I have been studying and performing music for 20+ years. After majoring in music at College of Dupage in Glen Ellyn IL, I went to step up my level of study at the Percussion Institute of Technology (P.I.T.) at Musician's Institute in Hollywood, CA in 2001 attaining a Performance Certificate from my time studying there.
Moving back to Chicago after L.A. in 2002 proved to be the right move as this is when I began my teaching career. With 13+ years of private and group music instruction experience, I have worked with Hix Brothers Music, Naperville Music, Roselle Music, Streamwood Park District, Roselle Park District, Schaumburg Park District, After School Enrichment Solution's Guitar Stars, Band For Today, Guitar Fundamentals, Chicago Guitar Instruction, Schaumburg Music Academy, Music Makers of Western Springs, Clarendon Hills Music Academy, and also maintain a private clientele. Well into a thousand lessons taught, students have stayed with me for up to 7 years. You, the student, will gain all the experience I have gained from my 20 years of study, performance, and instruction.
Performing with various bands in the 2000's, I pinpointed my style and mastered my technique that gave me many performance opportunities regionally and nationally, noting most current act U2 tribute Vertigo USA.
I am co-founder of the music licensing production company Blue Shade Music, co-writing with astute musicians in the Chicago area for music libraries in Florida and California currently.
With national and international touring experience, I was featured in an exclusive interview for Online Drummer in August of 2011 sharing my knowledge and experience of music and drums.
Thank you for reading, and I hope to have a fun and educational time with you!

My 10 year old son has been taking lessons with Steve for almost 2 years. Prior to Steve, Nathan was enrolled in group lessons at the park district. After a unpleasant experience with the group lessons , we decided to try private lessons. Steve has done an amazing job working with Nathan. Like most kids, some days it is hard to keep his attention, but Steve does an amazing job. He has kept Nathan focused while still allowing him to have fun playing the guitar. Based on our experience, I would highly recommend Steve as a musical instructor.+ Read More
Steven is very patient with new beginners and explained things thoroughly. He gave me the necessary tools to practice on my own until our next lesson .
Steven was beyond helpful. He is always prepared and open to as many questions as you can think of. And if you don't fully understand the answer, he'll take the time to answer in different ways, so that you're on the same page. He was also very helpful in setting up the lesson times and locations.
It was my first time trying the drums and I didn't have a drum set yet. Steven took the time to sit down with me and discuss which drum sets were good for the price.
Overall, this was a great experience!
I'm a true challenge since I am very green with little music capability. Great introduction with plenty to work on.
My son is enjoying playing the guitar cause of Steve. He is a great instructor. I would recommend him to anyone.
Steven is a great teacher! He's flexible, and works well with all ages! He's teaching my 3 kids, drums, guitar and bass. He's very receptive and adjusts his lessons according to what my kids are interested in. For example one of my kids was learning notes, but then the other wanted to learn a specific song and he easily adjusted to focus on what each of them wanted to do to. My kids love him!+ Read More
I took 5 in-home guitar lessons from Steve and loved every minute! I had never played guitar before so we were starting from scratch. We covered a lot of information, tailored to what I wanted to learn, and I felt like I made a lot of progress in a short amount of time. Steve was always on time, well-prepared for lessons, and was very encouraging. I would recommend Steve to anyone interested in taking guitar lessons.+ Read More
Steven is very patient with my 5 year old and very good at explaining things at his level.
My daughter (8) and I both began guitar lessons from Steve over this past summer to try something new, and we really enjoyed having Steve as a teacher! I found him to be very friendly and easy-going, and was very patient with us both being beginners. He did a great job encouraging proper technique and good guitar habits - the things you cannot just learn from a book. My daughter had never had music lessons of any sort before, and I have played other instruments for 25+ years; despite our different backgrounds and level of musical knowledge, Steve was able to teach both of us effectively. I believe his ability to differentiate teaching style and instructional pace speaks to his overall knowledge of music, of guitar, and especially to his ability as a teacher. I would happily recommend Steve as a guitar teacher to anyone, either adult or child!+ Read More
Our son looks forward to lessons with Steve!
Steve is a great drum teacher! He has been working with my son for almost a year. He is very patient and has a nice sense of humor (which is necessary when training kids).
