Overview

Hi, I'm Stephen. I am a Vocal Technician and Trainer, Singer-songwriter, Acting Coach, and Career Consultant. I've been teaching for 15 years and I'm here to help you build your voice and tap into your artistry. :)
I have been singing since I was 3, anything and everything from Michael Jackson to Elvis Presley to Luciano Pavarotti. Originally from Colorado, I studied music/theatre, as well as vocal pedagogy at The University of Colorado at Boulder, where I graduated with highest honors. I made my Broadway debut in The Phantom of the Opera at age 24. I also performed in Chess in concert as a featured rock tenor soloist at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway with Josh Groban. I have understudied and performed lead roles in the first AEA National Tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Whistle Down the Wind. Regionally, I have played many lead roles all over the United States in productions including Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, The Wild Party, and She Loves Me. Currently I am recording my first pop/rock/neo-soul EP, building a TIYA Community, and focusing on SAG-AFTRA TV/Film projects. Recently, I booked lead roles in 4 SAG short films and was called back for producers for a Series Regular for "The Knick," an episodic series being produced and directed by Steven Soderbergh. My specialty is building, strengthening, and conditioning voices to unleash your authentic vocal timbre. My clients range from singer-songwriters, news anchors, dancers, comedians, CEO's, actors, as well as karaoke enthusiasts, and (aspiring) Broadway performers. They have performed on television in Smash, Glee, and venues around NYC ranging from The Underground, Le Poisson Rouge, Drom, Cornelia Street Cafe, Arlene’s Grocery, to the Broadway productions of Ghost, Sister Act, Evita, Wicked, West Side Story, South Pacific, The Phantom of the Opera, and Rent to name a few. I was a "belter" when I was a kid, trained classically for 6 years, and my journey has led me to create my own unique method combining speech level singing with bel canto techniques. You will see/hear/feel immediate results. My passion is storytelling and songwriting, and especially pop/rock.

*** Lesson Details ***
We will always work on whatever you want. As a vocal technician/trainer I am like going to the gym for your voice. My exercises are safe, simple, and most importantly, I teach you how to practice correctly. You may use my time however you wish (Voice, Acting, or Artistic/Career guidance). Most sessions will usually be a combination of vocal strengthening/ conditioning, and then exploring/performing a song. I also can work with you on film scenes, theatre monologues and ACTing the song. The key is to TAP into your Artistry. (Trust the Awareness and Play).

*** Studio Equipment ***
Yamaha Clavinova YDP-142 88-Key Digital Piano with Bench Black

Yamaha FG700S Acoustic Guitar

Bose Wave Music System

For online lessons:

*** Specialties ***
The vocal training method is uniquely my own as it combines both Bel Canto and Speech Level Singing. Emphasis is on developing a relaxed, released, authentic vocal timbre to sing in any style. Concepts explained and explored in my masterclasses and private lessons include utilizing the mask, developing resonance, 2 instruments in 1, posture, breath management, vocal cord adduction, trigger phrases, vocal placement, ring, consistency, and much more.

I graduated with highest honors from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a degree in both music and theatre. I have been very fortunate to perform on Broadway, National Tour, and play regional leads all over the United States. Recently, I have played lead roles in 4 SAG short films and last year I went to producers for both HBO and Cinemax series regulars. I am also currently working on and producing my own pop album.

My studio is a community that teaches technical, professional, and artistic development. I created Tap Into Your Artistry out of my own innate passion for stories, the mystery and joy of the human voice, and my love of singing, acting, and songwriting. My studio embraces a Zen like spirit with an athletic mentality.

I had been singing for over a decade before taking my first lesson with Stephen. I had never had a singing lesson before and was unsure how they would go or even how much they would help me. Within the first five minutes I knew I had made the correct decision to go with Stephen. He broke the voice down in a way that made total sense to me, and allowed me to focus on the individual parts of the voice before putting them all together. After just 3 lessons, I am already starting to feel a difference in breath support and confidence in hitting softer notes, two things I have always struggled with. I fully intend to continue working with Stephen to grow as both a singer and an actor. Would highly recommend to anyone from beginner to professional.

