Foster a love for the violin and music with an inspired award-winning violinist!
I fell in love with the violin at age 5, and after 17 years of focused study, I want to share the gift of music and violin-playing to you! After graduating from the Vanderbilt’s Blair School of Music, and after studying with multiple world renown violinists and professors, I’ve learned to teach in a multitude of ways, and I will tailor lessons to you! If you’re a beginner, I’ll help establish a foundation in ear training, rhythm, and positioning. If you’re advanced, I’ll help develop the inner artist, guiding you to find new colors, master new techniques, and achieve your ideas of beautiful music!
About Sam Z.

I’m a professional violinist based in the DC area. In my playing experience, I’ve won multiple awards as a soloist and chamber musician, and I’ve earned concertmaster/principal positions in multiple orchestras. In my 5 years of teaching, my students have earned concertmaster positions. I’ve worked with a numerous number of world renown musicians, including the Juilliard Quartet, Concord Trio, Phillipe Quint, Zuill Bailey, Ara Gregorian, Hye-Jin Kim, and numerous principle members of the North Carolina Symphony. I’m a product of the teachers and professors I’ve worked with, each of them are vastly different. I’ve learned unique perspectives and teaching styles from each of them, so I am equipped to teach you wherever you are in your musical journey! Some pieces I’ve worked on recently include the Beethoven Violin Concerto, Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, Brahms sextet in B-flat, Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, Bach partita no. 2 and sonata no. 2 & 3. Ysaye Sonata no. 4. You can find my senior recital on YouTube!

Teacher's Studio

Sam is the kindest, most giving teacher out there! He puts his full time and energy into everything he does, especially when it comes to music. He has been both a colleague and a mentor to me over the last several years, and I have learned so much from his approach to music-making. He has an amazing handle on both the technical and emotional aspects of violin playing, and is always willing to share his thoughts in an encouraging, productive way. You could not ask for a more wonderful teacher!

Sam Zhu is one of the greatest rising young educators in the music field I have ever encountered. He can articulate the most mature and sophisticated musical ideas in logical and digestible ways. He is also well versed in the basic fundamentals of playing the violin and adept at teaching beginner concepts and theories, rendering his teaching prowess in most if not all skill levels. He's very patient, very kind, and has a confident assertiveness that isn't too overpowering but required in order to establish a productive learning environment. Also his friends are like super awesome, and he's a goated cook. My sole grievance with his teaching methods would be his unwillingness to commute 2.5 hours after I relocated, thereby complicating any form of education or interaction. Overall...4/5 eggcellent teacher, would recommend for any1, really gr8t with kids, love him. <4 <4
