Mandolin is mostly known for bluegrass, but in the last few years it's become quite prominent in country, as well as other genres. It's a very fun instrument, once one gets used to the size.
Mandolin lessons mostly entail building a chord
vocabulary, and maybe learning a basic scale or two. After that students are ready to learn tons of songs.

Born in Arlington, Texas, I began playing guitar and bass guitar in high school. After studying for several years under Joey Faust, I studied Jazz, Classical Guitar, and Music Theory at TCC in Fort Worth. I began teaching in my free time to friends and family in 2003; by 2008 I was teaching full time, my students ranging in age from 3 to over 70. I also play piano, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, and auto harp.
*** Lesson Details ***
I believe lessons should be fun, so all lessons are tailored to the individual student, based on the student's interests and goals. Students are free to progress at their own pace, and to choose their own learning material. Styles and techniques include Rock, Country, Blues, Bluegrass, Jazz, Shred, Slide Guitar, Classical Guitar, and Slap Bass, to name a few.
*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in my home studio are definitely more beneficial to the student, because I have all my toys here! Besides having all of my other instruments here for demonstrations, or being able to freely change between electric or acoustic guitar for example.
I also find that students who are at home (especially the children) tend to be more distracted, whether it's from lack of privacy due to the area chosen for the lessons, or often (again, this goes especially for the kids) there are pets that they like to play with while I'm trying to talk to them.
When they're guests in my home, however, I find I have their strict attention.
*** Specialties ***
I am primarily a guitar player specializing in electric lead guitar and solo acoustic guitar/vocal performance. I also teach beginner to advanced bass guitar, primarily finger-style.
In addition to private lessons, I also teach weekly guitar and piano classes at Hugh Smith Recreation Center in Arlington, Texas.
Ray was encouraging, knowledgeable, and prepared
Easy to talk with, seems knowledgeable, patience. Pleased with my first lesson.
Ray is very patient, knowledgeable and makes the lessons fun. Ray is complimentary on my progress and that is exactly what beginners need.
Ray is super patient and has a great ability to break things down simply ;)
Ray is patient, knowledgeable and very talented. I am having fun learning to play the banjo.
Ray was great. His knowledge covers a broad spectrum of guitar styles.
And his teaching style put me at ease from the the very beginning
Looking forward to our next scheduled lesson next Tuesday
Ray is patient and encouraging. He challenges students to get better every week.
Great first lesson!
I thought it was great, Ray was very patient, looking forward to my next class.
I am so glad I chose Ray. He is a natural teacher. He has a great personality and immediately I felt very relaxed with him. He has a great way of breaking down ideas and is very patient. I look forward to years of training under Ray.
Mr. Ray is not only the greatest Guitar instructor ever, he is a great man. He does not just teach the instruments he also is a great mentor. Mr. Ray taught my two boys from 2 grade to 8grade. He taught them life lessons that they use today. He challenges his student to be the best they can be in school and out. I am proud to call him my friend and brother.+ Read More
Excellent teacher. He takes his time to explain the detail of music theory to you.
I must qualify the Best Ever rating, I don't know any other Banjo Instructors. I have paid for a number of piano lessons for my kids over the years. He is definitely in the category of Best Instructors. For me I do not know any other instruments. I appreciate the encouragement and confidence he provides me. Lessons are relaxed, and he is patient when answering questions and explaining and demonstrating various techniques.+ Read More
Ray was professional and patient considering my 3 year old granddaughter in attendance! He definitely knows his instrument and has that passion to play as well as teach! Some choice of words can fly over my 8 year old grandson's head (more every day word use for 8 year olds would be recommended). Otherwis we're looking foward to the next lesson...He's the man so far!+ Read More
He was fantastic. Hew knew where to start so I could better at piano. I'm really looking forward to all the other lessons.
great teacher.. demonstration then practice....
Great lessons progressing skills on a difficult instrument.
He's personable. Good ideas, good instructor. Follows through and is very encouraging. Recommend!
What a great experience! I like Ray's approach and his willingness to share no nonsense remarks about his expectations. Yes, practice is key to becoming a good banjo player. Imagine that!
I appreciate the fact that Ray was so open in sharing the fact that many of his students underestimate the importance of regular practice. I whole-heartedly agree. Since we share the same philosophy and approach, this is the start of a great relationship. (Can't give it 5 stars though, solely because of the traffic. The lessons are worth the trip!)
Ray is an awesome teacher. He has great communication skills and was brilliant talking with my teen daughter, assessing her skill level and instructing accordingly. Great job!!
My Banjo Lessons
Ray has already helped this 47 Year old kid to make large leaps in my understanding of music theory and my instrument. I really appreciate Rays knowledge of music and his ability to break it down so that anyone can understand and put into practice the knowledge gained very quickly. My hour lessons go so fast that I wonder where the time went.
Ray has been very flexible to this student and has been very accommodating to all the questions I have. He is patient and will go over anything again until you understand the lesson.
I Highly recommend Ray to any level of student all ages just starting out or someone who wants to gain more knowledge with the instrument you have.
I appreciate what he has taught me so far and am very excited to see where this journey takes me.
Ray is awesome!
I am not your typical mandolin student. I am a 54 year old grama who decided to learn to play the mandolin for something fun to do. I'm so glad i picked Ray as a teacher! I chose him initially based on high reviews from parents of young children, so I figured I would probably not be too much of a challenge for him. I looked forward to my lessons every week. Ray is positive, upbeat, encouraging and very patient. Even though I only go for half an hour each week, I have been able to learn one song every week. I am now working on my third song. I highly recommend Ray to any age group.
We love our teacher! My kids can't wait for their lessons. They want to practice and the best part is that Ray teaches them in a way where they can play together. They're learning so much but they're having a great time doing it.
Caring, patient and very knowledgeable
Ray's love of music and guitar are very contagious. Enjoyed all sessions with Ray, because he's such a caring & patient instructor.
Ray is an excellent teacher. He stresses the fundamentals ... while still making it fun to learn. I am enjoying the banjo much more already.
Practicing rolls is very boring but is proving to be very beneficial. I can see substantial improvement in my timing and pleasure of playing in a very short period of time
very good teacher! explains everything clearly and in detail! very patient with me as well!
