The trumpet is one of the most demanding yet rewarding instruments. A dominant voice in classical and jazz; the trumpet can be a section or solo instrument.

Vince began playing trumpet in 1998. He attended lessons at elementary school. Vince soon won principle chair in school ensembles; later with select county and state wide ensembles. He competed in annual solo competitions performing classical and jazz trumpet throughout middle and high school.

In 2003, Vince began studying trumpet privately with Mark Klose; later with John Maguda. Vince primarily studied from methods including Arban's Complete Conservatory Method, Schlossberg's Daily Drills and Technical Studies, Clarke's Technical Studies, and Stamp's Warm-Ups & Studies. Vince also studied classical solo repertoire by by Hindemith, Haydn, and Kennan among others.

While cultivating classical foundation, Vince developed jazz chops by listening, transcribing, and studying many jazz greats including Louis Armstrong, Clifford Brown, Donald Byrd, Miles Davis, and Maynard Ferguson. Vince continued studying trumpet through undergraduate and graduate college with Rebecca Coupe Franks, Dennis Wasko, and John Swana. Vince has also attended master classes held by Matt Gallagher, Craig Morris, Claudio Roditi, Randy Brecker, Malcolm McNab, Scott Holbert, Bijon Watson, Jeff Curnow, and Alison Balsom.

Vince is a strong improviser, which has served him well in the commercial music scene. He is a frequent performer with cover and original bands. In the recording studio, Vince often lends his horns to a wide variety of genres including pop, indie, surf-rock, ambient, and soul.

Vince is an all around trumpet player and soloist; he doubles on other brass instruments including flugelhorn, cornet, slide trumpet, and mellophone. At his home teaching studio he has many brass instruments as well as a library of method books and repertoire.

Vince privately teaches trumpet, guitar, electric bass guitar, arranging, composition, music theory, ear training, and improvisation to students of all ages and levels.

Vince Tampio is a professional musician, arranger, composer, producer, engineer, and educator based in Philadelphia, PA. Although firmly rooted in jazz, he is comfortable with a wide variety of genres including rock, soul, funk, folk, classical, and electronic.

Vince earned the Masters of Music degree in Jazz Performance from the University of the Arts; and earned the Bachelor of Science in Music degree concentrating in Jazz Studies and Theory & Composition from the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz. He studied trumpet through undergraduate and graduate school with Rebecca Coupe Franks, Dennis Wasko, and John Swana. Vince has also attended master classes held by Randy Brecker, Matt Gallagher, Michael Abene, Craig Morris, Steve Wilson, Claudio Roditi, Pat Martino, Malcolm McNab, Matthew Shipp, Scott Holbert, John Abercrombie, Jeff Curnow, and Alison Balsom.

In 2006, Vince got his start teaching trumpet master classes at Silver Creek Central School. He soon took on private students teaching trumpet, guitar, electric bass, improvisation, arrangement and composition. While earning his Master of Music at the University of the Arts, he served as the trumpet department intern. His taught private trumpet lessons, prepared transcriptions for class materials and live performances, and proctored exams. At UArts, Vince was also a Teaching Assistant for the Freshman Jazz Improvisation class. He conducted sectionals, administered exams, and critiqued improvisation. Vince served as electric bass guitar instructor with Rock to the Future. Recently, Vince held a jazz improvisation masterclass at Schenectady County Community College. He currently teaches beginner trumpet with Play On, Philly! Vince authored and published Chromatic Cell Permutations for Trumpet, a technical studies book that explores permutations of chromatic cells as performed on trumpet.

Each student approaches music differently; Vince tailors his teaching to fit students' approaches. He asks each student, "What do you want to accomplish?" Together, they set short and long term goals. Vince believes a strong technical foundation leads to freer ease of artistic expression. His students receive a wholistic approach to music applicable to whatever instrument they choose.

Vince’s original music has been described as “a contemporary instance of fusion done right” (Matthew Aquilin, All About Jazz). His latest album, Adult Children (2020), is a full length instrumental jazz album informed by Hard Bop and inspired by Highlife. "[Vince has] an approach that is more soulful, yet laid back in a way. The influence of Latin music adds more fuel to the fire." (Homer Jackson, Philadelphia Jazz Project). Adult Children is preceded by Tides (2019), The Nook (2018), and Sound Plan (2017).

Vince has contributed to 75+ music and film productions. He arranges for and frequently performs with York Street Hustle (trumpet), You Do You (trumpet), and the John Byrne Band (trumpet, banjo). Vince founded the Philly Phatness horn section, which has recorded with regional, national, and international artists. He also serves as Musical Director and bassist with Phloyd – A Pink Floyd Tribute. I like how this instructor really helped you practice at a pace you were comfortable at. He was very helpful in teaching me how to play higher and lower notes as well as playing songs that I liked.

Vince is a wonderful teacher and a fantastic performer. He introduced me to a handful of rather advanced music theories when I was still a pre-intermediate music student and was able to communicate the ideas clearly and precisely. We don't play the same instruments--I'm a guitarist, he's a trumpeter--but it didn't matter since Vince uses clear language and live examples to demonstrate what he teaches. I learned a lot from him and would highly recommend lessons with him, especially one-on-one style lessons.

Vince really knows his stuff! I play acoustic guitar. I guess I would classify myself as an intermediate player. What I really like about Vince is the variety of instruments he can teach. I have had the chance to also learn about playing electric guitar and electric bass.

Vince is a very gifted multi-instrumentalist and recording engineer. He is an excellent trumpet player, bassist, backing vocalist and pro-tools engineer. His ear for arrangement is spot-on. Other defining attributes are his patience and willingness to teach. Vince will never look at the clock or feel like he is doing you a favor when he is teaching you something challenging. That, to me, is as important as technical prowess. Hire Vince as your teacher and you'll have no regrets!
