Teaching since:
January 1998

I have been teaching individual and group lessons for 12+ years. Many of my students have won trophies at the Granquist music competition and also play in local youth orchestras. My own youth string ensemble plays publicly at many popular local venues several times a year. I enjoy exposing my students to the finer points of being a professional musician such as the camaraderie, team work, creativity (creating harmonies, tailoring arrangements to fit student’s level) and of course, stage presence. I am very proud of my students. It is so gratifying to see their confidence build with each new skill they master.

*** Lesson Details ***
My approach to teaching is to combine fundamentals with “adventure.” I encourage students to experiment with their instrument and have quite a few budding composers. No two students learn in the same way, so I don’t use the same strategy for each individual. I believe music should be fun and rewarding. I like to expose students to many different types of music, i.e.; jazz, pop, blues, folk and of course, classical. Students are more likely to practice music that speaks to their personality.

My teaching environment is very laid back. I expect my students to practice, but I don’t read them the riot act if they show up to a lesson not having practiced much the week before. I encourage them to practice more the next week and I give them strategies for how to fit practice time into their schedule along with the most efficient way to practice their pieces.

I encourage parents to sit in on their child’s lesson, but I don’t require it. The more a parent is informed about their child’s goals, the better they are able to assist, support and facilitate the student’s practice. Involved parents contribute greatly to a child’s success.

I love teaching adults too! It is never too late to learn an instrument and the rewards carry over into all aspects of life. As with children, music makes us all smarter. Research proves this. We learn complicated spacial and math skills without even realizing it; we’re having too much fun!

I have annual recitals for private students. I speak Spanish.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Basement studio finished and separate from house

*** Travel Equipment ***
Sometimes music. I can refer students to instrument rental or purchase places, but do not have instruments to provide. I can obtain music for the students if they prefer, otherwise I will tell them what and where to buy.

*** Specialties ***
I use Suzuki and other books for material, but my teaching is more traditional. I use actual bowhold from start. My own invention - pinky AND thumb houses. Music reading is introduced fairly early. A little at a time and it's painless.

I’m an adult with a fair amount of previous musical experience but absolutely none with a stringed instrument. Tracy’s approach for that kind of beginner is ideal. She is firm about establishing sound fundamental technique from day 1 and building on it with practice pieces that provide just the right amount of challenge. She is encouraging and phenomenally patient. If technique problems or incipient bad habits arise as more complicated material is taken on, she is all over them and always has corrective measures to pull out of her (extensive) bag of teaching tricks. I would recommend her to anyone interested in learning a new instrument.

Tracy got the ball rolling right away! Only a 30 minute lesson, but more than enough to give me the tools to keep learning over the week. You can tell she really knows her stuff, and she has a bunch of ready to go instructional papers for beginners like myself. (I'm an adult beginner, 26 learning piano for the first time!) She gaged my learning speed on the fly and was tailoring the lesson to my needs as we went, which was really cool. Great teacher, very flexible and talented. I would definitely recommend her!

Tracy is not only delightful but works extremely well with children. She is very knowledgeable about music in general and we are going to upgrade our singing lessons to include piano lessons.

Teaching is a talent to itself

I knew Tracy played a lot of instruments and sang and is talented. But having these talents does not always make a great teacher. It's a difficult thing to take what you know and teach it to others in a way that's understandable to someone at a beginner level. Tracy exceeded my expectations as a teacher, she is brilliant at it. Very kind, understanding and patient. She offered so many beginner suggestions and homework, I knew she has done this with great success before. I'm looking forward to my next lesson! Always the mark of a great teacher.

My daughter has made enormous progress

I am happy to recommend Tracy as an instructor for piano, violin, cello and flute. I have known her for 6 years during which she has been my daughter's piano teacher. Grace was 8 years old and had no prior musical experience when she started working with Tracy, and she has made a great deal of progress since then. I think Tracy interacts really well with young people and I have always been especially impressed with her patience and use of positive reinforcement. I also appreciate her flexibility and willingness to diverge from standard method books by providing sheet music from different sources and genres that she thought would spark Grace's interest. She also puts in a lot of effort to create performance opportunities for her students such as recitals, or public performances, or by encouraging participation in competitions.

Tracy is enthusiastic and has a lively personality that I think helps her to communicate well with students and keep their interest. She is a talented musician who sings and plays several instruments herself and she brings that experience into her lessons. Through her own example she demonstrates both a love of music and the dedication required to be a musician.

Mom of Piano Student

My daughter had been taking piano for 3 years before starting with Tracy. Her style and love of music is just the change we were looking for. My daughter has never smiled so much after a music lesson. She's finally starting to enjoy herself, and after all - that's what it's all about!
