Violin lessons for all ages and abilities from a teacher with 14+ years experience!

I've been teaching violin for 14 years, and I strongly believe that playing the violin should be a rewarding experience for the student. No two students are exactly alike, so I avoid the cookie-cutter approach to teaching—instead, I structure lessons based on each student's unique strengths and challenges, as well as what interests them. While technique is a crucial component to playing the violin, I also take joy in helping my students find their own musical voice. I have seen many of my students rise from complete beginners to advanced, talented players. Even the adult beginners I have taught have made tremendous progress both in technique and in musical expression—it is never too late to learn how to play the violin! I am experienced in teaching classical and fiddle music, but I am also always open to helping you learn any kind of music you want to play (Coldplay, Etta James, Disney music, Broadway musicals, etc!). If there's something you'd love to learn, I'll help you do it!

Hi, my name is Sarah! I have 14 years of experience teaching students of all ages and abilities in both school environments (from elementary to college level) and in my private studio. As an educator, I avoid the cookie-cutter approach to teaching and instead structure lessons based on each student's unique strengths and challenges—and importantly, take into account what they are hoping to get out of the lessons. I have taught music from Mozart to Mark O'Connor to Coldplay, and everything in between. If there is something you'd love to learn to play, I'll help you do it! A LITTLE MORE ABOUT ME: I am a teacher and composer-performer who was the violinist in the 2019 Tony Award-winning and Grammy-nominated Broadway production of Oklahoma! at Circle In The Square Theater. I received my Bachelor's Degree from Vassar College and my Master's in Music from NYU-Steinhardt. As a violinist, I have appeared as a soloist for The NYU International Conference of the Arts in Berlin, the AMEE Festival in Madrid and Valencia, the TEDxMET series at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and have additionally been a featured composer-performer for the WildShore Festival in Alaska, The Present Music Festival in Milwaukee, The Johnstone Fund for New Music in Columbus, OH, The Laudie D. Porter Artist Series at Carleton College in Northfield, MN, The Center for New Music in San Francisco, The MATA-Ecstatic Music Festival at Merkin Hall, and many more. I have also performed at The Barclay’s Center, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Alice Tully Hall, The Bang on a Can Marathon, The Park Avenue Armory, and with Courtney Love, Ronnie Spektor, Lizzo, and Kimbra, to name a few. I've also had a few television performances, including the 2019 Tony Awards, the Tonight Show, the Today Show, and Kelly and Ryan. In addition to performing, I also co-run three music ensembles, including a septet, a violin-soprano duo, and an experimental pop band, and am a composer of chamber music. I look forward to meeting you!

My lessons with Sarah are an uplifting and transformative experience. She has a clear and straightforward teaching style that helps me to learn quickly. She an excellent and high level teacher for technique, and at the same time makes learning and playing violin fun and easy. I feel great after our meetings and very inspired to do my best with music and my life. Sarah has lots of knowledge and experience in many areas of music, not only classical, but new music, folk, and other genres. I like that i can study with someone who can give me a great classical foundation for my technique but who is also a light hearted and open minded person. I highly recommend her!

Sarah is a wonderful and versatile musician and teacher. She’s frequently heard on Broadway and her fiddling can’t be beat. She’s professional, reliable, organized, and upbeat. I’d highly recommend working with Sarah!!!
