Teaching since:
January 1980

From age 5 until today, music has been a lifelong pursuit. I've had ten years of classical piano lessons, sitar lessons in India, jazz studies at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, and private bass lessons with Pete Cosey. I co-founded the bands Sojourner and Samana, with appearances at the Chicago Jazz Festival, the Woman's Jazz Festival, and the National Woman’s Music Festival. I've released several recordings and have played bass on many others. And, last summer, I had a great time teaching in the Music Camp at the Old Town School of Folk Music.
I believe that, in music, there's always more to learn and more to share. Let's work together to see what music can do for you and what you can do with music!

Fantastic instructor

Although it has only been a few weeks, Shanta has exceeded my expectations. I have learned so much in such little time. Thanks to her I am not only learning to play the piano but I am understanding the instrument and the many ways to get a sound out of it. I could not be more happy with her as my instructor.

Just the begining

So far I have enjoyed my experience with Ms. Shanta. My daughter really enjoys the lessons and I look forward to a long relationship with her.

I feel we were very blessed to find Ms. Shanta! As a mother of a 4 year old I was hoping for certain qualities in addition to the obvious i.e strong musical backround, formal education, experience, etc. Well let me tell you parents.. Ms Shanta is very child friendly. She interacts with them on their level while at the same time making them feel, well, BIG!! She incorporates the fundamentals along with music appreciation !! My daughter truly enjoys the classes and brings this enthusiasm home during practice time !!

Thank You! Na'eema is playing better and seems to like you. You'll seem to have a good relationship (teacher/student) which is very important. She really respects you and is practicing more. Again thank you.
