I teach chess in school settings and private lessons. The skill of students ranges from beginner to intermediate. Some of my students have ratings up to 1200. I can teach you at your home, at my home, or a public place like a library or coffee shop. A typical lesson will be an hour and include a quick chess puzzle, a substantive and level-appropriate lesson, and a challenge game with analysis. All lessons are very dependent on student level, and may include only some of those components.

About Josh
Hi!

I have been working with students for several years in formal and informal settings. I have a degree in psychology, with a minor in statistics. I recently began coaching chess at several local DC area schools, and tutoring private students. I love to help people learn a new subject, and I am especially passionate about engendering the joy of learning in young people.

Thanks!
Josh

I have an organized lesson plan available which I customize to the needs of the student. Another aspect of our lessons requires playing games so I can see that the student has gained the skill taught. We can also review games the student has played once the student learns to write the moves down using standard move notation.

About Mark
I have a BS in Economics (minor Math) and an MS in Economics both from Southern lllinois University at Edwardsville. I also have taken all of the coursework for a PhD in Economics from St. Louis University. I also have 30+ years of experience in Business Economics, Mathematics, and Statistics. I've taught Intro to Business Forecasting (undergrad level), and Introduction to Competitive Intelligence (Graduate Level).

I'm a Veteran of the US Air Force, with a highest rank of Staff Sergeant.

For Chess lessons, I've been a competitive chess player since 1974, and a Life Member of the US Chess Federation since 1974 as well. My current rating is 1790, which places me in the top 5% of competitive players in Texas and the top 10% in the United States. I'm also a certified local tournament director for the US Chess Federation and have ori
ginated and run chess clubs in many different locations, depending on my travels.

I have been coaching students of all ages for the past decade. I am currently coaching for Kids Play Chess in elementary and middle schools while working on improving myself (I intend to become a GM within the next 10 years). I have also taught chess in high school and college environments. I've to chosen to begin coaching 1 on 1 so I can develop more personalized regimens for my students and get the most out of my time and yours. I am currently rated 1900 USCF and have been playing for the past 25 years (since I was three). I would love for you to come and join me on an adventure to become the best chess players possible while having fun along the way!

About Mark
I find that even though chess is a calculated game of strategy, it is important to utilize creativity and critical thinking skills alongside a strong fundamental base. With that being said, chess has one variable component: the players. When coaching it's important to realize what your students' strengths and weaknesses are in order to maximize progress.

I loved learning creative writing from Jacob! He was a really fun teacher, but was also serious about helping me learn. He was always prepared, and really seemed to care about my thoughts.

What I loved most was how it never felt like he was talking AT me, but instead, he was talking with me.

I can't recommend Jacob enough!

Jacob is an adept teacher. In poetry where everything is up to the reader's interpretation, Jacob remained unbiased and gave me great advice, drawing from his vast personal experience. He never tells me what to write, just gives suggestions on what he thinks could be changed.

I've been sending my poetry to Jacob for a long time. He's a very deep and generous reader and always asks a lot of questions before offering suggestions, to make sure that he understands completely what I am trying to accomplish. When he gives me critiques, he has an amazing knack at separating the meat from the bone, tightening my lines, and modifying my structure to best suit my vision for the work.
