their home.
I have a piano in my home.

*** Specialties ***
I work on using the breath as a fundamental technique for singing. Singing should never hurt. I use a lot of imagery to achieve freedom in singing.

Seth is a good dude. I came across his profile with Take Lessons a month ago, after browsing through other instructors in my area and other schools in my area. He's got the experience and knowledge, so I connected with him for an initial lesson. It was a quick one to get introductions out of the way and a good idea of goals/direction. From there we further honed our plans for my instruction in an hour lesson and are directing our sights on my upcoming auditions. Seth has shown me through simple explanations of theory that his teaching style is very approachable, and additionally, was able to show me good technical skills on working my way around the horn, which is especially useful for someone like me in my twenties who already has a few bad habits (haha). Like I said, he's a good dude, good sense of humor so I feel at ease practicing with him and his knowledge is insane! Not only for saxophone but in so many other areas of music! You'd be doing yourself a favor to take at least an hour lesson from him and see how you go.

Seth and I had a great first lesson. I haven't played in a long time and he gave me helpful pointers on how to improve my embouchure. He gave me positive feedback on my rhythm and constructive feedback on my tone. We worked through some songs together. Next time I will probably ask him to play some more for me so I can hear what I need to improve for a particular song. I highly recommend him.

Hello!

In lessons, expect to get familiar and up close with your piano and gain a real understanding of music. I break things down for you through auditory exercises (ear training), kinesthetic exercises (developing muscle memory) and eventually incorporating visual tools (sight-reading).

I believe in working mainly by ear so you can focus on recognizing sounds and developing rhythm while working on muscle memory and finger strength by doing exercises like scales and different chord voicings (inversions).

For intermediate to advanced students, I challenge them to play the melodies out by ear once we break down the chord progression or bass line in the left hand.

Expect to feel free at the piano with or without sheet music. Expect to understand your favorite songs from a deeper place. Expect to appreciate music more.

Play for me soon!

About Keira
Miss Keira is an artist development coach, residing in Los Angeles, California. She specializes in voice, piano and songwriting and focuses on helping students bridge the gap between technique and creativity, discipline and inspiration.

She began her classical piano studies at the age of four and gained over twenty years of experience in the performing arts before finishing her vocal training at Musicians Institute, the leading contemporary music school in Hollywood.

She went on to perform at some of the most prestigious and upscale venues in Los Angeles, such as The Microsoft Theater, The Beverly Hills Hotel and The Montage, Beverly Hills. Traveling across Southern California and Nevada, she performed in Las Vegas casinos and resorts with various cover bands as the lead singer and keyboardist.

She discovered her passion for
teaching when she realized how impactful music education could be. She found it easy to explain something she was so passionate about and found her own ways of teaching by relating through her lifelong experiences of private instruction. Miss Keira aims for her students to be able to express themselves freely, so she focuses on blending classical technique with improvisational skills, while building confidence.

Miss Keira works with select artist development students, who have a serious passion and drive to work in the industry. She aims to connect these students with resources such as GRAMMY U, MusiCares, Steinway and Sons, etc.

Students can expect a great time learning the basics of how to make music on the piano. We'll start with basic music theory, how to make sense of the piano keys and music notation and exercises for finger dexterity like scales and arpeggios. I am totally into integrating songs and styles of music that you enjoy listening to and would like to learn how to play. I'm well versed in classical piano, jazz, pop, rock and blues. Tell me what you want to learn to play and I'll show you how to play it!

About Lynn
I have been studying voice and piano and performing on stage in various capacities since I was a small child, acting professionally on stage, in films and TV for most of my adult life. I've been blessed to study with countless music luminaries in varying genres, from jazz and classical to rock n' roll and blues.

I studied music at the university level both at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in NYC. I received my BFA in Jazz Vocal Performance from The New School in 2008. I was given an incredible foundation in ear-training, music theory, composition, arranging and song-writing through these institutions.

My diverse music education and experience means I am able to teach music in many different styles and music of many different genres. I can accompany my students on piano a
nd help them to prepare for auditions. I can teach how to read music, to play classically on the piano, to read jazz charts, or help you figure out parts for a chord progression for a pop or rock song.

My acting training is equally many-faceted and I have an incredibly strong foundation based in the teachings of Sanford Meisner, Stanislavsky, Lee Strasberg and Larry Moss. I use the knowledge of these great teachers along with the wisdom I've accumulated from MY mentors over the years in my teaching and coaching.

Lynn is stellar. Her background and training are substantial and impressive. She is prompt, courteous, calm and absolutely wonderful with our daughter (Age 9) who has challenges focusing and staying on task. Lynn is kind, but navigates the lessons confidently, fluidly and with a focused energy. She works with our daughter's playfulness, incorporates humor and positive, encouraging energy into every lesson. Our daughter has shown signs of great improvement with Lynn. Lynn assigns tasks and practicing points each week for our daughter to work on which are balanced and also bring in a component of improvisation, which is SO helpful for kids who have challenges with focusing. About Dr. Ivo
Dear students,
My name is Dr. Ivo, but my students call me Ethan.
I recently moved to Los Angeles but I have taught students, all ages, for more than 15 years in New York City. One of the most important components of my teaching is making sure that students learn skills, which could be retrieved at any time in life, even after stopping piano. Here are some of the highlight of my performance career:

I made my Carnegie Hall debut in 2006, and later took part of numerous music festivals: Fontainebleau France, Viana do Castelo, Portugal, and the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara. Additionally, I participated in master classes given by Jerome Lowenthal, Gilbert Kalish, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Joseph Kalichstein.
In 2017, I earned my Doctoral Degree under the guidance of Dr. Marc Silverman and graduated with honors, including
