Throughout my musical training, I have worked with distinguished performers and educators in the classical music community. I have studied with Lawrence Dutton (of the Emerson String Quartet), and Nicholas Cords (of Brooklyn Rider), Karen Ritscher (of Manhattan School of Music), and Nancy Buck (of Arizona State University). My teachers have been taught by some of the most eminent string pedagogues of their generation, including Dorothy Delay, Karen Tuttle, Lilian Fuchs, Harvey Shapiro, and Heidi Castleman. This broad survey of teaching styles and philosophies gives me a great breadth of knowledge which I apply to each student.

I have been teaching for over a decade in many settings. These include: my own private studio, TakeLessons, music stores, and performing arts studios.

Before earning my masters degree in performance, I was honored to be awarded a Teaching Assistantship for the viola studio of Professor Nancy Buck at Arizona State University. During my teaching appointment, I taught undergraduate viola lessons and group classes.

I have been teaching online lessons since 2017 and am very proficient with using technology for distance learning. I also have experience teaching those of all ages and those with disabilities.

My Students Can Expect:
-to feel empowered and strengthened by their studies with me
-personalized lessons catered to their learning style and needs
-organized plans of study with progress in mind
-flexibility based on a student's goals and lifestyle
-to enjoy making music and growing

My Approach:
-equal focus on technical and artistic skills, integrated when possible
-emphasis on playing with good posture and mindfulness to prevent injury
-practice strategies—learning more than just the notes
-preparation for performances and auditions
-varied skill-building: sight-reading, music theory and history as needed, aural training, and more
-discussion of higher-level concepts to clarify musical ideas

I enjoy using the following materials, based on experience level:
-Suzuki Repertoire
-the Essential Elements series
-Etude books: Wohlfahrt, Mazas, Kreutzer, Sevcik, Schradieck
-Scale books: Mogill, Galamian, Flesch
-Various repertoire
-creating transcriptions of modern materials upon request (modern songs)

Most importantly, I want my students to feel capable, inspired, and successful in their musical studies.

About Sarah E.

Sarah went from a baby banging pots to a professional musician performing in Carnegie Hall and with Grammy Award winners. She began her classical training early and is fluent in piano and string instruments. Sarah first knew she loved teaching as the first volunteer keyboard instructor at the Nevada Blind Children’s Foundation. She has maintained a studio of students of various instruments, ages, experience levels, and abilities for over a decade.

Sarah studied with viola professors Nicholas Cords of Brooklyn Rider and Larry Dutton of the Emerson String Quartet (nine-time Grammy Award winners) at Stony Brook University. There she earned her BA in viola performance and also studied musicology at the graduate level. In her undergraduate career, she had the honor to perform in the graduate orchestra—the Stony Brook Symphony—and to be coached by the Emerson Quartet and other esteemed graduate faculty. She received the prestigious Undergraduate Quartet and Michael Bane awards and was a member of the Stony Brook Chamber Ensemble. She performed at the Emerson Spring Chamber Music Festival four years in a row and performed with Emerson String Quartet violinist Phil Setzer in December 2014 alongside other distinguished Stony Brook musicians. From fall 2014 to spring 2015, she studied in Karen Ritscher's viola studio.

Most recently, she is earnedher masters degree at ASU's Herberger Institute for the Arts. She studied under Professor Nancy Buck and served as her studio teaching assistant. During that time, she taught undergraduate lessons and group classes. She has been awarded special talent awards as well as the prestigious Richard Burns viola scholarship.

Sarah has also participated in well-established music festivals such as Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute (2009) and Round Top International Music Festival (2012-2014). She received scholarships to attend BUTI's String Quartet Workshop and Young Artists Orchestra. At Round Top International music festival, she received full fellowships, was selected to perform chamber music with the world-renowned faculty (Hakan Rosengren and Eteri Andjaparidze), and won a command performance in the “Best of 2014 Chamber Music" playing Takemitsu’s And Then I Knew ’Twas Wind.

Most recent summers have been spent in Europe. In 2015, Sarah visited Prague as a participant of the Ameropa Music Festival; among many chamber performances she played alongside David Erhlich. In 2016, Sarah was invited to be a guest artist at the Saarburg Music Festival in the beautiful wine country of Rhineland Germany. There, she was honored to collaborate with faculty William Terwilliger, Katherine McLin, Susan Lamb Cook, and Andrew Cooperstock.

Sarah is most passionate about sharing music with others. From being a high school volunteer teaching students at the Nevada Blind Children’s Foundation to being a graduate teaching assistant instructing undergraduates at ASU—Sarah has a vast range of teaching experiences. She welcomes the opportunity to encourage her students to love music as much as she does.

Sarah is a lovely young lady who is passionate, kind, and patient. Her upbeat energy and positive reinforcement really helps my little one feel confident in her skills as a violinist. As an instructor she seems very passionate about what she is teaching going that extra mile to ensure that you get what you need and more!

My daughter loves Sarah, she is very sweet, helpful and comprehensive. She sets standards, challenges and goals for my daughter to reach that allows her to feel like an accomplished violinist, although she's just a beginner.
