Do you want to learn to play like the greats? (Pete Johnson, Albert Ammons, and Meade Lux Lewis) In these lessons you will learn the key skills of blues piano improvisation, including licks and riffs, comping, chords and scales, ear training, and song design. Each lesson will be tailored to your individual skills, wants, and needs. No prior piano experience is needed; you can learn to play your first notes during your first lesson! However, many experienced piano students have enjoyed taking blues piano improvisation as a way to supplement their repertoire. I've had a great experience improvising with blues piano for around 20 years, and I'm so excited to pass my expertise on to you.

My name is Paul McFarland and I am a certified music teacher specializing in blues piano. Hearing Pete Johnson for the first time changed my life. Building on a strong foundation of classical piano, I immediately began learning to play blues piano. Since learning to improvise, there's been no going back for me. I have a passion for teaching piano in a safe, engaging atmosphere. I model skills throughout my lessons and spend the bulk of the lesson giving students a guided improvisation experience. I have a bachelor's degree in Music Education from SUNY Fredonia, and a masters degree of Kodály in Music Education from Loyola University Maryland. I've been teaching music at a K-8 school for over a decade now!

My daughter is taking lessons with Mr. Paul, and I have been so impressed that I decided to sign up for lessons too! He is an extremely talented teacher who knows how to break down advanced skills into easy parts. He teaches great blues sounds and how to improvise with them yourself. I couldn't believe how real my playing sounded right away! He's such a talented musician that it's inspiring when he plays a bit to show where you can take it. If more students had him as their teacher, piano lessons would have a new reputation of being fun and inspiring.

Mr. Paul is the best! His genius way of teaching works so quickly that I was improvising real blues from the very first lesson! He is so encouraging and supportive that I'm excited for each lesson! He makes it so easy to follow along online and the lessons so much fun!
