I'm a professional composer, teacher, and pianist - and I like to keep active doing all three throughout my community. On July 31, 2013 TakeLessons featured me on Seattle King 5's morning TV news program - I taught a miniature lesson and discussed the impact of piano lessons on the brain. My piano and composition lessons are very in-depth, but also very flexible. Because of my thorough knowledge and experience with music, I can teach all ages, skill levels, and an array of important subjects - including piano, ear-training, music theory, improvisation, composition, creativity, music history, ethnomusicology, and percussion. I cater to each student's interests as well as incorporate many of these subjects into my piano lessons so that every student gains a thorough understanding of music and becomes a well-rounded musician.

I started ta
king Suzuki piano lessons when I was 5 and quickly fell in love with the piano. Since the Suzuki method incorporates such thorough ear-training and the ability to play without sheet music, I quickly began to explore my creative side and was improvising on the piano by age 7. Naturally, this led to composition! Music was flowing through me, and I was able to both improvise and compose my inspirations on the piano. I entered and placed in the Reflections state composition contest each year. Throughout my youth, I was also very involved with the band (played trumpet), dance, drama and attended many symphonies, ballets, plays and operas - giving me a well-rounded artistic upbringing.

I pursued my passion and earned a Bachelor's degree in music composition from Mills College, followed by a Master's degree in music composition from the renowned California Institute of the Arts. My thorough education has taught me to compose for any instrument or ensemble as well as compose for film, dance, and theater. It has also taught me to understand the piano in-depth, along with theory and ear-training. Since graduating in 2006, I have scored several films, received commissions to compose for ensembles and musicians, and taught both composition and piano lessons. I also created an ensemble named SIRËoNa that I composed for, managed, and performed piano, percussion, and indigenous flutes in, and I was interviewed and featured on NPR along with local radio stations and newspapers. I have produced two CD's. Most recently, I composed a score for a silent film, premiering live with the Seattle Jazz Ensemble as part of the moisture festival in Seattle.

*** Lesson Details ***
When teaching piano, I take a similar approach to the Suzuki method. But instead of teaching from the Suzuki books, I teach my own composed exercises and pieces that I believe are more fun and accessible to today's student of any age! I create MP3 recordings of each exercise and have students listen to and memorize the exercises in their own time.This is a very important aspect of my lessons that thoroughly develops the ear - giving the student the ability to play the exercise from memory and to deeply understand the connection between their actions and the resulting sound.

I develop my exercises to progress each student through an increasing degree of technique difficulty and musical parameters - such as rhythm, melody, chords, harmony, key and range. Beginning exercises will isolate a specific musical parameter to bring thorough understanding of its possibilities, while advanced exercises and pieces will work on coordinating multiple parameters and techniques at the same time. Within 6 months, a beginner piano student will have tackled and perfected simple yet fun exercises that incorporate each major musical parameter, as well as develop correct posture and finger technique, and have developed some ear training and basic music theory skills. I also have my students do creative exercises, which develop more thorough ear training and the ability to eventually improvise and compose on the piano. More advanced piano students will perfect their ability to interpret and express each piece of music that they play and will receive thorough ear training, music theory lessons, and develop their creative abilities through piano improvisation and composition. Once they have tackled the fundamentals, intermediate and advanced piano students will learn the classics as well.

Along with piano lessons, I'm also highly qualified to teach music composition - including beginning to advanced composition, music theory, composing for any instrument or ensemble, Sibelius computer notation program, film scoring, and orchestration.

Terri is very nice with my boys, especially patient with my younger son Jon who has just learnt Piano for about half-one year. Terri taught the intro music theory, how to train ears and finger skills, which Jon really enjoys. And Terri kindly email us music sheet and practice recordings after every lession, which are very helpful for kids to practice. Although we have to change schedule, we miss her!

I have been teaching French Horn, piano and composition privately for about nine years, mainly in Snohomish and King counties. I have also coached horn players in local school bands during this time, as well as helping students with learning disabilities. There are many difficulties that students encounter when studying music, and I want to help you turn weaknesses into strengths, and help you find out where your greatest strengths (and interests) lie in music. I was eight years old when I started taking piano lessons in Tacoma, WA. When I was 12, I discovered that I had perfect pitch while playing church hymns with my dad. This ability has served me well on a number of occasions. I discontinued formal piano lessons when I started college, but I continued to play piano on a nearly daily basis from that point on, keeping my technical skills at a very advanced level. I played trumpet in school bands starting in the 5th grade, and switched to French Horn in the 8th grade. The appeal of the horn may have had something to do with its rich, warm sound, its intricacy and complexity, and the demands that it placed on me to play with a high degree of pitch accuracy. I loved the challenge of playing accurately on the horn then, and I still do. As a horn student, I have studied with Jacqueline Shannon, Kathy Farner, Kathy Colton, Lawrence Lowe, Elizabeth Ward, Jeff Snedeker, Rodger Burnett and Stacie Eliason. As a horn performer, I have played with community and regional professional orchestras in the Seattle area, Central Washington, Olympia, in the Tacoma Youth Symphony, and in numerous ensembles in college.

