Originally from Boulder, Colorado, Marty moved to the Phoenix, AZ area eight years ago. Marty has over 20 years of performing and teaching experience. She studied for three years at the School of Music, University of Colorado, Boulder. She has studi
ed in the Masters program in vocal pedagogy and has performed in a variety of venues from blues to opera.

You will find her pedagogy technique to be respectful of the masters that have come before her. She is also open to new techniques from belting (in popular music), to microphone usage skills. As a student, you will be invited to perform in student recitals. You will be joining a team of dedicated, passionate performers who know the pleasure of performing.

As a beginning and intermediate piano instructor, Marty will guide you in the basics of sight reading. If you prefer, your piano classes will consist primarily of improvisation and chord progressions (you will also learn a little bit of sight reading which will help you 'flesh out' the melody). You will gain a solid foundation in music theory as well as an introduction into the vast world of music history. All age ranges are welcome, from the beginning elementary student, to the retiree just now finding the time to pursue their passion to perform.

I have authored a variety of music theory articles to assist you with your progress. We use these in the lessons to speed up your assimilation of the material. You will receive support via this literature and will quickly recognize how music theory supports your efforts with either singing or playing the piano.

*** Lesson Details ***
Your voice is unique to you. How you currently sing and what you want to sing will be the foundation from which we work. We will explore your voice and strengthen it via breath and physical exercises and practice with a repertoire that suits your individual tastes. We will also prepare your mind for quick and fluid articulation of your musical sensitivities.

Music theory and various musical explorations will assist you in moving forward in the most rapid manner possible. Whether you are twelve years old or sixty-five, you will find fun as well as perceptive methods for strengthening your passion for musical performance.

Since your body is your instrument, I am very conscious of the need to assist you in waking your body up in order to perform most successfully. The warm-up exercises include not only traditional vocalizes, but also methods for stretching your body and strengthening your diaphragmatic breathing. My students become very aware of any residual tension in their bodies. Singing is a wonderful way to get in touch with - and expel - any way in which you might 'close down' or 'tense down' your physical body. By working with a caring professional, you will learn how to freely share your unique talent with the world.

As we progress through the series of classes, you will use breathing exercises to activate the thoracic (throat & chest) and visceral (stomach) cavities. Your lessons will continue into specific vocalization exercises; such as singing scales, triads and specific exercises to assist you with fluid musical expression. Traditional ear training will also be a part of the lessons for intermediate students.

Many of the lessons I teach include a theme of working on confidence, vocal projection, breath support, finding and releasing tension, vocal range expansion, audition preparation and stage performance. All singing includes a core of story-telling. You will be encouraged to 'deconstruct' a song and discover the story, along with the emotions that are found in the lyrics of the songs you will sing.

In a similar fashion, my piano students will work on exercises to establish kinesthetic learning or muscle-memory. I have a unique method for sharing chord-progressions and piano improvisation. You will learn to quickly share music in a satisfying and pleasing manner that will surprise you and the people who hear your music. From your unique 'ear,' and via your new-found understanding of music theory, music will pour out of your piano.

As a piano student, you will also be exposed to lessons of the masters who have taught for hundreds of years. Sight-reading at the piano is a very enjoyable skill. Marty has a wonderful energy about her and her teaching style was very helpful to me. We worked on my range, tone, and various techniques to open up and improve the voice which definitely helped! I saw improvements in less than 5 weeks (1 lesson per week) and her personalized booklet helped keep me on track! She's fantastic.

I went to Marty for voice lessons, initially - I had never taken any before, and I wanted to grow in improving my singing voice. I did have about 10 years of instruction in classical piano before my 20's, however, and after a number of voice lessons with Marty, I asked if she would also help me learn more improvisation on the piano (which is something I had only learned a little of in my years of piano lessons). It was a real treat to get to a place where I could both play and sing at the same time with her help - and comfortably! She was so fun to work with, and I really appreciate her perspective on music, and her clear enjoyment of it. Marty helped rekindle a love for music in me that had been pushed aside for awhile, in the midst of my life as a busy mom. To top it off, I found out near the end of our season of lessons together that she is also an excellent calligrapher, and that she offered lessons for that too - which is something else I wanted to learn. She helped get me started with that as well. I would recommend Marty to a friend for any of these three categories of lessons. She is knowledgeable, inspiring, and a lot of fun to learn from! I teach all my students from the Alfred All-In-One Course Books (all levels), A Dozen A Day (Burnam), and Alfred Essentials of Music Theory. I select song pieces from my very extensive personal music library which contains books from all musical history periods and most musical genres. I have been playing piano since I was about 10 years old and personally love to play piano pieces from most genres. I have a Bachelor's in Music Education and have taken all four college level Class Piano Classes as well as private piano lessons as a child and in college.

