Bass Guitar

Levels Taught:
Beginner, Intermediate
I have been playing Bass Guitar as long as I've been playing Guitar (over 30 years). The Bass is a melodic, harmonic and supportive instrument; It has a very important role to play: to enhance the chords under the melody. My inspirations are Paul McCartney, James Jamerson, Willie Dixon and Donald "Duck" Dunn, among others. Let me teach you how to lay down a Bass line that locks in with the drums and supports the song

Teaching since:

Steve has been teaching private lessons since 1995 and is currently available to teach lessons at his studio or at your home. Steve has helped students learn how to play Guitar, Bass, Mandolin and Ukulele. His favorite styles are Rock, Blues, Folk and Bluegrass.

Steve received his training at Berklee College of Music where he received a degree in songwriting and performance. Steve keeps busy as a professional songwriter and accompanist: he plays behind many singer/songwriters, and has toured the states and Europe.

Steve looks forward to sharing his love for music and helping new students achieve their goals. Steve's teaching style is song-based: teaching student songs by bands they love, therefor giving them the motivation to practice and get better. From there, the lessons expand from chords to rhythm, scales and music theory. Singing is encouraged, but not required.

I am an adult who has never played an instrument before, and Steve makes our sessions informative and fun. He is extremely patient and knowledgeable about technique, music theory, and playing with others. Steve’s enthusiasm is inspiring and he always manages to make me feel that I am getting better, even on days when my fingers are misbehaving.

I highly recommend Steve, no matter what your experience or skill level is. He is a great guide to learning and playing an instrument.

Our son learned to play the guitar with Steve when he was 11 or 12 years old. Steve was always fun, friendly and patient. He is a natural teacher. Our son had a very easy time relating to Steve and always looked forward to his weekly lessons. Steve was his teacher for several years and went above and beyond what was expected of him, for example by attending our son's performances with his school band. Steve instilled in our son what I am sure will be a life long love of playing the guitar. Our son is now 18 and is still extremely into the guitar, so much so that he won a Young Arts award and was accepted to the 2017 Grammy Jazz Camp. While Steve moved away from Cambridge (where we live) to Brooklyn for family reasons, they still stay in close touch, which is a testament to the great teacher-student relationship they had.
