My students and I have at least one meeting per week with the goal of preparing them for rated competitions. During this meeting, I will go over tactical themes with the student, challenge him/her with puzzles, go over and discuss Grandmaster games and opening variations, or play training games.

I will also chat with the student and find out what she been doing, what she has been working on, and ask her what problems she has encountered during her training.

About Daniel

Hi, I'm a chess tutor and competitor! I teach students of all ages and skill levels and have volunteered for the non-profit organizations Chess Challenge in DC and Chess Girls DC. I focus on one-on-one lessons with instruction geared towards preparing my students for competitive play. My rate is $50

I am new to chess will likely be a happy newbie for ever. I appreciate Daniel’s patience and willingness to explain details, sometimes multiple times, and answer basic questions about terminology, how to navigate chess sites, etc.
He is flexible with his lesson plans and adjusts them to meet the needs of his student.
Maria
My 14 year old son had several lessons with Daniel and enjoyed them very much. Daniel is clearly passionate both about chess and teaching. His lessons are always planned in advance and you can request specific topic to be covered. He is very patient, and allows student time to think through moves and strategies. After the lesson, he gives you a 'homework' puzzle to solve, which was reviewed in the following lesson. Definitely recommend!

At age 11 I achieved the title of Master, and since then have become an International Master (with 1 Grandmaster norm), 5-time National Champion and am currently the #1 18-year-old on the west coast of the United States. Without chess instruction from the most patient, inspiring, and hardworking chess coaches none of this would have been possible.

I began to play chess at 7 years old and after my coach ended our first class by saying, "Every champion was once a beginner" my youthful imagination ran wild and I was hooked. My early development in chess proved to be nontraditional where my structured classes provided by my school were supplemented by the aggressive, unconventional playing styles I learned from spending my weekends sneaking games in with hustlers at my local chess park. Yet learning these vastly different approaches to the game allowed me to become a more complete player, and after 6 weeks of practice, I could beat every kid in my class and almost defeated my coach. ...

Dipankar has been an amazing coach for my chess. He's thoughtful and precise with his teaching while keeping the lessons fun! Each lesson has been building on the previous one and I highly value his specific approach to helping adult learners of chess improve. I'm very excited to continue to work under his guidance.

When I first started getting lessons from Dipankar, I was rated around 1000 on chess.com. Since then, I've climbed up to 1500! Dipankar has a wonderful way of teaching. He lets you figure things out, and helps you along the way when you get stuck. He's given me great opening recommendations, game analyses (my games and master games), as well as many other resources to continue improving outside the lessons. Dipankar has helped me improve a TON!
Aaron
I have been taking lessons from Dipankar for five weeks. My game has already shown improvement. When I started my rating was 1050, now I am at 1250. That is a significant improvement. His lessons are engaging and he provides a lot of feedback. I recently won a difficult game using the tactics and pointers he provided in a recent lesson. I was elated. I recognized the advancement in my game. This coupled with Dipankar's tutelage continues to encourage me to strive for my goal of attaining a 2300 rating. I look forward to see what else I can achieve under his guidance.

5 Chess Moves That Will Surprise Your Opponent

Chess: Undoubtedly the ultimate head-to-head mental contest, an ancient game of strategy in which  your one and only goal is to outsmart and defeat your opponent’s army (represented of course by the pieces on the board). Chess moves that surprise your opponent are part and parcel of the game, and it would thus behoove you, the player and aspiring chess master, to learn moves that will catch your opponent off guard and bring you victory. And so, without further ado, here are 5 moves to do that …

5 Chess Moves to Up Your Endgame

The end of the game has come. You have successfully out-maneuvered and outfought your opponent, conquering large swaths of the chessboard, and approaching that triumphal moment when you will topple the opponent’s king and declare that he has fallen---in other words, a checkmate (recall that “checkmate” is an anglicization of “shah mat”, Persian for “the king is dead”)… Only to realize that you don’t quite know how to finish the game, which inevitably results in a slapsti …

Chess Rules: a Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

I will admit to you, the reader, that most of the articles I have written thus far assume that the reader is already a fairly avid chess player, who is aware of the basic rules of chess and thus is interested in learning more advanced strategies, traps, and tricks with the goal of decisively defeating the opponent. But, of course, not everybody is born knowing the rules of chess---there are, in fact, many out there who are unfamiliar with the game, and need an introduction. Especially now …
