Some press:

Phil's compositions showcase a variety of ideas and are quite effective at setting up the soloists to explore the various permutations suggested by his tunes. His compositional originality is matched by his incisive playing which ranges from "inside" lyricism to hard edged, riff based, screaming rock and satisfying surreal textures aided by his intelligent use of electronics."
- David Kane, Cadence Music

"With demonstrative technique, Phil is cognizant of the tradition but thinks outside of the box."
-Mark F. Turner, All About Jazz

My son likes the instructor a lot. He has been learning from him for close to a year now.

Although I'm not technically a student of Phil's, I learn a lot from him every time I play and teach with him. We perform regularly at Berklee, where I'm a professor, and we give concerts and masterclasses all over the Northeast together (most recent was at Cornell). Phil's a warmhearted, patient, brilliant teacher and an outstanding and creative musician, seamlessly putting together everything he knows--jazz, shredding, classical--there's no boundaries for him! He's great at explaining things, and he never belittles a question, no matter how dumb you might have thought it was. Phil's a great friend and a great teacher. -John Funkhouser, Berklee College of Music, Boston

In addition to being the most talented guitarist and musician I have ever had the opportunity to play with, Phil is an astoundingly good teacher. I've played guitar for 8 years and taken private lessons the entire time. Phil has been my teacher for the past 2 years and in that time I have progressed as a musician more than I could have ever imagined. Phil has been the biggest factor in my decision to major in music, due to his unrivaled musical talent, his kind, unassuming, (and funny) demeanor and his seemingly limitless knowledge of the fretboard. He is well versed in so many genres of music, and has such an effortless grasp on improvisation. Any guitarist, from immediate beginners to seasoned professionals, can learn so much from Phil. Need I say more?

Phil is the man! I had been playing for several years before I took lessons with him. He has introduced me to volumes of new music, helped me grow as an improviser, and even taught me how to read for the guitar (which was never my goal in taking lessons, but I'm very happy I can read now). He's helped to expand my playing by constantly introducing new and creative ideas in a supportive atmosphere.

Phil demonstrates a mastery of his instrument while always making his lessons accessible to the student. Definitely check this guy out if you want to reach the next level!

My son started working with Phil after a year of "traditional" guitar lessons with someone else. My son was bored and considering quitting. I'm thankful we found Phil. Things clicked with Phil more out dated songs from a book, Phil taught him to play the songs he liked from his favorite bands. As my son transitioned from Middle School to High School and his schedule became tight he was not willing to give up his guitar lessons with Phil. That is when we transitioned to lessons online. My son looks forward to his lessons and we never have to miss a lesson because we can't make the drive in/out of Concord. Working on Skype has been easy, productive and my son is progressing and he's having fun. Phil is a gifted guitar player and a gifted teacher.

Phil has been teaching guitar to my son for over three years. As a beginner Phil sparked my sons interest in a variety of music and has inspired him to challenge himself and evolve as a musician. Phil's talent reaches beyond being a great musician, his passion of teaching is evident. He takes interest in my son as a musician and as a person. Their connection has been invaluable to my sons growth and confidence in both music and life.

Phil is the best! He's an inspiring musician and composer, and has a deep love of music and seemingly limitless patience. Having had music teachers with neither patience nor an evident love of music, I can say with authority that Phil is a rare breed. He has great talent but never shows off, and he is wonderfully encouraging even to the most slowly progressing of students (that would be me). Any age, level of experience, or style of music (seriously--ANY style) --Phil's your guy!

Phil is the best instructor you could ask for! When I first started taking lessons with Phil, I had very little experience on guitar, most of which was self taught. Phil took my playing and knowledge of the guitar to the next level and beyond. Phil's teaching style makes guitar comprehensive as well as fun. Whether your a beginner or an expert, Phil's lessons will improve your playing.
