Levels Taught:
Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
An experienced and certified Suzuki teacher, my students learn to play the violin starting from a solid foundation with emphasis on posture and producing a beautiful tone. In addition to playing the instrument, students can expect to learn reading music, basic theory, music history, and ear training. Learning violin will teach patience, concentration, the value of hard work, coordination, as well as enhancing memory, aural skills, and fine motor control. It was Dr. Suzuki's belief and mine that learning an instrument not only fosters these skills but also helps to foster the hearts and minds of those learning the craft.

Sylvia is a violinist based in Cleveland, with an active career as a performer and teacher. She is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music with both a Bachelor’s in Violin Performance and a Master’s degree in Violin Performance and Suzuki Pedagogy. A fully certified teacher through the Suzuki Association of the Americas, she teaches through the Music Settlement, Laurel School, Bard High School, and maintains a private studio of students in Cleveland and Zimbabwe with ages ranging from three year-olds to adults. As a performer, she performs regularly throughout the Cleveland area with the Akron Symphony, and in chamber and solo appearances in a variety of settings from concert halls to hospitals.

During the summers Ms. W has participated in Bowdoin International Music Festival, National Repertory Orchestra, and Music Inspire Africa, a life-changing program that allowed her to share her love of performing and teaching music with the people of South Africa and Zimbabwe. Building from this experience, Ms. W founded her own program in 2017, Cleveland Harare Music Exchange, which seeks to bring musical guidance to the children of Harare, Zimbabwe through the Suzuki method and high level performances.

Ms. W believes strongly in music education as a tool for social change, and is excited to study this topic in depth as a member of the 2018 Global Leaders Program. As a participant, Ms. W will have the opportunity to engage a diverse group of students in Chile and Puerto Rico this spring.

Sylvia is calm and supportive. I am just restarting my lessons and it can be frustrating. Sylvia is patient and stays with my strengths, while encouraging me to work on the areas that are difficult. Really appreciate her style, so far.

We have multiple aged children taking piano lessons with Sylvia. She has a good disposition with each child from 3 to 10 years of age and knows how to work at each of their levels. Sylvia's attention to detail and follow through when teaching is impeccable.

Sylvia is doing a great job with my 5 year old son. She is patient but no nonsense in her approach. She is very good at breaking the concepts down to a child's level. She has been coming to my home to give the lessons and is always on time. She has been flexible when I have needed to move the appointment time. We are quite pleased.
