Music theory is a fancy term for "how to think about music". If you wish to learn how and why certain music sounds like it does or makes you feel the way it does, we can explore these theories and concepts to develop different strategies to help you reach the next level of artistic expression.

About Richard

Music is my life. Since the age of 16, I have studied the guitar extensively. During my high-school years I was involved in band, marching band, choir, and independent music theory. I started my first band when I was 19 in the U.S. Army, and my life has never been the same since. I played music

Like other subjects I teach, we will begin at your current level and progress from there. If you're just starting to learn music theory and need to learn the basics - or even if you're more advanced and want to learn elements of voice leading, atonal theory, or even Schenkerian analysis - I will explain theoretical concepts, break them down, and ensure you understand each aspect of our lesson. I have also given music theory lessons as a way of tutoring students currently enrolled in an academic music theory course. Just let me know your current level and we'll design a plan for you!

About Jeremy

I've been composing and arranging music professionally for over 20 years. As Staff Arranger for the US Air Force Bands program, I have crafted selections ranging from classical/symphonic compositions to pop/rock/country arrangements, jazz & big band selections, and chamber music. My music has been

I needed help knowing how to arrange a full band work for my Instrumentation Class project. I offered to pay him to do it for me but he wouldn't do that (haha). But he did sit with me and show me how to do it myself and I was happy I learned something. It wasn't great but if I had the desire to be an arranger then I would definitely study more with Jeremy.
Ryan
Jeremy did a great job teaching me how to write an arrangement for a jazz band. I hadn't ever done anything like that and had no clue how to write rhythm parts. He gave me all the help I needed to know how to write chord symbols and notation for a rhythm section - lead sheets for the piano and guitar players, a bass part, and drum set parts. They all said the parts looked great. Thanks Jeremy!
Christy
Without Jeremy, I never would've gotten my Master's Degree. As I was preparing for my comprehensive exams in music performance, I had five pieces ranging from Medieval all the way through 20th century that had to be studied and analyzed for the music theory section of my exam. Jeremy was able to help me (and my entire study group) by teaching us in a knowledgeable, yet approachable way. He has a great deal of patience and a very kind demeanor. I wish I had encountered a teacher like him while in my undergrad music studies. He simplified so many of the concepts and ideas of music theory which really helped me to understand the analysis process and gave me full confidence when taking my comprehensive exams. He never made me feel stupid when asking questions and even when he had to explain the same concept over and over (which that happened often) he never lost his patience. He is so incredibly knowledgeable as a musician and such a delightfully kind person.

Laying a good foundation of reading and technique is important regardless of the style you wish to play so that you can continue to teach yourself and grow as you take lessons. I also incorporate music theory into lessons so that students really understand and apply concepts that they are playing. I love diversity, so my students are encouraged to play classical, jazz, and contemporary music! Playing is fun and becomes more fun as you progress and start to make discoveries not only in, but out of the classroom. I encourage transcription and arranging/reharm as well! Looking forward to making music with you!

About Carl

From the very first lesson, I could tell that Carl would be a excellent fit for my daughter. She has studied classical piano for six years and wanted to learn some different musical styles. He helped her turn her one finger hunt and peck gospel song into something that sounded like Sunday morning. And he's been so good about helping her find music she likes to play. Highly recommend!

"I'm a late starter (62, recently retired physician) to the incredibly complex instrument, and I genuinely believed it was impossible to become proficient enough to enjoy the piano the way I envisioned. Having Mr. Ma as my mentor revealed an entire world of musical expression I did not realize existed. His ability to explain and execute surreal concepts is astounding, revealing musical secrets with comprehensive ease. I struggled to learn piano with previous mentors who treated the craft more as sport and exercise than art; Mr. Ma has re-instilled my passion for the arts, focusing on expression, color, and story-telling. His experience as a rising concert pianist on the world's foremost stages gives him perspective that the majority of mentors simply don't have. I would recommend him to any person who struggled to make progress or maintain interest with purely physical, repetitive tasks. I look forward to my lessons every week, and even recently decided to purchase a wonderful concert grand piano for myself to further explore the classical repertoire."

"I do not have ear for music nor have any prior knowledge on music. I was very skeptical so I was not really committed to it. But Anna understood my limitation and motivated me to see music in different way and now I love it. I have been taking classes with her now more than six months and hands down best Violin teacher. She is very patient, motivating, funny and most of all very talented and knows how to make music stick for non-musical people like me.
Thank you so much for introducing me to violin in a right way that now I like to play for playing."

Drum Sticking Stars: 10 Celebrities Who Play Drums

In the age of reality television, talent isn’t always a prerequisite to stardom, but some of today’s celebrities are legitimately multi-talented -- and some of them are even drummers. Here are 10 celebrities who play drums. 1. Miles Teller If you saw Miles Teller play drums in "Whiplash", you probably thought he had a double, or that the filmmakers used camera tricks or CGI, but that was actually the actor playing the drums.
