(Beginner - Intermediate) Compassionate Cello Instruction with an experienced Berklee Alum

I have had many good teachers in my career as a musician. But I have been lucky to have had a few GREAT teachers. It is easy to settle with "just ok", particularly when taking lessons as a novice. However, the difference between a "good" teacher and a "great" teacher at any point in your journey as a student can hugely impact your success and relationship with the instrument. As a teacher, I aim to be great for my students. For beginners, we focus on developing a solid base - getting comfortable with the instrument, understanding it, building fundamental skills such as how to hold the bow and basic fret board patterns. From there, we begin learning to read music, which I still find to be the most valuable skill a musician can have. Learning to read music notation is easiest at a young age, so I like to begin as soon as the student is ready. However, as a student of improvisational music, I like to introduce ear-training and improvisation as well. It is a fun way to teach students how to express themselves on the instrument and helps grow a healthy relationship with their inner musicality. The goal is not to overwhelm you with rigid "wrongs" and "rights," but rather discover them together so that fundamental techniques are felt and not just memorized. I never want my students to be discouraged due to a rigid, "school-like" curriculum. Playing the cello is so amazing and my life's goal is to help others discover this first-hand.

My name is Owen and I am a professional musician and songwriter living in Brooklyn. I recently graduated Magna cum laude from Berklee College of Music, where I studied for four years and received both academic and performance scholarships. At Berklee, I had the opportunity to study under known musicians such as Owen Young of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Julius Williams, who led the BCSO during my years in it and eventually became my conducting teacher / mentor. I was able to play at Boston's historic Symphony Hall with the Distant Worlds Orchestra led by Arnie Roth. I regularly performed at the Berklee Performance Center alongside world-class musicians and had the opportunity to partake in masterclasses led by musicians such as Victor Wooten, "Ready" Freddie Washington, and Kenny Werner. Outside of classical and contemporary cello, I play bass guitar in the band Superblush and often collaborate with NYC / Boston-based artists. I've been lucky to have had 100s of hours in studio settings, both as a session musician as well as a producer / engineer. At home, I record a lot on my own, namely for fun and to continue learning about audio production and processing. Although I love creating recorded music, I still find live performance the most fulfilling. More recently, I have begun working as a professional songwriter for YourSongmaker, which has allowed me to exercise my songwriting muscles and continue collaborating creatively, which is something that drives me as a person and a musician. As an individual, I try to be as open-minded and compassionate as I can. Being a good listener is important not only in music, but in life as well, so I work hard to listen to everyone.