About Karen
Karen R. was born and raised in a musical family in Lindstrom, Minnesota. Karen has loved to sing and play instruments almost all of her life, and became passionate about music early in her childhood. She has played 7 instruments proficiently including piano, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, ukulele, trombone, recorder, and voice (also an instrument). As a child, Karen took private instruction in piano and classical guitar. She sang and played guitar in her first band in the fifth grade! In high school she played trombone in band, bass guitar in stage band, and sang in the high school choir and stage chorus. In high school, she also sang and played acoustic and bass guitar in a rock band called the 6 pack, who performed for school dances and community events. Karen was also the singer and guitarist, leading the Young Life group. Even though
Karen has had training in many instruments, she has had the most training in voice.

As an adult, Karen has sung extensively in church choirs, women's ensembles, and has been a featured vocal soloist at church services, Christian retreats, and women's ministry events. She was extensively involved in vocal music at Grace Community Christian Church, where she was the singer and guitarist leading and teaching songs to women Bible study groups, preschoolers at vacation Bible school, and Kids Praise Club for elementary aged children. For Kids Praise Club, she also taught the children the choreography for the performances. Presently, Karen is a Choir Director for the K-6 Choristers group at First Presbyterian Church (FPC) in Mesa, AZ., and also taught singing and choreography to the children at VBS at FPC. Karen also had a main roles as Mrs. Paroo in The Music Man in April of 2013, and Mrs. Bucket in Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in April, 2014, The Jailer's Daughter in Wind in the Willows, and Mrs. Brill in Mary Poppins, Mrs. Darling and a Pirate in Peter Pan, performed by the First Players at FPC. Additionally. Karen is presently a substitute elementary school and music teacher at Grace Christian Academy, Bethany Christian School, and teaches General Music K-12 at Young Disciples Christian Academy part-time.

During Karen's college career, she was a voice major at Mesa Community College (MCC) and Grand Canyon University (GCU). At MCC, she performed in the Sun Valley Chorale (SVC) and Cadence women vocal jazz ensemble. SVC performed classical songs at the Mesa Arts Center, and Cadence performed jazz songs for MCC events. Karen was also involved in musical theater at MCC. Karen was an opera singer at Night at the Opera, and a Broadway singer at Broadway Bound, both at MCC. At GCU, Karen has been in the President Singers, Canyon Singers, Canyon Chorale, and Union Choirs. Canyon Singers were the honor students and ambassadors for GCU who traveled locally and out of state to recruit students for GCU. As a voice major, Karen has had 9 semesters (4 ½ years) of private voice instruction under the tuteladge of Dr. Cathy Hauan at MCC, and Dr. Sheila Corley at GCU. Karen has three degrees from GCU: A Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a Minor in Music, a Master's of Education in Reading and Curriculum, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. Music is Karens passion and she desires to teach it to all ages and stages of people. Music is the universal language and creates joy and healing in the soul.

Presently, Karen owns her own home music studio called Starshine School of Music in which she teaches piano, voice, and guitar. I put my focus on inspiring students to explore their own creativity with the tools and techniques that I give to them and nurture.
I think it is very important to cover the basic skills that the school districts expect from their music students (sight reading, proper technique, note recognition, rudiments, timing, feel, etc.).
I also feel it is important for a student to find his or her style and an ability to use the fundamentals to create music that they enjoy.
He has written a method book based on the fundamentals of playing a rhythmic instrument with an emphasis on allowing the student to find their niche and lead a group through a piece of music or tastefully support it.