I have studied music at Tacoma Community College, Brigham Young University and Central Washington University. I received Bachelor of Arts in Music at Central Washington University. I plan on attending graduate school in the future, focusing on music composition and film composition, as well as French Horn and piano performance.

As a music composer, I have written works for many different ensembles, choral works, solo piano pieces, and works for solo instruments. I am drawn to rich harmonies and beautiful melodies, as well as interesting timbres and musical variety, in my own music and that of the music I listen to. I am easily able to visualize music in color, and I have a thorough understanding of how the elements of music combine together to affect emotions in listeners. This is one of the reasons that I am currently pursuing film and media composition.

As a student, teacher, performer and music composer, I know that there are countless musical topics that students are curious about. I feel that students should feel free to ask any question in the field of music, even if it may seem like a "dumb" question. I value the sincerity and passion for good music that so many students have. I will help you acquire the knowledge and skills that you need, so that you can see more clearly your own musical goals. Previous and current students I have, each have made improvements in their own playing and knowledge of music, some of whom have made vast improvements in their playing and knowledge of music.

As I have taught music privately for a little while now, and can reasonably compare how I teach with other instructors that I know well, I can say with certainty that there are at least a few areas of my teaching that are somewhat unique and highly beneficial for certain students, if not most students. I value ear training and using flashcards with beginner students quite a bit, and am fond of teaching not only the "nuts and bolts" of music, but also, how music "works", such that a student of mine can write their own music if they have the desire to do so. I also try to assign a wide variety of music for each student (which differs according to each student's musical interests, abilities, and areas of their playing that need to be improved), especially as they improve and approach the intermediate levels of playing. There are many reasons I do this, but for the student, it is very important that they do not feel particularly "bored" with the music they are playing. I also have found that students who have a more sensitive nature tend to be more comfortable with the way I teach, as I reserve higher, stricter expectations for more advanced, older students. I also try to always be as patient, kind, and considerate with every student as I can be. Lastly, I highly encourage questions and feedback at any time during a lesson, and I try to create an atmosphere where the student feels comfortable to do so.

I accept students from five years old on up, but I prefer horn students to be at least ten years old before starting lessons, unless they have noticeably greater abilities to focus for a certain period of time than other children their age.

*** Lesson Details ***
I have always wanted people I interact with to be, as a general rule, comfortable and relaxed in any setting. This certainly applies to the students I teach. However, students can expect that musical improvement will only occur through daily practice and constant effort. That being said, I am more interested in helping students overcome any difficulties in this area through reviewing their own practice habits and motivations, rather than using harsh discipline. It is crucial that students see the connection between their own practicing and musical improvement. Once this occurs, they can take more responsibility for their own progress with that added awareness.

The material chosen for each student will vary considerably, depending on their current knowledge, experience and ability level, innate abilities, musical tastes and priorities. The progress that is made will, to a large extent, be determined by the student's practice habits and natural ability. However, over the course of a few months or so, students should see noticeable improvement in their own musical abilities, if they practice and pay attention during lessons.

-French Horn: pencil, mute, tuner/metronome, maintenance/cleaning supplies, some books depending on if it is a first lesson, etc. I bring my own horn, and expect the student to have their horn. Occasionally, I will employ a recording device for the purpose of assessing personal teaching effectiveness, or for the student to evaluate their progress/record their practicing.

Ben is great if you want your child to love piano. He is a fun teacher and was very patient with my son, who was a bit turned off from music due to prior experiences. He actually wrote songs for my son to play since he needed more time at the beginner level. He was great when my son was nervous at recitals and festivals and had strategies to help him deal with nerves.