Stephen is a very thorough singing teacher. After 5 lessons, I know so much more about singing than I even thought there was to it. I already feel like I improved a tremendous amount, and I have fun in his classes. My range increased, my breath management improved, and the quality of my voice is also much nicer. I can only recommend Stephen.

I booked my first 3 shows!

I started my vocal journey with Stephen just about two years ago, from scratch. Under his professional guidance, I have already landed my first 3 regional theater shows, AND my first major role of Val in "A Chorus Line"! Stephen's lessons are always fun, efficient, and he has a keen sense on how to best help me in my professional growth. As a dancer who sings, I look forward to seeing what lies ahead in my vocal training and career!

Excellent - transformed my voice

I've been studying with Stephen for almost 3 years and in that time my voice has developed immensely. He is in the business so he truly understand the market and helps prepare you for auditions. Through customized exercises to fit my needs I find I can now sing songs I once thought were "out of my range". Very flexible and available teacher, who can also help with acting and career consulting.

Singing
An Excellent Source IF YOU REALLY WANT TO LEARN HOW TO SING!

About me: I am an actor, dancer, writer, choreographer…an artist; as well as an acting teacher and coach. It's been a life long dream to sing and sing well. I was cast in the chorus as a kid a couple times, but really had no clue about my voice; how it worked or what to do with it. As far as I knew/experienced I was an average to bad singer, with little to no vocal talent. I thought singing was a "God-given gift". You either had "it" or you didn't. I knew my Dad could sing, but my mom was a terrified singer and somewhat terrifying to hear. I thought I was somewhere in between, like my eyes, half blue, like Mom, half hazel, like Dad. And nothing I could do about it. Until I met Stephen...

About Stephen: Working with Stephen regularly has changed all of this. Stephen doesn't just magically "get you to sing". HE TEACHES YOU HOW YOUR VOICE WORKS. He helps you to develop what he calls "an intimate relationship with YOUR voice". This knowledge literally takes away the mystery and "magic" of singing. He systematically guides you through a very CLEAR PROCESS that unlocks YOUR voice. And he empowers you to become YOUR OWN TEACHER. Stephen has taught me that MY VOICE IS A MUSCLE, JUST LIKE ANY MUSCLE IN MY BODY. That it can be trained, refined and conditioned, just like any muscle in my body. He got me to believe this through my OWN EXPERIENCE that when I put the work in I WILL GET RESULTS. Just like when I work on my physical coordination and strengthening in Ballet class, my jumps and turns improve; getting higher, more precise, faster, lighter, whatever the case may be, when I work with Stephen on my voice, my range grows, the quality of my vocal timbre gets richer and fuller, there's more ring and resonance; EVERYTHING IMPROVES. Stephen's clear technique has given me great confidence in my ability to sing and to continue to improve as a singer. I highly recommend him to anyone, from absolute beginner to pro. I am truly positive you will be happy with the results. And enjoy the process.

About Stephen's Character:
Stephen is a consummate professional. Extremely reliable, respectful and kind. If I had children of my own, I would feel 100% comfortable sending them to him. I have recommended Stephen to several of my own acting students, as well as fellow dancers and strangers on the occasion that the topic arises. Because I believe in his method and I respect and appreciate the way in which he offers his knowledge and embodies his words.

Stephen is Passionate, Inspired and Inspiring when he's sharing his work with his students. You can tell from his conviction, brilliant insights and compassion that he created his method from his own triumphs and failures, breakthroughs and frustrations as a singer and singing student. It seems he's spent his whole life learning what he's now refined into a very clear method that he can impart to ANY eager student in a very short amount of time. I feel very fortunate and thankful to have found such a gifted teacher.