My studios are fully equipped with sound systems, the latest recording gear, acoustic and electric sets, hand drums and dozens of other percussion instruments. I believe that the more resources a person can draw from, be it intellectual or physical, the more fulfilling the learning experience will be.

Each lesson, my students will take at least a page of music that represents the concept that they are focusing on, and a goal set to accomplish by the end of the week so that they can build upon what they already know in an effort to put the big picture together. Ultimately the student will learn when and how to utilize the concepts that they are practicing.

A Yamaha electronic drum set in my Mesa Studio allows me to control volume and dial up any sound imaginable. I have full acoustic drum sets in other studios that I use for recording and private lessons. Often I will integrate guitar, keyboard, or other instruments in to the lessons if needed.

My 6 yr old son started taking lessons with Ginni about a month ago. He is a very active boy who has difficulty sitting still and focusing. Ginni is wonderful with him! She is very patient, kind, and understanding of children's specific challenges. She works with him while gently nudging him to stay on task. He actually really likes going to piano lessons and is always excited when 'piano day' rolls around. So hats off to Ginni for her skills in making learning music fun and enjoyable to an active little boy! I always wanted my son to learn an instrument (we are a family of musicians) but what I didn't realize is the process learning piano is helping him with needed skills in school: concentration, focus and discipline. I am very happy I chose Ginni.

Music has been my passion for the past 18 years. I started piano when I was 5 yrs old and the violin when I was 7 yrs old. I continued with lessons until I entered the Detroit High School for Performing Arts. During my sophomore year, I took additional classes at Wayne Sate University for music theory and in my senior year I took on my first piano students. I have been teaching piano, violin and music theory ever since. I have also choreographed and taught dance for many years as dancing has been with me since my first lessons at 4 yrs old. My focus is in ballet, tap and jazz. I am a graduate from Eastern Michigan University where I was actively a part of the music and dance program.

dents to work, and learn. I introduce learning games and have contests. I also regularly quiz my students. At the present time, I am just teaching Beginning Piano. I have been playing piano for over 20 years, but have recently put it on hold to concentrate on mastering my violin skills. I have taught one student in the past for a short period of time. She was doing well but had to quit for financial reasons.

My playing experience includes playing in two piano recitals in San Diego, CA where there were over 50 pianos on a large stage and we played music with partners. That was a lot of fun. I have also accompanied a fashion show which was fun too. I completed four semester of piano at a Jr. College and tested out of piano in a 4-year college, but I mostly play for my enjoyment and relaxation.

I have been teaching students on a regular basis since receiving my Violin Performance Degree in 2008, but have taught several students on and off for over 20 years. I have played in orchestras since Jr. High, including 2 paid symphonies in Louisiana. I am presently playing with a local symphony.

I believe that any student will practice more if he or she likes the music they are playing. Periodically I will ask a student to give me a name of a piece of music that they would like to learn how to play. I notate it for them, often simplifying the rhythm and chords in Finale NotePad and give it to them free of charge. I teach students how to play music on their given instrument. Not just how to play the instrument but working on technique, finger dexterity, expert note reading ability and total musicianship. How to play a piece of music that will move the audience emotionally. I stress vocabulary and music history and theory as part of being a well-trained musician.

In my opinion, having been an educator in the Isaac School District for many years, Mr. Quintana exhibits excellent teaching techniques and strategies to enable the learner to be successful. He is professional, prepared, courteous, and prompt. For the past 6 years, Mr.Quintana has been my cello instructor. The environment that he creates as an educator provides an excellent foundation for continued learning. Mr. Quintana's knowledge of string instruments and piano are superb.

Victor is a great instructor and a great person. He is wonderful with my young son, who was an absolute beginner when he started lesson with Victor at age 8. My son has a learning disability that makes it harder for him to read music and process instructions. Victor worked with all of that with patience and respect. Now my son can play beautiful songs and perform in front of others. I believe that learning music has also helped my son become better at reading, math, and thinking! Most of all, he feels successful about his guitar skills, which adds to his confidence. I cannot thank Victor enough!

Watching a student learn and grow is more rewarding than anything else.

