EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
I've been studying voice for 12 years and teaching for the past 7. I received my Masters of Music degree in voice performance from the Chicago College of Performing Arts and my B.M. from UCF. Since graduating in 2013, I have sung with throughout the Chicago area and recently moved to Seattle. Some performance highlights include but are not limited to performing with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Sinfonietta, and in CCPA's production of the Chicago Premier of Daron Hagen's Amelia, and performing with the Grant Park Chorus.

I've been a professional singer for over 25 years, and as I'm aging, my changing body needs to be retrained in a few areas. Clarice is a wonderful find of a teacher and coach. She helped me to prepare for a Mahler audition that was out of my comfort zone (I've mostly done Baroque repertoire, and Mahler sounds so much better when you're 50). She helped me to really get in touch with my core breathing, and to sing a legato line like you never get in early music. She also gave really good coaching advice on things like color and brightness of tone, with thoughts of making it cut through a thick texture. I really liked the advice "pp is a color, not a volume." I have yet to hear about my audition results, but unlike many, I felt really good about how I sang. I'm looking forward to more lessons with Clarice so that I can keep on singing healthily for the next 20 years into my 70s.

I have been teaching French Horn, piano and composition privately for about nine years, mainly in Snohomish and King counties. I have also coached horn players in local school bands during this time, as well as helping students with learning disabilities. There are many difficulties that students encounter when studying music, and I want to help you turn weaknesses into strengths, and help you find out where your greatest strengths (and interests) lie in music. I'll work with you to help you understand your own musical desires and goals, so that you can get the most out of your lessons. I am committed to understanding each of my students, and to sharing my love of music with each one of them. I teach French Horn, piano, music theory and composition as well as songwriting. I was eight years old when I started taking piano lessons in Tacoma, WA. When I was 12, I discovered that I had perfect pitch while playing church hymns with my dad. This ability has served me well on a number of occasions. I discontinued formal piano lessons when I started college, but I continued to play piano on a nearly daily basis from that point on, keeping my technical skills at a very advanced level. I played trumpet in school bands starting in the 5th grade, and switched to French Horn in the 8th grade. The appeal of the horn may have had something to do with its rich, warm sound, its intricacy and complexity, and the demands that it placed on me to play with a high degree of pitch accuracy. I loved the challenge of playing accurately on the horn then, and I still do. As a horn student, I have studied with Jacqueline Shannon, Kathy Farner, Kathy Colton, Lawrence Lowe, Elizabeth Ward, Jeff Snedeker, Rodger Burnett and Stacie Eliason. As a horn performer, I have played with community and regional professional orchestras in the Seattle area, Central Washington, Olympia, in the Tacoma Youth Symphony, and in numerous ensembles in college.

I have studied music at Tacoma Community College, Brigham Young University and Central Washington University. I received Bachelor of Arts in Music at Central Washington University. I plan on attending graduate school in the future, focusing on music composition and film composition, as well as French Horn and piano performance.

As a music composer, I have written works for many different ensembles, choral works, solo piano pieces, and works for solo instruments. I am drawn to rich harmonies and beautiful melodies, as well as interesting timbres and musical variety, in my own music and that of the music I listen to. I am easily able to visualize music in color, and I have a thorough understanding of how the elements of music combine together to affect emotions in listeners. This is one of the reasons that I am currently pursuing film and media composition.

As a student, teacher, performer and music composer, I know that there are countless musical topics that students are curious about. I feel that students should feel free to ask any question in the field of music, even if it may seem like a "dumb" question. I value the sincerity and passion for good music that so many students have. I will help you acquire the knowledge and skills that you need, so that you can see more clearly your own musical goals. Previous and current students I have, each have made improvements in their own playing and knowledge of music, some of whom have made vast improvements in their playing and knowledge of music.

