I have had a varied background growing up, from being an Eagle Scout, to holding a black belt in Judo. Growing up in Arizona and being the youngest of three boys from a very musical family, I found classical music and it became my passion. I began with piano at age 9, while also sang in many church musicals. In 2006 I graduated from Northern Arizona University with two degrees: a bachelors in vocal performance and a bachelors in piano/choral education. At NAU, I sang in many operas and piano recitals and spent three months in Germany teaching choir through the Department of Defense.Shortly after, I graduated with a masters in vocal performance from Washington University in St. Louis. The studies I learned from Wash U catapulted my love for teaching!Recently, I have been teaching out of St. John School of the Arts, where I worked with voice and piano students ages 7-60. All of my students had varying styles, but I was able to help them build a foundation of technique that would allow them to sing with a free and healthy tone in any style.I believe we all have the ability to create music and I can help you discover it!
*** Lesson Details ***
My goal in voice lessons is first and foremost to establish a solid vocal technique. My philosophy is "singing is simple, but not easy!" We will focus mostly on two things: breath and space for singing. This method of teaching is known as "bel canto". It helps build a strong foundation that then allows you to sing almost any style! Because everyone is different, we will tailor a set of exercises to fit your needs and will help you build that strong foundation! Once these principles begin to settle in, we will work on music. I have a huge library of songs to chose from, but I highly encourage you to bring in your favorite songs. Remember, everyone is different and progresses at different rates, but don't be discouraged! This is not a race, but a life skill that you will continue to master!
In piano, I am classically trained. Through a series of music books, we will work on music theory, finger dexterity, music history, ear training, eye/hand coordination, and pure enjoyment of making music. Again, everyone is different, but with some outside commitment, you will improve! Classical piano training is a great foundation for all other styles, such as jazz, pop, singer songwriter, country, etc. Piano also helps with in other aspects of your life such as memory, math, history, reading, etc.

*** Specialties ***
I am a classically trained baritone specializing in bel canto. I have found this technique to be a great foundation for all styles of singing, from opera to pop. I am also classically trained at the piano. I focus on natural hand positions, note identification, music theory, and ear training. And I have fun doing it!
Taught a full studio of piano and voice students. Between 20-40 students depending on the year.
I had a great experience in learning the correct mechanics of my instrument and how to use and apply.
Tom has been working with our daughter to aid her in understanding the concepts of music theory. He is patient and provides outside material for her to reinforce the concepts they are working on together. He has a passion for teaching music and it is evident in his desire for his students to grow.+ Read More
Tom is amazing to work with! He understands how to teach my child how to use his voice as an instrument. He works on vocal techniques and strategies as my son learned foreign language songs, musical and classical pieces. Tom also taught my son musical theory, as well as the tools to play jazz piano. The most helpful extra was preparing him for auditions, solos, and juries.+ Read More
We really enjoyed having Tom as our piano teacher. He taught 3 of my kids for 4 years till he moved 😥. He taught them technic, theory and also let my kids choose some fun songs that they wanted to play. He made sure the kids were having fun even though they did have to practice and played some classical songs. My kids have improved alot since they started taking too!+ Read More
I had a singing lesson with Tom and I plan on having another one.He is pleasant to work with and is patient. If you are a beginner with singing you should schedule a class with him because he will help you get techniques and warm ups.
Tom really helped me out with a solid lesson on notes.
I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this experience. I thought a singing lesson over the internet would be choppy or tinny, but the audio and visual quality was quite good. Tom, the teacher, knew his stuff, too. If I had one change to make it would be to have a way to provide information about my goals/aims of the helpout beforehand. Tom was quite a good opera singer, but I was looking to get some basics on some less lofty stuff. I still learned a couple of good solid concepts as a beginner, but I felt a little embarrassed. Overall, though, 4 stars for the technical quality and knowledge of the teacher.
It felt so awkward to sing in front(?) of a stranger but Tom was great! He explained by using the relationship between frequency and sound
He is very patient and friendly and an amazing teacher! I learned a lot, and look forward to learning more!
It was a nice session. Mr. Tom is very friendly. I totally recommend him.
Skilled, comprehensive and fun piano teacher
We hired Tom to teach piano to our 9-year old--an energetic, creative, and sometimes distracted kiddo who was transitioning from a teacher we absolutely loved (but who was taking a hiatus). Tom has proven to be everything that my son needs: he is thorough, patient, reliable, and challenging. My son loves to compose music and Tom has taken that passion to help him learn theory and push his creative and performance side. Tom has been completely reliable and professional, always on time and communicative. We are truly happy we found him!
