A Free Bird is a non-profit organization with a mission to bring arts to children who have been diagnosed or are recovering from cancer. I meet with my student once a week for our guitar lesson.

My teaching strategy is to introduce my students to the basic, building blocks of guitar playing so that they can form into whatever kind of guitarist they wish to become. It's sort of like creative writing—once you learn the basics of grammar, you can then break the rules and change the way you write. This is how I learned when I was 14, and subsequently, have been able to delve into many different ways to play guitar from forming punk rock power chords to gypsy jazz strumming patterns. The guitar is a language of its own, and I hope to aid in your fluency.

I have been studying music for almost all my life. It started when I was 6 years old when I sang for my family during the holidays. I never stopped singing since then and decided I wanted to play guitar to accompany myself when I was 14 years old. Music is a huge part of what makes me, me. It has lifted me up when I was down and has allowed me to be apart of something bigger than myself.  

I have performed solo acts with just me and my guitar, and with bigger bands at Bowery Electric and Berlin in New York City. I am currently writing an album to be released hopefully by Summer 2020. 

I am a junior at Baruch College studying Psychology with plans to become a music therapist after I graduate.

I can provide a guitar for lessons if needed!

Sophia is thorough, knowledgeable, and patient. I am a beginner, and got a great sense of the basics in my first lesson. I’m already excited for my next one!