As I have taught music privately for a little while now, and can reasonably compare how I teach with other instructors that I know well, I can say with certainty that there are at least a few areas of my teaching that are somewhat unique and highly beneficial for certain students, if not most students. I value ear training and using flashcards with beginner students quite a bit, and am fond of teaching not only the "nuts and bolts" of music, but also, how music "works", such that a student of mine can write their own music if they have the desire to do so. I also try to assign a wide variety of music for each student (which differs according to each student's musical interests, abilities, and areas of their playing that need to be improved), especially as they improve and approach the intermediate levels of playing. There are many reasons I do this, but for the student, it is very important that they do not feel particularly "bored" with the music they are playing. I also have found that students who have a more sensitive nature tend to be more comfortable with the way I teach, as I reserve higher, stricter expectations for more advanced, older students. I also try to always be as patient, kind, and considerate with every student as I can be. Lastly, I highly encourage questions and feedback at any time during a lesson, and I try to create an atmosphere where the student feels comfortable to do so.

I accept students from five years old on up, but I prefer horn students to be at least ten years old before starting lessons, unless they have noticeably greater abilities to focus for a certain period of time than other children their age.

*** Lesson Details ***
I have always wanted people I interact with to be, as a general rule, comfortable and relaxed in any setting. This certainly applies to the students I teach. However, students can expect that musical improvement will only occur through daily practice and constant effort. That being said, I am more interested in helping students overcome any difficulties in this area through reviewing their own practice habits and motivations, rather than using harsh discipline. It is crucial that students see the connection between their own practicing and musical improvement. Once this occurs, they can take more responsibility for their own progress with that added awareness.

The material chosen for each student will vary considerably, depending on their current knowledge, experience and ability level, innate abilities, musical tastes and priorities. The progress that is made will, to a large extent, be determined by the student's practice habits and natural ability. However, over the course of a few months or so, students should see noticeable improvement in their own musical abilities, if they practice and pay attention during lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
-French Horn: pencil, mute, tuner/metronome, maintenance/cleaning supplies, some books depending on if it is a first lesson, etc. I bring my own horn, and expect the student to have their horn. I also expect them to have a music journal to use as a reference for practicing and keeping track of their progress. Occasionally, I will employ a recording device for the purpose of assessing personal teaching effectiveness, or for the student to evaluate their progress/record their practicing.

Regarding method of instruction/teaching style, I am student oriented, and tend to adapt to each student's personality and learning style. I prefer using the Bastian, Alfred, and/or John Thompson piano methods, and Pottag-Hovey, Maxime-Alphonse books, etc. for French Horn.

Ben is great if you want your child to love piano. He is a fun teacher and was very patient with my son, who was a bit turned off from music due to prior experiences. He actually wrote songs for my son to play since he needed more time at the beginner level. He was great when my son was nervous at recitals and festivals and had strategies to help him deal with nerves.

My name is Ray and I teach piano and organ. I started teaching with Take Lessons in 2012 when I moved to Austin, Texas. Before that, I lived in California where I directed music at churches for over 10 years, served as pianist and organist, and conducted several choirs and music groups. I also started teaching private piano lessons after graduating from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California with a degree in Music Education.

My beginning piano students can expect to learn how to read music, use their fingers on the keys correctly, and play several songs or pieces in 3 to 4 months. I use piano method material primarily from the Faber Piano Adventures series, but use other methods as well.
My organ students can expect to learn basic keyboard skills as in learning piano, learn how to play the pedal board--a big and exciting part about the organ!--and also specific organ techniques and gain the appreciation for the difference the organ is.
I believe that I am an enthusiastic teacher, gently encouraging, but firm and persistent as well. I want you to be excited about music, but I also want you to learn what you need to be able to make that music!

My 15 year old son, who has some experience with music through orchestra at school, began playing the piano on his own about two years ago. Although he has some skill, there are many areas where he still needs help. Ray is an excellent judge of Jack's ability and is able to guide him in fingering, sight reading and reading base clef. My son has found Ray very helpful because he picks up on what he needs and knows how to explain what to do to improve. He is learning something new with each lesson. Besides being knowledgeable, skilled and patient, Ray is also very personable! My son looks forward to his lesson each week!

