    Scott S. is a composer, educator, and new music advocate. His compositional approach aims at being constructive and sincere. A native of Pittsburgh, PA, he now happily lives, studies, and teaches in Kansas City, MO. Scott has taught composition, music theory, ear training, and counterpoint in various settings, from private lessons to masterclasses to classes at the UMKC Academy of Music and Dance. Having studied at Duquesne University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, his composition teachers include Chen Yi, Jim Mobberley, Zhou Long (Pulizer Prize), Paul Rudy, and David Stock.

    Taught weekly classroom courses on music theory fundamentals, advanced music theory, and ear training. All courses included, lecture, class discussion, homework, and prepared lesson plans according to curriculum. Met with students one on one with students for sight singing before or after class while teaching ear training. Taught weekly private lessons in composition and in first species counterpoint. Students ranged from middle school students in the KC Youth Symphony to retirees seeking to enrich their lives through music.

    A community outreach program at UMKC, Composers in the Schools brings graduate composers into Kansas City middle and high schools to teach a weekly class. Classes range from music theory to music appreciation. Music is used to help students develop greater personal expression and deepened critical thinking. Many classes include composition lessons. The curriculum is dependent on the needs of each school.