Furthermore, Music is beneficial! No one thing is better than music for child's development and or for stimulating your own brain. Studies show that it can even help stave off dementia and other results of aging. Why? Music is the only activity that we do that uses All areas of the brain at once. Music increases IQ (in children), improves intuitive math and reading skills, raises test scores and the ability to focus and more. Furthermore, Students who study music are also more likely to
graduate, go to College and to be accepted at demanding schools like law and medicine. Music is a great way to maintain your mental skills and flexibility, explore different times, cultures and styles.

I AM A:
- An experienced teacher (since 1983) with typically up to 55 private lessons weekly.
- An experienced and successful teacher in working with a wide range of disabilities.
- Professional Pianist (since 1981).
- Nationally Certified Piano Teacher with MTNA.
- Certified teacher in all levels of Kindermusik (14 years).
- Certified teacher of Orff-Schuelwerk (2004).
- Experienced teacher in working with a wide variety of disabilities.
- Teacher (was) for the pioneering studies on music and brain development at UC Irvine.
- Founder of the Empire Music Teachers Association.
- Was District IV Coordinator for the California MTA (5 years).

WHAT IS A TYPICAL LESSON LIKE?
- Arrive and get your things out
- Warm-ups: trills, scales, 5 finger patterns, thirds, octaves, etc.
- Did you have trouble on your assignments this week? If so, we'll go directly to that.
- Demonstration of all pieces while working on any problems
- Assignment and demonstration, practice and special directions for each piece.
- Theory check and new assignment. Complete as needed.
- As time permits, review of flashcards, ear training and so forth.
- Music Lab (either before or after the lesson as fits in with the students around you) - 15-20 minutes of independent study: musical computer games to support what we are working on, read books about music, composers, music history and so forth, listen to music as supports what we are working on, complete any missed theory assignments, review of flashcards if needed.

WHO AM I?
I am Karen. I love Music! My family has always incorporated music into our lives. Some of my earliest memories are being danced around in my Mom’s arms and listening to her sing. I began formal lessons on the Piano when I was 7 years old. Growing up also I sang in the Church Choirs, played on Hand Bells, and explored the Flute. I spent a formal year each on Trumpet, Drums and Harpsichord and am currently working on learning Zither, Autoharp, Dulcimer, and Soprano & Alto Recorders, and sometimes the guitar (when I have a chance). Of course, I also regularly read and attend lectures, conferences, seminars and master classes to always improve my teaching skills. I have been teaching piano and music theory for over 31 years in this area and have played professionally. I am a member in good standing with the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), and was with the California Association of Music Teachers (CAPMT), Empire Music Teachers Association (EMTA), the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), the Suzuki Association of North America, the National & the Inland Empire Kodaly-Orff Association, and the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy – I have not hooked up here yet. I am a fully certified and licensed teacher of Kindermusik and Musikgarten and have earned National Certification (NCTM) through the MTNA and have earned Level I & II (out of 3) in Orff-Scheulwerk. I was District IV Coordinator for CAPMT, and Vice President then President of the EMTA. I keep busy and love teaching!

Supplementary books are available: holiday, religious, popular, classical, music from specific times, places, composers, movies... or whatever the student wishes, when they are ready. My personal goal is not to have a studio full of competition performers. A few are always nice of course, but the average student just wants to be able to make music - to make it sing. I DO want them to understand, appreciate, and be able to pick up something and figure it out - or apply what they know to another instrument. Once music is part of a life, it never leaves; it is the one universal language.

My child has been seeing Karen for a while and has really grown in her abilities. Karen is very welcoming, flexible and a joy to work with. If you ever have issues she is always willing to work with you. I would highly recommend her for lessons!

I have been seeing Karen for a couple of years and have to say that of all the instructors I have had, she is the best and most professional. She always has a smile and has always been very flexible with me. She had not minded changing times when issues come up. The recitals are great and she gives students extra assistance with group lessons. When there are events in the community that can help with music skills, she always lets me know. I would highly recommend Karen as your family instructor. The price is reasonable as well.

This subject is for children and adults at the beginning stages of learning to play the piano. Students will learn the fundamentals of playing--everything from correct posture, reading by note, music theory, and performance preparation!
