My latest creative project. I'm taking operatic voice lessons and writing new songs and am planning to take this band on the road next summer.
Twisted Pine is a bluegrass band I founded and played the New England Festival Circuit for three years. What a blast!
For two years I got to play in a touring act that had a big following in the Jam Band scene. These guys really showed me how to be in a touring act.
Ricky Mier is one of the most exciting young banjo players I’ve heard. With a fertile imagination and the technique to support it, Ricky is on the cutting edge of the latest crop of banjo adventurers. I look forward to seeing where he takes the banjo next.+ Read More
Ricky is a breath of fresh air, a young professional musician grounded in roots of Celtic and bluegrass, but drawing on the wide spectrum that music has to offer - be it a bit of funk, or influences from around the world. His exceptional musicianship shines through and his teaching style is equally appropriate for concert preparation, fundamentals, or fun - he's energetic, dynamic, fun, and incorporates much seemingly effortless but very tight improvisation. Give him a try - you will not be disappointed.+ Read More
I’m not your average banjo student. I’d been self taught since high school and when I retired I decided I wanted to learn to play properly so I looked for a teacher. I found Ricky Mier online and with some trepidation I started my lessons. My trepidation stemmed from the fact that I was a hacker and Ricky is an experienced professional and an exceptional player. I thought I wasn’t the kind of student he was looking for. My anxiety was groundless because Ricky is much more than a great player, he is a committed holistic teacher. Our sessions are fun, challenging, and are focused on not only musical exercises but also tendon training, relaxation, and learning to listen. I’ve been with him weekly for almost 9 months now and while no one will mistake me for Bela, my playing has greatly improved. Whether your interest is Bluegrass, Celtic, or Melodic, Ricky can guide you on your journey in a fun, effective way. I really like our sessions. You will too.+ Read More
I had a great first lesson with Ricky, he is very talented, easy going and a fun person to work with. I'm looking forward to the next lesson. In the meantime, I've got plenty of practice work on my hand that I am looking forward to digging into. Ricky has exceeded my expectations for a first lesson!+ Read More
Really chill guy. He accommodated to my abilities and made the lessons fun. He also pushed me to practice a lot, which wasn't hard to do because it's fun! We ended up starting almost every lesson with talking about a new passion like a certain kind of musical sound we don't hear every day or a fun motivational speaker or a new band, etc. Be prepared to be called "dude" and "man," along with a general relaxed and fun hour.+ Read More
Ricky has been a wonderful teacher! I learned so much from him in our time together but I had to move so I was not able to continue. Ricky is such a patient and creative teacher which really helps with each lesson. If I could sneak in a 6th star on this review I would! Thank you so much Ricky!+ Read More
A really good lesson, got me excited to learn more and to practice. Anxious to take the next lesson!
First off let me start by saying when I first spoke with Rick I explained that I had recently been diagnosed with a medical condition and requested he be patient with me through the learning process. He has been more than accommodating and he has made each lesson a fun learning experience . I told Rick that my goal was to be able to go to Jam sessions and fit in and be able to play along ,since i started he has been preparing me with a solid repertoire and skill set to be able to accomplish this task. I have been to a few teachers over the years and Rick is the first one that truly gets “it” . I would give Rick a solid “A” if I were to give him a grade if anybody is looking for a great Banjo teacher .+ Read More