My name is Ray and I teach piano and organ. I started teaching with Take Lessons in 2012 when I moved to Austin, Texas. Before that, I lived in California where I directed music at churches for over 10 years, served as pianist and organist, and conducted several choirs and music groups. I also started teaching private piano lessons after graduating from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California with a degree in Music Education.
I now live in Snohomish, Washington with my husband Dan, and son Galvin. We are (still) enjoying the lush green and cooler weather of the PNW!
I consider myself an organist, before pianist, because the organ is my first love! The organ is so similar to the piano, yet it is vastly different and comes with it its own unique excitement! As a teacher, I enjoy watching young musicians discover their
abilities. I look forward to helping you get excited about the piano or organ and making music!

My beginning piano students can expect to learn how to read music, use their fingers on the keys correctly, and play several songs or pieces in 3 to 4 months. I use piano method material primarily from the Faber Piano Adventures series, but use other methods as well.
My organ students can expect to learn basic keyboard skills as in learning piano, learn how to play the pedal board--a big and exciting part about the organ!--and also specific organ techniques and gain the appreciation for the difference the organ is.
I believe that I am an enthusiastic teacher, gently encouraging, but firm and persistent as well. I want you to be excited about music, but I also want you to learn what you need to be able to make that music!

I don't have equipment, but I expect the student to have a piano at home. In the past when I have taught organ, I could teach at a church, or at my home, but I don't have an organ in my home (in Snohomish) anymore. We would have to make arrangements with a facility with an organ.

My 15 year old son, who has some experience with music through orchestra at school, began playing the piano on his own about two years ago. Although he has some skill, there are many areas where he still needs help. Ray is an excellent judge of Jack's ability and is able to guide him in fingering, sight reading and reading base clef. My son has found Ray very helpful because he picks up on what he needs and knows how to explain what to do to improve. He is learning something new with each lesson. Besides being knowledgeable, skilled and patient, Ray is also very personable! My son looks forward to his lesson each week!

Dr. Kaley Lane Eaton is a composer and soprano currently based in Seattle, WA. Her work has been performed across the US and internationally, in venues ranging from Hong Kong concert halls, to the streets of Skid Row in Los Angeles. Eaton's work crosses genre boundaries, exploring how the voice, body, and unconscious world of the performer can provide musical narratives through live digital processing, machine listening, sensors, and improvisation. Her "startling," "intriguing," "fresh," and "thoughtful" compositions are quickly gaining notoriety for combining innovative digital technology with ancient performance practices.

In addition to frequently performing her own work in bars, concert halls, living rooms, and (hopefully, someday) the lobbies of Seattle's new and overpriced luxury condo buildings, she is an avid cross-disciplinary
collaborator. Recent collaborations include Karin Stevens Dance, Mazumal (cellist Olivia J.P. Harris and soprano Felicia Chen), flutist Leanna Keith, forty/sixty, Strange Interlude, violist Heather Bentley, and saxophonist Steve Treseler. She has been awarded residencies at the Atlantic Center for the Arts (2017 associate artist with master artist Derek Bermel) and the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences (2017) where she was awarded the distinguished Holland and Knight Fellowship. Her electroacoustic opera lily [bloom in my darkness], featuring an original libretto by Canadian author felicia klingenberg and choreography by Karin Stevens, premiered in June 2017 with the support of 4Culture's Tech Specific Grant Program. lily is also the recipient of the 2017 International Alliance for Women In Music's Pauline Oliveros New Genre prize for works exploring electroacoustic media and innovative form and style. It will be produced again in Fall 2018 with Karin Stevens Dance and the Universal Language Project alongside her new work LUNG for 6 loudspeakers, interactive electronics, dancers and large ensemble.

With flutist Leanna Keith, Eaton is co-founder of Stack Effect, a flute and voice duo. Also with Keith and violist Heather Bentley, Eaton co-directs Kin of the Moon, an improvisation-centric and technology-friendly chamber music series in Seattle. Both Stack Effect and Kin of the Moon have enjoyed recent features at new music festivals such as Oh My Ears! in Phoenix, NUMUS NW in Seattle, and the National Flute Association Convention.

As a writer with particular interest in the role of musical composition's relationship to our larger culture, Eaton has been published by KING FM's Second Inversion ("Women, Creativity, and the Classroom" (2016) and "Reflections on Wilderness" (2017)) and Common Tone Arts ("Things I wish I had known when I thought I couldn't be a composer" (2017)).

Eaton holds a DMA in composition from the University of Washington and teaches at Seattle Pacific University.

Great piano and voice teacher

Ms. E combined talents as an accomplished pianist and singer were a blessing for our daughter. Under her tutelage she has blossomed into a lovely musician. When she decided to take on voice as well Ms.E skillfully guided her and wisely allowed her to choose music she loved.