He conducts a review with my son at the start of each session and offers words of encouragement throughout. After the lesson is over, Steve always confers with me and objectively reviews the lesson's achievements, parts to work on, and goals for next week. Our family recommends him for young and adult students!
One of the best teachers around!
I have known Steve for many years as a fellow drummer and educator. We come from the same background as far as schooling and theory's on how to teach students. I have subbed for him several times and have always been impressed with the knowledge and skill level of even students that have been with him for a short time. I would highly recommend him to anyone thinking about starting or advancing their skills!
Steven is a great teacher. He is very patient and knowledgable. He has a good techniques in Drum and also encourage me to keep learning it. Overall, I like this class and I will continue learning from him
Steve is an excelent teacher.
Steve has been with my son for over a year teaching him drums. My son enjoys the lesson with Steve and looks forward every week to the lesson. Steve has great amount of skill and teaching ability. Steve has patients and I believe is an excellent teacher. I observe the lesson with my child on a weekly basis. Steve always interacts with the parent and explains the lesson plan and the accomplishments. Steve also reviews the lesson and homework before the child leaves. I look forward of a long term teaching experience with Steve and my son.
Steve is a wonderful teacher - highly recommend
My son started taking lessons with Steve at 7 years old. He's now 15 and still at it. Steve is patient, intelligent and has a great way of working with students at their level. I would highly recommend him to anyone interested in beginning drums or, if already playing, taking their music to the next level.
Since our son started drum lessons, his progress in the past six months with Steve blows away that of his previous four years under two other teachers. Steve stresses fundamental drum skills but also encourages implementation of those skills through songs that are enjoyable, engaging, and current.
Steve has also helped our son succeed outside of just the lesson room. He gave him invaluable tips to help him shine during his Rock School gig. He instilled him with insight and confidence as he prepared to audition for his school's advanced jazz band; when we told Steve that our son was one of only two seventh grade percussionists to make the mostly eighth-grade band, he exuded such genuine pride and joy in our son's accomplishment. As parents, Steve is exactly the kind of teacher we want for our child!
My son learned a tremendous amount from lessons with Steve
My son took lessons from Steve, in an Aurora music store, for almost four years before Steve left that establishment. Steve had my 8 year old playing on a drum kit within 3 months of beginning lessons (which may not be typical) but it furthered my son's drive to improve. My son was in a band by the age of 10, which produced their own CD and garnered many accolades at local competitions (winning just about every one they entered) and performed at local venues, including our town's summer festival for four years in a row (for which they were paid to perform). I believe that every successful band has a great drummer keeping time. As the rest of the band aged into college, my son continues to play the drum on snare line in marching band at his high school, a position which he earned as a Freshman (which is not typical), but which, we believe, the skill set he learned from lessons with Steve afforded him. He also entered high school in the Symphonic Band (mid level band) as a Freshman and was moved to the Wind Ensemble (top level band) as a Sophomore. Steve worked with him in several aspects of drumming, from rudiments, to school work (middle school jazz band) and pop music, on the drum kit. Steve is serious about teaching and expects students to practice and come prepared to their lessons. Practice is the only thing that makes them improve! If your child is (or you are) serious about learning to play the drums, Steve would be a great teacher to have.
Steve is an excellent teacher.
Steve has been my son's teacher for a year and my son's playing ability has increased dramatically from his previous instructor. My son really enjoys his class time with Steve and the way he teaches music. He engages my son to want to play better. He takes time to let me know how my son is doing, what he needs to work on, and he should do at home to progress. Steve is an excellent teacher.
My daughter has been taking drum lessons at Naperville Music with Steve for 7 months now and she is doing great. Steve is a great teacher: patient, thorough, dedicated and knowledgeable. I highly recommend him as a drum instructor to anyone
Great Drum Teacher!
Steve Bitte is an exceptional drum teacher. He is able to motivate students of all ages. He empowers his students. Practice and music theory under his instruction are hip, fun and just plain cool. He is very patient and encouraging. He can see where there are problems and he is able to help the student conquer any difficulties. He is a dedicated teacher able to inspire all students.
If you're looking for great drum lessons with an industry professional, then look no further than Steve Bitte.
I took lessons from Steve for almost six years. In that time, I progressed from a hapless amateur to a relatively accomplished, growing musician. Steve's lessons helped me achieve that level of growth. I couldn't recommend him enough to any level player looking for some guidance.