Music is a tool for spiritual progress of every human being.

I started Piano when I was 8 years old. My siblings were taking lessons at that time and hearing them play it made me fall in love with Piano, therefore, my parents had me get started in taking lessons as well. I have been playing Piano for about 15 years now and it started to become part of my everyday life. I have had four different teachers for piano and they were all amazing teachers. One of my private piano teachers was a student of Iran’s most popular pianist and composer, Emanuel Malek Aslanian. I also had an amazing Piano instructor back in Iran who made me become an expert in techniques as well as enjoying the melodies. I mainly play and teach Classical music. Beethoven and Mozart are my favorite composers and I enjoy playing their pieces very much.
I have been te
aching piano for about 4 years now and it is very joyful. I love communicating with my students and do my best to help them discover their talents and interest. I want the students to enjoy what they learn and play.

I also have a BS in Biological Sciences from University of California, Irvine. Biology also taught me how Music has such great influences on human body and soul. It relaxes people and help them get through difficulties. Being a Bio students and teaching Piano at the same time was the best thing that ever happened to me, that's why I really want everyone to experience music in their lives and get touched by it.

One of the most important tools in my teaching is to get to know my students well. I try to maintain a really close friendship with my students. I want to know what type of music/style my students are interested in and make sure I bring out their talents and teach them the necessary techniques as well. It was awful. She never showed up after almost $300.000. The first 2 weeks she made excuses. The third week she just didn't bother. We want our money back. This is a scam, and very disappointed. We got a keyboard for our daughter for Christmas to learn piano. She hasn't been able to use her nice Yamaha weighted piano keyboard yet. Shameful

I have studied with some of the finest trombonists in the world, performed in the nation's top orchestras, and am firmly committed to excellence in the trombone field. Music is one of the most indescribably powerful and moving things in the entire world, and I want students to, above all, simply enjoy playing and experiencing this gift. The trombone is, of course, merely a means to an end in this regard; yet its rich, powerful, as well as versatile sound is what particularly draws me to it. My approach to playing the trombone is simple: producing the greatest sound on every note, as easily as possible. I think it is necessary to have the best sound that you can possibly make on the trombone in your head from day one, and to this end, I strive to play as much as possible for and along with the student so that they may develop their own ide
al sound concept. I couple this with instruction on all the other fundamentals of trombone playing and music making, such as technique, scales, rhythms, intonation, breathing, etc. But never forget that the ultimate goal is to perform the music the way it goes and to simply sing through the instrument. By this I do not not necessarily mean playing all the correct notes, but instead performing the music in the correct style and context as the composer intended, and always playing musical lines. Remember that music is to be shared with others, and that making a statement with the music we play, in a way expressing our deepest emotions, is what this is all about!

My son needed some extra help with trombone. He was struggling in his school program and wanted to be better. After studying with Grant for a few months, his band teacher sent me an email about how quickly he is improving and he moved up from last chair to third chair. He is very approchable and my son loves him.

Grant is an amazing musician. From the 2 years I’ve worked with him, he’s been very professional, great to work with and always plays with a beautiful tone. He is very passionate and knowledgable in both playing the trombone and the music he plays.

About Greg
Hello! I am a vocal music teacher with over 15 years of experience in singing and performing. I received my BA in music (voice) from the University of Washington in 2012, and my MA in teaching (with a choral endorsement) from the University of Puget Sound in 2016. I currently teach music at Seattle World School, where I focus on singing, vocal technique, and music theory.

I have studied and been trained in multiple genres, and I can assist students in using healthy vocal technique for any style of music. While much of my performing experience has been in Classical singing, I have also performed Pop music, and I have performed with multiple a cappella groups. Greg's a very good teacher. At first I wasn't sure how all the vocal exercises and breathing that we were doing were fitting together, but by the 5th lesson, I could see my singing improve significantly. Greg has a lot of experience, but doesn't try to overwhelm you or do things that are unnecessary. He works on what he thinks you're capable doing, but also guides you past your comfort zone a little bit each lesson as well. Recommended.