We miss her energy and unique abilities as a teacher to inspire a love of music. Her weekly visits were always met with great anticipation and left our daughter singing up the stairs.

I love playing drums, and I love teaching others how to play drums. As a recent graduate from the University of Washington's acclaimed jazz program as well as an alumnus of the prestigious Roosevelt High School Jazz Band, I am a professional drummer and teacher with an extensive and unique set of experiences. Since middle school, I have been lucky enough to perform and tour all over the US and Europe, playing everything from house shows to esteemed competitions and festivals. In addition to being a member of several active local projects, I have performed with the Seattle Symphony; UW faculty members Bill Frisell, Cuong Vu, Luke Bergman, Ted Poor, and Marc Seales; several Cornish faculty members including Jim Knapp, Jovino Santos Neto, and Wayne Horvitz; and celebrated NYC-based players Wynton Marsalis, Tim Berne, Ralph Alessi, and Andrew
D'Angelo. Aside from that, I am a co-founder of Table & Chairs, a new Seattle-based record label, as well as a co-founder of the Racer Sessions, a weekly forum and performance outlet for new and improvised music.

I began teaching in 2008, shortly after beginning my studies at the University of Washington. My private students have ranged from total beginners to advanced, each one presenting a unique set of interests and abilities to work with. In addition to teaching my own students, I have much experience as a substitute percussion teacher at Northshore Junior High School (Kingsgate, WA) and Spotlight Studios (Woodinville, WA). I have also presented many clinics and workshops at local schools including Garfield High School, Edmonds-Woodway High School, Ballard High School, Eckstein Middle School, and Holy Names Academy, as well as for Seattle JazzED. For these, the topics covered have ranged from free improvisation to straight-ahead and big band jazz.

*** Lesson Details ***
For beginning players, I like to start with the books "A Fresh Approach to the Snare Drum" and "A Fresh Approach to the Drum Set," both by Mark Wessels. These books do a great job of laying down the fundamentals that all drummers should learn at the outset of their education. Beyond that, what I teach depends largely on any specific path(s) the student may wish to pursue, though of course it is totally fine if the student doesn't immediately know what they would like to study beyond the basics. In that case, I would do my best to construct a rough curriculum that I think would work well for the student. The following books are all ones I have worked with and have found to be excellent at improving unique things: "Syncopation" (Ted Reed), "Stick Control" (G.L. Stone), "The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary As Taught By Alan Dawson" (John Ramsay), "Patterns" (Gary Chaffee), and "Portraits in Rhythm" (Anthony Cirone).

I prefer lessons to be focused on a curriculum, however customized it may be, as I have found that approach to be the most efficient, especially with younger players. While I believe that it is very important to learn the fundamentals of drumming, I also believe that some of the most rewarding experiences a student can have may be achieved through realizing their own unique creative potential. Thus, I find it great to set the curriculum aside for part of the lesson, either to allow the student some time to show me what else they've been working on, listening to, watching, thinking about, or perhaps to just jam and have fun. I also expect students to make progress on their own between lessons, though I understand fully from my teaching experience that the amount of progress I can expect is different for each student.

About Jared
I have been playing instruments and performing live since I was 11 years old. Initially trained in classical piano I added guitar to my musical palette at the age of 14. In college I spent time continuing my studies in both piano and guitar and received a bachelors of fine arts with a concentration in jazz guitar from Columbia College Chicago in 2004.

I have since moved to Seattle, WA and have become a regular fixture in the music community as a guitar and theory teacher, songwriter/guitarist of the pop rock bands Electric NoNo and Warren Dunes, and co founder and producer of the The Big Ass Boom Box Festival Seattle and the Seattle X Southwest showcase at SXSW Festival in Austin. I have released five studio albums that have received regional and national attention, toured regionally and nationally, and perform regularly at Seattle ma
instays including The Crocodile, The Sunset, Columbia City Theater, and many more. My band recently performed at The Upstream Music Festival in downtown Seattle in March 2017.

I consider myself a life long student of music and I pride myself on my dedication to a complete understanding of my instrument. I offer beginner - advanced lessons for guitar and songwriting, and beginner - intermediate lessons for ukulele. I also administer a variety of workshops throughout the year for guitar, songwriting, and music theory, as well as bi annual student recitals.

I am so impressed with Jared’s ability to teach me in a way I wanted to learn. I am probably the most difficult student Jared ever had. I wasn’t particularly interested in strumming. I just wanted to play in a way that the songs would be recognized without any accompaniment. I was also very specific about the pieces I wanted to learn. Jared was always so patient with me and I suspect he spent a great deal of time outside of class figuring everything out for me.

