Discover the joy of music with lessons from a fun and friendly expert

We will work together to develop your musicianship and make learning music fun, regardless of age or musical background. Lessons will be at your pace, tailored to your interests, and, perhaps most importantly, will foster a love and understanding of music. Students will learn songs they love to play — from any genre — while also developing important skills such as learning how to practice, note reading, rhythm, playing by ear, and technique, as well as songwriting, composing, improvisation, and music theory.

My primary goal as a teacher is to make music lessons a positive, life-enriching experience for my students. Above all, our lessons will focus on reaching your musical potential and goals. Lesson curriculum will cover the practical skills you need in order to develop musical fluency, creativity, and confidence so playing your instrument and learning new material doesn’t become a mundane or stressful chore. I have been teaching piano, guitar, and music theory for the past 12 years in both private and classroom settings, working with students of all ages, levels, and musical backgrounds, including students with special needs.    I hold a Master’s degree in Music from University of California, Irvine and a Bachelor of Music degree in Performance and Audio Engineering from Berklee College of Music, Boston. Over the last decade, I’ve been based in New York and Southern California, where I run my private music studio, teaching students across the country via online and in-person lessons, in addition to performing in various settings and working as an accompanist and music director. Please feel free to send me a message if you have any questions about lessons or scheduling!

My best friend and I began in-person guitar lessons with Summer at age 9 (both having had few years of exhaustive piano lessons with various other teachers); we are now leaving for college and still just as enthusiastic about seeing her, though over Facetime, as we were the first time we met. Summer has encouraged us not only to understand the fundamentals of music theory, but pushes us to make every piece our own and even endeavor to write our own songs. She has watched us grow in more ways than I can count, and I am eternally grateful to call her not just a terrific teacher, but a friend as well. And it must be said that she has put up with many hours of distracted giggling and bickering, and, for that, I commend her as well.

I can confidently say Summer is the best piano teacher I’ve had in my 13 years of taking lessons. She understands the importance of learning about music holistically, making sure I get practice with sheet music/reading, ear training, and music theory; and her kindness and patience make our lessons the highlight of my week. I have grown the most musically with her as my instructor and cannot recommend her enough!
