Learn the Violin through masterful teachings from an expert violinist

I use the Suzuki Violin Method and the ABCs of Violin Method, but am willing to work with other method books as well. I have developed extensive supplemental resources that I'll use with any curriculum. I also work with orchestra/band students to help them succeed, usually taking a break from the method books to focus on that season's music. I can prepare you for contests and auditions, help you work in a small or large ensemble, grow you as a soloist, or help you learn a new style. Beginning students will gain a solid grasp of all the "essentials": basic theory, sight reading skills, counting, and technique. As soon as you have these, you have a lot of freedom with what you want to work on! I take kids, adults, and teens. I have experience teaching kids with disabilities including Down's syndrome, trauma/PTSD, ADHD, cerebral palsy, and more.

Hi! I'm Sylvia--I play piano, violin, and viola professionally, and guitar, flute, and clarinet amateurly. I'm in school to become a music therapist, since I've seen how powerful music can be in treating a huge variety of illnesses, both physical and mental. My teaching core values are: -praise > criticism -students' goals trump teacher's ego -technique should be practical and logical, not "because this is the way it's done" -kids are smart humans -music theory is cool -there is no one right learning style I want to help my students develop their skills in a way that respects them and their strengths, helps them achieve their goals, and aligns with their personal learning style, no matter how different that is from mine. Music is AWESOME; I'm excited to get to learn about it with you!