I had been playing for 25+ years and wanted to learn some applied theory and some jazz. I made a great decision choosing Jared. I took lessons from Jared for 3 years, it was a great experience!

A few key things about Jared I want to share:
- He is always prepared and does his homework
- Incredibly knowledgably and patient
- He finds a way to explain things so they make sense
- Always goes above and beyond what I expected
- He provides materials to aid in learning from videos, backing tracks, tablature and musical notation
- Always smiling and happy to be teaching music

I easily recommend Jared as a teacher to players looking to learn music from beginner though to advanced level. It was an absolute pleasure to be Jared’s student.

Jared is patient, encouraging, extremely knowledgable, and the perfect teacher for me. I had learned some chords from Youtube but Jared's style of teaching is to not only teach what you need to know now, but set up for later stages of guitar playing.
Jared breaks down songs into pieces, and provides a slowed down recording to play along with. I find this the absolute best part about practicing, to play along with Jared's recording. It also means if I haven't played a song for a while I can go back to the recording for the strum/structure.
Without Jared I don't think I would have stuck with the guitar, and after almost 18 months Jared is encouraging me to explore the electric guitar and take the lessons in a new direction.
There are regular performances with all the students, it's no pressure, and I haven't had one go perfectly yet while on the actual stage (in practice they are perfect) but they give students an opportunity to perform in an environment where they can make mistakes and just get out there and try it!

I would strongly recommend Jared as a guitar teacher - the recordings, the encouragement, the performances, he is a very dedicated teacher.

About Laleh
I have been teaching piano for more than 20 years, have played in multiple concerts, and have had the pleasure of teaching many talented students. What I do want to tell you is what I love about teaching piano and how I work with my students.

What gets me excited is when my student and I have been working on a piece for couple of weeks and after putting the right effort we start to see results. The fluid movement of the hands, picking up the tempo of the piece, and steadily following through the melody are all part of these results.

This is always the case whether we're playing Twinkle Twinkle with one of my beginner and younger students or diving into Beethoven's For Elise with some of my more advanced students. It is really energizing to see and be part of this progress and improvement. That's what I enjoy the most from teaching
piano.

I keep my classes relaxed and fun, we laugh and enjoy ourselves, but when it comes to practice and learning piano, discipline is key. What I do guarantee is that you will not get bored.

My specialty is in classical and jazz music, but I've worked on a wide variety of genres.

Highly recommended
I have 4 little boys and completely understand how hard could be work with young boys however Her style of teaching encourage my boys to learn more ,she works in professional ways which was wonderful.
They were very lucky to had you as their musical teacher in this ages. Thank you so much for your constant inspiration and patience!

I've been taking piano lessons with Laleh for a couple of months. She is a knowledgeable, patient, and helpful teacher who always provides great feedback. She equally spends time on theory and performance based on your favorite style of music. I'm surprised with the amount of progress I've been able to make in such a short period of time. I highly recommend her.

In addition to being a piano, drum, and music software teacher for over a decade, I also work as a composer and sound designer for video games. As someone who had a lot of great teachers growing up, I think it's important to emphasize the fun in learning an instrument, instead of only focusing on technical skills or music theory (though those are big too).

There's no point in taking lessons if you don't like what you're learning. To that end, my specialty is in creating a lesson plan that revolves around getting you the skills you need to perform the music you want to play. Here are just a few examples of the kinds of pieces I've helped students learn in the past:

-I've taught students a ton of Hollywood's best movie scores on piano; everything from Pirates of the Caribbean to The Avengers. Even The Exorcist, if you're down to get scar

-I've helped students learn the ins and outs of ear training by teaching them how to play their favorite anime theme songs from memory alone.

-Like classical or jazz? I've shown people how to shred on everything from Chopin to Count Basie.

-Video game nerd (like me)? There are a ton of amazing soundtracks in games, and I've taught many students how to play songs from Zelda, Halo, and Final Fantasy, as well as indie games like Undertale and Journey.

-Want to be that guy/girl that can bang out awesome Karaoke jams at parties? I've taught people to play hits by Lady Gaga, Journey, 21 Pilots, and many more.

I've worked with kids and adults from beginner to advanced, so no matter what your age, background or skill level, I'd love to meet you and chat about what you want to get out of learning music.

I avoided the piano after I experienced a bad teacher when I was young, but Ryan made me excited to learn again. He is fun and encouraging, patient with my learning style, and makes me feel accomplished with everything I achieve. I cannot recommend him highly enough!
