About Thomas G.

Hi there! I've been playing saxophone, flute, and clarinet professionally for nearly 15 years, frequently touring the United States and Europe giving concerts and teaching. I live in New York City and have worked on Broadway, in film scores, and orchestras as a woodwind specialist. I hold three degrees, including a Doctorate, in music performance. I currently serve as Professor of Saxophone at the Longy School of Music, where I teach graduate level players from all around the world. I also teach woodwinds at the Aaron Copland School of Music--Queens College and the 92nd Street Y School of Music in Manhattan, and privately in a beautiful loft studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I am very passionate about music education at any age! I want my students to leave lessons empowered, engaged, and with more love for music-making than they came in with. Music is both incredibly fun and challenging, and I make the learning process a positive one. Let's begin!

Thomas is a great teacher! He's got a very dynamic style, can answer any question I throw at him, and has been great at tailoring his lessons to meet what I'm after as someone who played the saxophone years ago and is now picking up the clarinet. Thoroughly recommend!

My son has been studying with Mr Thomas for 5 years! He is a very talented musician/teacher and I’ve seen such progress in my sons playing over the years. He has helped him write his own pieces and prepped him for his orchestra performances. “Mr. Thomas is really fun to play music with and you learn a lot. He even helped me with transcribing a video game soundtrack that I loved into my recital piece”! We highly recommend Mr. Thomas!

My son took clarinet lessons in-person and then transitioned to online when COVID happened. He tried piano and violin before but clarinet is the first instrument that Micah was super excited about. He learned and improved so much with the one on one instruction with Thomas. He says clarinet is his passion now and looks forward to every lesson. I recommend Thomas to teach your child. He is patient, kind and can find ways to motivate kids to play at their best.
